Up to 100 yards true. However, open it up to 150 or 200 yards and HMR is a clear winner. That said, it's horses for courses and clearly for Canada, the extra bullet weight has some clout from your experience. Now if you really want a Rimfire performer and aren't worried about the carcass or are prepared to headshoot, then WSM looks like the way to go. Unfortunately in the UK you can't buy it yet.

I know someone with a military type weapon but not an AR15 but a Marine Scout Clone. He's a target shooter and swears by the accuracy. I guess some are good and some not so good. I know his has a very heavy barrel. Have to question the need though. Apart from appearance, there's no difference to any other semi-auto. That said, if you really want one, why not.

Condition 4 Fox Can I Shoot Deer
Alsone replied to Cushty mush's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
Unfortunately I don't think they're daft enough to grant you All Legal Quarry on a deer legal calibre without specifically excluding deer 1st. My advice if you really don't want to do DSC1, is join a shooting organisation such as the BASC and if necessary be prepared to go to Court over it. As others have said, there is no legal requirement to my knowledge to take DSC1 before shooting deer. However, standing your ground might mean you have a fight on your hands. I think your only course of action is get membership of a body that has insurance and will fight your corner (I recommend -
It would probably help people steer you in the right direction if you give some further information: 1. What do you intend to shoot? 2. Are you going to eat it? 3. If yes to 2, then are you happy to head shoot or do you want to retain the ability to body shoot without damaging the meat? 4. Do you intend to shoot at night? 5. Are there houses nearby? 6. What ranges do you want / need to be able to shoot at?

Not quite correct but the .22 cartridges below it are mostly obscure ie percussion caps, shorts etc, although subs are commonly used and whilst .22LR in name, do sit below regular (supersonic) .22LR in performance. It is correct to say .22LR and .22 WMR are the two commonly used .22 rimfire rounds, and that .22 WMR and .22 Magnum (abbreviated) are the same round.

It's illegal to shoot deer at night anyway. From memory I'm pretty sure its one hour after sunrise to one hour before sunset unless you have a special license from Natural England. Maybe he just doesn't want you spooking them.

Must admit, I've done some more searching and turned up these (albeit at $1K). They sound seriously quiet on .308. I know video masks large bangs with suppression, but I can't even discern a loud echo:

I think military ones offer much better performance but you try and find one. Googling military spec moderator, suppressor, silencer etc, all I could come up with is a guy on youtube who claims to make his own mil spec ones. I'm sure it should be possible to get the muzzle blast down much lower than on current hunting spec mods. However, there seems to be a lack of info (maybe the UK government doesn't want them too quite?) and there's nothing you can do about the bullet crack of course unless you go subs.

Would this be the place? http://www.lawrenceprecision.co.uk/ Got a good write up on Stalking Directory but is expensive although has a lifetime guarantee. EDIT: Cross posted with Tornado.

If anyone's feeling rich, and assuming importation is legal on moderators (I don't know if it is or if not, if it's possible to get a licence or a dealer to do it), these guys claim a 38db reduction (165db > 127db) on their .223 moderator: http://www.dakotasilencer.com/the-varminter-silencer-2-0-mack-brothers/ Most UK moderators claim a 25db reduction. Considering every 1db = 10x reduction, that's a big difference. 127db is still far from silent but a huge reduction from 165db. I'm guessing the price is in part down to titanium.

Not nice. I once came across a rabbit with Mixy though and that was far worse. Worst thing I've ever seen tbh. What did you shoot this with a rimmy?
-
Another choice might be .30-06 if they allow it (no reason not to as .308 is a necked down .30-06, but I'd check). .30-06 is an excellent deer round. More recoil but slightly more power than .308 so maybe slightly more suited to Africa I would have thought. Accuracy is very similar.

DSS rifles (not being clever, google doesn't like it with only 1 "s"). Link here: http://www.dssrifles.com/czrifles-for-sale/

If you'd been local to me, then I'd have considered an FAC application to do this provided I could get written permission. I'd have gone out with you of course mate 99% of the time, but would have needed independence permission to invest all the gear and show good reason. As others have said, great opportunity.

You're not going to get a big game calibre on the basis of hunting boar unless you're very lucky as you still can't show good reason for such a calibre no matter where you shoot them. 45-70 can also be authorised for deer so might be an easier call - deer and wild boar. This isn't an exclusive list and some of these are not suitable for boar, but this is the good reason for "Deer and Other Large Quarry" "including boar": Generally you're looking at energies of 3,000ft lbs or below. Although 2,700 ft lbs + is recommended for boar along with a minimum .270 calibre by the Sho

.17 WSM if it becomes available in the UK this year as it both out ranges HMR and isn't affected by wind. It's better than .22 hornet in that regard. If not, I think your only option is .22LR or .22 Mag. if you want to stick to rimfire but your range is restricted. If you're prepared to go centre fire then try .22 Hornet for "long range vermin" for good reason. I'd also play the safety card for long range shots citing windrift for HMR as the good reason table only allows Hornet for vermin under special circumstances.

It is a fighting dog. Common sense should say that if you have a potentially aggressive breed, you shouldn't leave it unsupervised with children until its temperament has been well and truly established. They blame the dog here when really it is the owner.

Nice shooting. I've always found No:1's very good. Pity you can't eat fox or it might have been like one of those 3 bird roasts - Fox on the outside and duck on the in!

A new line of .17 Winchester Super Magnum Rifles announced at the Shot Show 2014 from Volquartsen. They look really nice but they're semi-autos! ..and typical accuracy is 3/8 at 100 yds! Plus an AR15 from Franklin Armoury in .17 WSM: Plus a new destruction video against a water bottle and beer can I thought I'd stick here - definitely a lot more damage than .22 or HMR: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gZbB-QOpA9M

Please Help With Shotgun Licence

So if the cabinet is mounted in what the FEO considers an unsuitable position, you're not in breach of safe keeping requirements? You're the one talking rubbish here Deker. The police require a check of the cabinet for a reason - to make sure it complies with minimum entry standards and to make sure its mounted correctly and in a position that keeps it sufficiently out of sight of visitors. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- -

You're twisting my words. I agree that once a certificate is granted you have a right to buy a gun subject to you meeting the safekeeping requirements. However, it is usually a condition of any grant (as opposed to a condition endorsed on the certificate), that the cabinet is 1st inspected and approved before weapons are purchased. Again that's not what the FEO said to me. He was quite clear, they more lenient with SGC's than FAC's and more lenient with rimfire than centrefire (he described rimfires as popguns). Now whether or not that has any basis in law is a different matter -

Deker, I wish you wouldn't post within quotes as it really f*cks the board up. It wouldn't let me post a reply this time so I've had to separate the text out: Alsone: Not reading at all Deker, my FEO actually advised me to do this, albeit this was 15 years ago. His advice at application was if granted and when I decide to purchase a gun, fit a cabinet and then call them for an approval inspection and under no circumstances was I to buy a gun without having the cabinet approved first. Deker: That is complete BS, and I don't care who told you, once your region has issued you with a SGC -
