  1. West Mercia are okay with 17HMR for fox.
  2. Last season it dawned on me that I should be using the liver from ducks I shot. I had a closer look at a few and noticed that some were not a uniform colour i.e. not 100% dark red. At first I thought maybe this was a duck with an illness (heavy drinker??!) but it was the same with quite a few I saw. Anyone have a view on what they should look like?
  3. think i might join sacs next year. basc have disappointed me when i needed them, i also think their enthusiasm for members to submit an online game book is misguided and - in the (inevitable) wrong hands - it could backfire badly.
  4. Due to the wet weather, the farmer on my shoot did not plant any winter wheat and just has spring barley (cheaper for me to buy from farmer than buy elsewhere). What do ducks or pheasants think of barley compared to wheat?
  5. I got one of these included when I bought my .17HMR, I recall the brand is Hoopes. I tried to use it yesterday and could not pull it through the bore as it got stuck - I am a fairly strong fella but I found it impossible and in the end gave up. Anyone else had this problem or is this "operator error"? Maybe they gave me the wrong size snake.
  6. HMRHunter - all sorted now (see previous page). No explanation given but I have decided against trying to embarrass them even more.
  7. There seems to be conflicting opinion on this. What's the balance of opinion out there?
  8. Any of you fellas ever done it??
  9. As a follow-up to this i have had a reply back from the issuing force saying that because .22rf is already approved for the land, "of course .17hmr is acceptable". Totally contradicts their first letter. No explanation, no apology. They did take the opportunity to say that the landowner does not want foxes shot, once again, but i knew that anyway. A positive ending but a bizarre story. PS They are ok with me using it for fox on my other land (although that won't be my primary target).
  10. I have written back questioning it and also making the point that due to its flat shooting characteristics and less chance of ricochets, the .17HMR is a safer round than the .22rf which they say the land is cleared for. Will report back when I get a reply but it is very frustrating to have to point out such simple facts.......
  11. I'm pretty sure they did inspect it because the landowner said she had made an appointment to inspect it a few days before. The letter from the police also said the landowner did not want foxes shot (i know that already - not sure why they said that) so they had obviously spoken.
  12. Cheers Mike. Weird though because I shoot my shotgun there (keeping a polite distance from any house) and it's far noisier than a .17HMR.
  13. I think what's happened is that they granted me the certificate off the back of the one piece of land they had inspected at that point. I assumed they had checked both although wasn't told. So I bought my .17 rifle and now they are saying they have got around to checking the other piece of land and it's apparently not suitable for .17 - although they did say it was cleared for .22. I don't know how it can be safe for one and not for the other.
  14. You're right, but if it's an unsafe shot with a .17HMR then I reckon it's still unsafe with a .22 - although my local force obviously don't agree with this. I'd be interested to hear if anyone else has a take on this.
  15. I recently applied for a FAC. The firearms officer came to visit and he agreed that the .17HMr was the right calibre for my needs. I put forward the two farms where I have permission. The FAC duly arrived so I went out and purchased my new .17HMR. I then had a letter saying that one of the two farms I had put forward could not be cleared for .17HMR but .22rf was okay. It seems they issued the FAC on the strength of one farm but had not inspected the other farm at that point. Having just spent £600, I feel pretty let down by the process. It also seems pretty odd that they say I can'
  16. I've just started off with my first rifle, mainly for rabbits and the odd crow etc. What would you guys recommend as a gun rest when out shooting as I notice that beyond 50 yards the cross hairs are moving significantly? I will be walking hedgerows and doing a bit of lamping. Thanks
  17. Had them off there before bud real bad hatch rate once bitten twice shy, It was ebay mate I tried for two yrs all under bantams, and they were good brooders both had hatched chicks before, granted not partridge chicks, but both birds were not novices, I've had eggs sent from ebay a few times - all v poor hatch rates. I pick them up in person now - much better success rate. I think the post does something to them.
  18. No idea Roebuck. Okay, I've never had a rifle before but I am a long term shotgun certificate holder, no issues, no (criminal) record. Just an ordinary working bloke with a good understanding that safety comes first. Maybe it's a change of emphasis from West Mercia. I just wish they would explain themselves a bit more openly than stick on the condition at the last minute.
  19. As a BASC member for many years they were my first port of call. I have to say that, whilst sympathetic to my situation, they had nothing to offer. If BASC is "the best Firearms consultative team in the UK or even Europe for that matter" then I have nowhere else to go with it. I'll serve my time with my mentor and make an application to have the condition removed in a while.
  20. On a related topic, I've just had a FAC for a .17HMR granted by West Mercia and they put a mentoring/ supervisory condition on it. Not mentioned by the officer who came to my house. No explanation. No information on how to apply to have it lifted. Bizarre. Luckily the local gamekeeper lives nearby and he is happy to help. Perhaps they are being told to toughen up their system.
  21. I also reckon it is okay for early season evening flights when the ducks come in relatively light conditions and can see a long way. By December, when they are coming in in virtual darkness, I won't be using it.
  22. I bought a Lucky Duck from Cabelas last year because it had better owner reviews than the mojo. It is wind-powered (I understand the battery-powered ones are illegal to use in the UK??) and therefore useless in calm conditions - frequent last season. Great for attracting ducks during daylight or early dusk when they can see it from a distance, but I found it actually scared ducks at late dusk because they only noticed it when they were on their final approach and you could tell they were alarmed (couldn't tell if it was the movement or the whirring noise they didn't like). I actually lost o
  23. I may just keep my head down and apply to get the supervisory condition taken off in a few months. Still have no real idea how I go about doing that - you would think the police would provide advice or at least explain their reasoning. I guess a letter from my local keeper will suffice. Any ideas welcome.
