Nice. I love Pepper and Nutmeg. The others, I'd have to see in person before buying as some look a little extreme and you just can't tell until too late. I take it by Sporter you mean a "Classic" shape? Classic, Heritage, Prairie Hunter all like look shapes I could identify with in the non thumbhole range.

Tibersaurus Rex has some very good scope videos on Youtube. Although most are aimed at long distance use as his thing is sniping, he does analyse glass quality and turret tracking (also very important), and rates them in a rnage of models. Might be worth looking up his channel and going through his scope videos until you find the ones with the tables and quality ratings. That said, you shouldn't go far wrong with Nikon, Zeiss or at the top end S&B.

This was the best info I could find on these: Side by Side review of 40 vs 42 grain in ballistic gel Edit. Video is slightly misleading in that the Powerpoint Max mentioned at the end as better still is Super Sonic not sub. So looks like 42 Grain Max sub is the best sub.

Just out of interest, which one did you get?

Mistake On Ticket Variation
Alsone replied to Adrian Prisk's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
750 is far more sensible anyway as many buy RF cartridges in bulk in cases of 500 (or 1,000's which you can't do). Hence the 750 allowance, for 500's, 1 full + 1/2 box. -
I agree with Deker. Just say you need a rifle to control both deer and fox. If you mention you intend to shoot deer "in the future" then you don't currently have good reason and they'll tell you to get a .22X calibre for now and apply for a variation in the future for deer. That will cost you a lot for the extra rifle etc. and cost isn't good reason either for granting .243 today instead of tomorrow. Don't put deer shooting off. If you want to shoot deer, apply now and then you can always hold off shooting live prey until you feel confident, knowledgeable and well practised. You don't have

I would guess that maybe one of your referees unbeknown to you, had convictions, either numerous petty or at least one serious, but who knows. It could have be a range of different reasons eg convictions, mental illness, jobs held etc. Congratulations on getting it through in any event.

I think it's possible they maybe just made a mistake with the wording (of course they may have intended it). However, I agree with you Deker, if they've authorised .22 RF then that's technically what you can buy, mistake or not. What you can shoot depends on the land clearance. However, if it wasn't intended, you risk upsetting the FEO. So far as taking independent advice goes, I always believe in a belt and braces approach and it takes the liability away from me if any advice given turns out to be wrong, as the poster was advised to take independent advice from an expert in this f

Although I agree with Deker, technically it appears they may have granted you any .22 rimfire through loose / incorrect wording, if it wasn't intended, you risk getting the FEO off side if you act on it. I'd also take advice from a shooting organisation if following that route just to be 100% sure you're legal. Personally, if you intend to approach the FEO for clarification, I'd email your question so you have a reply in writing - not strictly necessary, but said it before, belt and braces. It never hurts to use caution. Obviously keep a print out of the reply! That said, your dept

How so? If there's a fox and deer issue (for example) then they're two good calibres to request. A good reason is a good reason whether it's the first ticket or tenth renewal. A good FEO will be able to discuss this with him and assess the suitability, experience will come into play but I wouldn't rule it out at all. Because he'd say if you want to shoot deer get a .243 and you can use it for fox too. If you want to shoot fox only, get one or the other. +1. .243 is an excellent fox round so its very hard to justify .223 and .243 without some other valid reason eg you

This looks pretty deep (unsure of the width dimensions though): http://www.sportsmanguncentre.co.uk/product/124b23a14dd442b347161855/Bob+Allen+Tactical+Rifle+Slip/

Early morning .22 sub from elevated position. Maybe a high seat or 4x4 roof? That said, I agree with Deker, watch the legal implications. ie you need to be open if using FAC. Alternative 2, would be borrow a 20 gauge hushpower. Again shoot at 1st light. (They make 12's but they're supposed to be a lot more noisy. I'm going to hazard a guess with a 20 that you'll need quite large shot). Found a video here. Great thing is with dialogue and the vehicle engine idling, there's some noise to compare it to although I can't comment if the video mic does any clipping to make it sound qu

