    maximus ferret.the saluki has got some idea of the chase but the deerhound has not really got a clue.in different hands from a pup the deerhound would be more keen he was not really intrested in chaseing at all.this is what happens when people get hold of dogs which are not being used for the task they were bred for .breeding for looks instead of ability is the main cause of breeds of dog degradeing into parodys of whaht they should be .strict working standards is the only way to go for all dog breeds.breed from dogs with good working credentials not rosettes which are very hard to digest.as

    edrd.my friend 1980 owned a deerhound x greyhound called bran 85lbs 29 at the shoulder i saw him kill 2out of 2 on young corn and he was very consistent on hares .tremendous stamina and good on deer preban very hard powerful built dog.

    the problem is that some deerhoundxgreyhounds are badly bred and some salukixgreyhounds are badly bred .you cannot judge any cross by the bad excamples you can only judge by watching the best of any cross. the dog in any cross that has superiour speed with stamina is going to pick up the hare preban before the dog with lower speed especially if run in singles not pairs .all i can say is that those who say sxg are rubbish have not seen a good one and those who say dxg are rubbish have not seen a good one

    i have seen some really good dxg on hares preban.they are very fast strong and have great stamina .good ones are faster than sxg top end .they are bigger more powerful with good stamina and good ones are very fast ..so why are there not very many about now days ?

    brookie.i have seen countles owners with brainless dog lamps rabitts close to hedges .the dogs have wasted lots of energy running 60 yds at full speed a lot of the time for nothing especially if the rabitts have been lamped before they are not comeing out again in a hurry.its not jacking its useing its intelligeince and asessing the situation.my first dog most of the time would not chase rabitts unless the situation was right he realised if he went up slow and silent he could catch a fair few on the squat.he was not a jacker you cant catch big deer nearly every night preban after walking seve

    beast.obviously rhidge x mal they would be no good for hunting.but if you had one and someone got into your backyard and tried to burgle your house while you was out lamping .and the kids and missus were alone in the house or some lowlife tried to steal your dogs.and the dog did the buissnes you would soon change your tune .or if your child went missing and a good german shepherd tracked him or her down .then you would be realiseing there are some wonderful breeds of dog in exsitence and that they all deserve to respected for the work they do .it really pisses me off how some of you run dow

    i like a dog to be clever.but sometimes especially with gsdxg they have the ability to think for themselves .if they think when older that a hare cant be caught they will stop .just as a wolf would test its victims no sense in running ragged for no result.if the rabitt is to close to the hedge they wont run .or they wait for another dog to push the game towards them .there are two types of clever there is subservient clever or independent clever.the only drawback with independent thinking dogs is somtimes you can get angry with there disobedience and then realise that there judgemeant is far

    andy was whippett dog cross gxlab he was a great rabitt dog and could catch the odd daylight hare preban quarter lab quarter greyhound hailf whippett.he used to trot just like a well bred whippett well up on his toes great stamina and very obedient i wish he was still with us he was a top quality lurcher

    desertbred.i canna no stand it i am going to have to breed these crosses just to prove my point.it is a well known fact that gsd could take foxes preban and a ridgeback is faster than a gsd.my german shepherds kill a fox while hunting.you tube only a young fox but two good trackers in action

    english bulldog.ridgebackxgreyhound would catch very few rabitts as they are going to be very big and heavy.on foxes the sheer power and weight would make them into fox destroyers preban also on deer preban they would be excellent.i would espect one or two to catch the odd hare or two preban,see .rhodesian ridgebacks vs quadbike- ridgebacks raceing /you tube very powerful dogs good stamina and not slow either

    borderscott .you are right it is time to get dogs in among stock at 8wks onwards.my friends whippets are not ok with stock with horses one wants to play with them and one wants to bark and chase them.he should have done ther training when very small this is why takeing a pup out does them good.tho i must say you have to constanly reinforce in some dogs .i did not think my gsdxg would turn into a mutton mauler he had been trained from 8wks old..one day out chaseing squirrells he sudenlly turned for no reason at all .by the time i had got to him he had grabbed 6 sheep by the ears and had killed

    matt therat.i apologise for my previous comment i should not get so heated sorry.i have seen some hares badly mangled by shotgun blasts and i have seen some hares when coursed by dogs badly strecthed and torn .im not saying all hares are blown to bits that is just a exspression of feeling.up my way we do have a fair few pikeys driveing up and down fields in fourwheel drives courseing milky hares out of season.i saw one last week at ledburn going up and down a ploughed field on a quad.

    matt the rat.its up to your judgemeant how you conduct your hunting.i am sure the north american indian was well pleased when the white man shot all of his buffalow.and they were starveing to death .im sure the north american passenger pigeon was over the moon to see millions of his fellow pigeons blasted into esxtinction.i hate seeing hare shoots and i have come to hate shotguns..i have dealt with people like you before who think they are clever untill they get up one morning and find thier poults have mysteriously died over night.proper hunting pish

    jf1970.if shotguns and rifels were ever totally banned the hare population would soon recover as i have said before any one can learn to shoot a shotgun any one can learn to set up a high powered rifle.on a hare shoot the kill rate is 65 percent which means shoot at 200 hares only 70 survive that is of course if you have not saturated the field with guns then none will escape .to me shotguns and rifels are not sporting tools they are murder tools.i like to see any animal to be given fair law no light blinding it no hypersonic bullet up its arse. natures law flesh against flesh fit man fit dog

    it was up to the lurcher owner preban how he takes his hare.but i must say that i have preban seen lots of dogs take hares illuminatted by a 55 watt lamp.yet in the daylight these self same lurchers were just not good enough for daylight hares. i know you get the odd hare that preban ran well in the lamp.but generally speaking how fast and well would you run if someone was flashing a 55watt lamp into your eyes.the only decent courses in the lamp i have seen preban is when the hare was on the outer range of the beam and was not being blinded .nowdays 100 watt lamps are common .so i should ima

    lowplains drifter.up my way they have just got planning to build a retail park plenty of brown envelopes exchahged on this one.only place where threres a decent lot of rabitts .hopefully they wont get that much intrest from retailers which will delay its building.my mate said to me years ago why are they building a big tesco and a big morrisons the town is not big enough for both of them? i said its called forward planning they know houses are going to be built here.he said its got to go before the planning comitte i said that is just to make it look legit.they have allready passed it along wi
