  1. 1/2 cross collie would be a good first workin lurcher mate. Relatively easy to train, good natural instincts. My first bitch was collie/grey she made my novice training attempts look much more impressive than I deserved, natural hunter. If you decide after 2 or 3 seasons that quarry/countryside around you warrants something a bit quicker you can always breed out to the 3/4 cross, easy if you get a dog pup. My advice would be a bitch tho, seem to respond to training a bit more readily. Dog pups can be a bit bolshy as adolescents its in their instinct to have a go at being dominant/alpha male, n
  2. Note to self - wait until at least lunchtime... Learned that one meself mate, lol, golden rule is: If you read somethin that makes you think 'Are you for fookin real' read it again.
  3. I get yer drift mate, but bein a bit of a smart arse I cant help meself from correcting you. Hares are native always have being fer like, hundred of thousands of years. The romans fetched rabbits with them from their territories in Hispanica (modern day spain/portugal so followin wharriers logic we should only use Galgo's and Ibizan Hounds on em!). The Romans did'nt bring sighthounds either, Celtic coursing hounds were exported from Britannia all over the empire they were one of the high value items that the romans noted on their pre-conquest recce. There are several references to 'very fine
  4. feck me that place makes the fens look like Asda's carpark, that desert hare looked half shagged to me, mebee the pups dam ran it first!
  5. Back in the lurcher game after a long break. Wanting a working beardie/gh hybrid, no bull or saluki (nowt against em just not what I need). Will go to a good working home and experienced handler. I know Hancock has beardie studs and if I cant get a home bred pup I'll go there. Would be nice to know that the sire/dam are regularly doing the business tho. Also looking at something past the first x maybe 3/4 or 5/8 gh but wouldn't rule out a half bred pup. Prepared to put a deposit down to secure a bitch pup. Anyone fancy puttin up some pics of their 3/4 bred beardie lurchers? cheers all.
  6. I would've thought the first x might be a bit heavy thorny, you'd mebee get 1 or two relatively racy pup in a litter tho. 3/4 x on this thread looks a cracker. I'd ask that fella about his dogs sire or dam one of them must be first x
  7. If you're after a collie cross with definate known pedigree, that is tatoo'd, wormed and had first innocuations, he's your man. Holding a breeders licence for as long as he has is no easy task, you have regulations up the arse, inspections etc. etc. Personally I'd prefer a home bred pup with the added reassurance you get knowing at least either dam or sire is regularly doing the business. That said, this time out I' m after a beardie/x and the fact is that altho you do see plenty of good ones on here ( many hancock bred) finding a litter with the right working beardie blood can be hard work, a
  8. @echo I'm guessing you mean herding instinct on the sheep, not the killer variety
  9. long time since I seen a wheaten grey knockin about, used to be loads round my way.
  10. Bonny pup that one fella. Fancy the beardie cross meself, had a hancock bitch years ago, couldn' t fault her. Just wish they had a half bred stud (beardie/gh). Anyone planning on a 3/4 or 5/8 greyhound cross to tom muirhead beardie lines can put me down for a bitch. Failing that I'd take a punt on a pup by hancocks wilson or del boy. Your pup just made up me mind on that one!
  11. Cheers lads. @echo gonner have a look at that dog by del boy now, dont mind the hancocks my bitch was by his border/ beardie 1/2 cross stud too. Fancy the pure working beardie cross this time but I dont think he breeds past the 1/2 cross, his beardie studs are full bred as far as I know. Prefer a home bred pup out of a proven dam (if that dam is Hancock fair enough) but if all else fails I' d take a punt on one of his first crosses, he's got the right beardie lines. How many first crosses have genuine working (hunting) sire and dam anyhow?
  12. Alright all, I started with Lurchers back in 98, when as newbie to it I was talked into parting with £50 for a four month old bitch. The lad told me he was selling it on because it was too 'jumpy' and had never really settled in to his (quite manic) household. He had a great tribe of hyperactive kids who were forever messing with it, and to say the house was ' bit noisy' is like saying crack cocaine is a 'bit more-ish'. Anyway the pup looked like it could do with some peace and quiet so I took her on. Best decision I ever made. Turns out she was Hancock 3/4 bred, and before the effluent s