Mistake On Ticket Variation

Just wondering, what is the usual restriction on moderators in terms of wording as ".xx RF moderator" seems restrictive. I know a lot of people use CF Moderators on RF. So I'm presuming that some people at least get plain "moderator" or ".xx Moderator" on their certificates as opposed to "RF moderator". Be interested to hear people's experiences / views. -
Foxes Aren't Seen In The Day
Alsone replied to whippeter69's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
I've come face to face with one in the day. Not out shooting but behind some buildings, turned a corner and there he was on the border which was head high next to me about 3 ft from my face. He froze, I froze (bearing in mind he was at face height!). Anyway after about 1 min of staring at each other, I carefully and slowly walked off past him. He never really batted an eyelid, just watched me past. other interesting encounter I've had (slightly off topic). Was out shooting one night and my friend and I spotted a badger. Anyway we must have been up wind because upon standing sti -
Any Thoughts On The .204 Ruger Calibre?
Alsone replied to shropshire dan's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
Deker I'm not going to continue arguing with you because from previous posts people are getting fed up with it. It was never my intention to enter into such a lengthy discussion. Suffice to say, regarding the article you quoted, IF the OP in the other thread on the cross related subject, consulted the BASC as he claims to have done (and I have no reason to believe he didn't), and if the BASC advised him not to use the HMR against fox without a specific condition as he mentioned, then it may simply mean their position has changed since the date when the article was written. Anyway, -
They are contacting owners. A friend of mine had his .243 recalled last week. So unless you bought 2nd hand privately, you should get a recall. In the meantime he reports the range he shoots at has now banned all Remington 700's until modified on safety grounds.

Any Thoughts On The .204 Ruger Calibre?
Alsone replied to shropshire dan's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
Wasn't that my very point? There's no discernible difference between the damage to a fox from .223 or .243 as confirmed by Xray, so there's little value in shooting .243 for fox at reasonable ranges when it costs £5 per box extra. -
Any Thoughts On The .204 Ruger Calibre?
Alsone replied to shropshire dan's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
Deker, the reality is, in case you haven't read many of the threads on the subject on this very forum, started by the very people who've been told that they can't have a centre fire on 1st grant, that many forces won't grant centre fire at 1st instance. I haven't started / written those threads, they have. Many forces seem to do this. If you want to believe in the insular world of your county that, your force represents the way licensing is throughout the country, then believe it. You seem to believe that because you have a good FEO / force / relationship its the same universally. It's -
Any Thoughts On The .204 Ruger Calibre?
Alsone replied to shropshire dan's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
I'd have thought that's quick from what I've heard as I'd heard 3-4K seems more typical, but that maybe because with target shooting you're getting shot after shot down the barrel one after the other so it's getting hot. I know someone who bought a .22-250 2nd hand and who uses it for deer trips to Scotland and the odd shot on the range (tends to use rim-fire for target because of the cost). She's had it over 2 years now, and the barrels still going strong although she only takes a few deer trips a year. There's no clue as to how many previous shots have been made. However, going back -
Any Thoughts On The .204 Ruger Calibre?
Alsone replied to shropshire dan's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
Not likely to be an issue for most people within a normal time scale. You do accelerate the wear with a fast round like 22-250, but I'd expect you to get around 3-4,000 rounds down it before you had any serious wear issues. Considering the average non professional probably shoots on average a couple of foxes a night (allowing for blank nights and single nights as well as the more productive ones), then if you go out foxing once a week, even allowing for a couple of misses, you're probably shooting an average of maybe 5 rounds per night. Allowing for 1 trips per week, year round with no -
To Soon To Apply For Different Gun ?
Alsone replied to Adrian Prisk's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
Seems to me the only person here unclear of what vermin means is you. The police do not/will not, need to bring a case to court for clarity, vermin is defined in the English language. Nobody is pushing any boundary, if your FAC says vermin, then you can shoot fox, as the OP has already been told by his FEO, which part of that says vermin is not fox and needs clarification? Deker I already explained what the possibilities are. In the absence of a precedent, the guidelines could be taken by a Court to classify fox outside of the normal meaning of "vermin". But play the dictio -
To Soon To Apply For Different Gun ?
Alsone replied to Adrian Prisk's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
One very good reason for bringing a case in law is to bring clarity. That doesn't mean a force will and it doesn't mean they won't. You just can't be sure either way. All you can be sure of is that one day in the absence of a clarifying definition from the authorities, one day, a force somewhere will bring a test case as to the definition, and you don't want to be the subject of that. Like I said above, I know how the Courts work, and there are 2 views a judge could take. It's not worth the gamble. Also, why do you think the BASC advised him not to use it for fox even after what the FE -
To Soon To Apply For Different Gun ?
Alsone replied to Adrian Prisk's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
Deker I don't totally disagree. However, I know how the Courts work and IF an FEO decided to prosecute for shooting outside of the permitted species, then in the absence of a precedent case from a "high" Court (as in higher Court not High Court (I'm not aware of any but then again I'm not a Firearms legal expert)), it's 50:50 as to which way a judge would go. A judge who leans towards human justice would probably err towards the deinition you posted and give the Defendent the benefit of the doubt. A judge who was a stickler for the law, would probably view it in terms of the Firearms Defin
