  1. Are you asking if rough ground/grass tussocks will slow a dog? then the answer is yes, proportional to the amount it slows the quarry
  2. like the sound of that one ghostie, if you do get chance mate, like to see a pic.....cheers.
  3. Do a 'forest schools' search for your area, there's quite few places that do em, usually different age groups/ days for the kids......good luck, sounds like you're on to summat givin him responsibility for the dog Never met a young lad yet that wasnt fascinated by rabbiting, he'll click when he's ready.
  4. Too right mate, my eldest lass Katie (9) brought her mate with her one day after school to 'help' me do a few jobs at the Forest Garden I look after. The kid was scared of everything, mud, thorns, nettles,insects,fungus....just never spent any time outdoors. We host 'forest schools' for the nursery across the railway, kids of around 4 come down with parents/nursery staff and do camp building, dens, hide and seek, a bit of teaching like 'this is oak' or 'these are ash' but mostly just lettin em run about getting shit up! Does em good, kids just dont play out anymore 'cottonwool kids syndrome' p
  5. Hoping to see my lad out with the pup when it arrives, spent half my childhood ferreting wi me grandad and uncle but my lads nearly six now and never had a dog. Anyway, moving soon...new place has room for dogs, so I'll be making up for lost time, reckon a responsive quick learning type wi a bit of character will be perfect to teach him about training, patience using the right tone and body language...gonna be a lot of fun, might even put a few bunnies in the freezer.
  6. Thanks for the replies folks, think I'm leaning towards a terrier x beagle or spaniel (the missus went gooey eyed at the black and tan Teckel/Beagles on the Bushing thread....job done ) Some really good stuff there, learning a bit more with every post, keep it coming.
  7. Not sure I'd go with a full sighthound/coursing type for a bushing/rabbiting lurcher I'd be looking for something a bit more able to take direction and be biddable/controllable as poss. But thats just my opinion I'm sure there'll be some out there doing the job.
  8. Dont worry about the breeds/fractions mate it'll make your head spin and you still wont be any better off. Go for a type you like the look of (or have an idea what sire/dam might throw) out of a dog and bitch doing the job you want to do. Good grown dogs trained and ready to go are like hens teeth only rarer. Not always, but there's usually summat up wi em, like skycat said it might not manifest itself till your on your permission. People just dont tend to part wi handy trained dogs. Good luck mate, all the best with your family and lurchers, sounds like you've had a bumpy couple of years bu
  9. If we'd moved to the new house.....hope he gets sorted wi somewhere permanent, he's earned that much.
  10. Spaniel looks like a real handy sort mate, little black uns a corker aswell.
  11. cheers lads good stuff. Crackin thread that darbo, thanks anyway mate What about whirrier types, they as keen to get into the rough and push stuff out?
  12. They look big and mean enough Joe, but they mostly feed on insects, small rodents, dead carcasses, they dont have the strength in the talons of say a Goshawk, more of an oppotunist/scavenger, thats why they do so well, tons of em about like you said. Mate reckons he's seen one giving a lambing ewe a hell of a time tho..peckin at the arse end. Do they not call em 'tourist eagles' up your way!
  13. Fine lookin beast that one mate, atb wi her
  14. looking good mate. Cream bitch looks class, but the broken coat is my type of dog, good luck wi em
  15. c'mon lads the missus was nipped by a terrier when she was a wee lass so need some positive experiences wi em round kids or she's gonna veto the fecker. Throw us a feckin bone here lads, and if you're tell me to grow a pair then you're obviously single and dont know the score when it comes to mothers and kids (and you've not met the missus!) Some types more likely to get the arse than others? (talkin dogs now not wives) what cross bred types work well? does spaniel or beagle give em more reliable temperament? honest experience please....cheers now. I'm confident I could train/socialize so it
  16. yeah I though maybe a cocker or x, like I said no experience in this so would'nt know what works well and what doesnt, general advice or experience of peoples (maybe first) dedicated bushing type would be handy. Must admit I do like terriers, me brothers dog never did much of owt really, but what a character, crackin 'pub dog' probly supped more kilkenny than me some days! he was sound round most people, just didnt know what to make of the little uns, made him grumbly an edgy, had to keep him out the way.
  17. well done jess, pup looks good, done her proud
  18. Coming back to lurcher work after a long break, got the pup ordered out of a local bitch that Ive seen workin well, pup due either later this year or possibly next spring. Years ago my last two, I only ever worked over ferrets or on the lamp, only bushing we ever done was with me wading in with wellies and a long stick and pokin about to push out bunnies for the dogs. Anyhow I'm not as young as I was back then an I reckon a good wee bushing pup could be just the job to bring on while I'm waitin on the lurcher pup. It'd have to be 100% round kids, other dogs. Ive no experience of terriers bar m
  19. It's ingenuity like that that made Britain Great, fair play!
  20. have to be an artificial insemination that one! f**k me the mechanics of doing it natural dont bare thinking about!

  22. Looks like he'll be a good strong un.
  23. Life dont get any better than that mate, My lads six this time, gonna bring him wi me to get the next pup atb fella.
  24. You ever hunted in the winter months mate only kidding. When I never knew any better a long time ago, it was magical going out in the summer at 3 in the morning Aye know what you mean mate, I leave the game alone summer tho, more to go at when the kids are back at school The sun does rise and set sept thru march tha knows Got brought on years ago goin out with me grandad and his whippets, you respect the game, or pretty soon there is none. Be lyin if I said Ive never let the dog run a summer bunny, just now and again.
