iworkwhippets. hardly a deer or hare dog are they .more of a ferreters or a sunday walkers dog.when you go on woburn estate or rothschilds its not as easy as courseing on farmer browns field.the reason the hares were there in very large numbers is because it was full of gamekeepers.now the game keepers have gone so have the hares.the best hare grounds are nearly allways protected.brockett hall was also gamekeeper land which my friend failed to mention.unless of course you are the invisible man .if you course keeperd ground in the end you will get caught .if you lamp it at 3 in the morning you

dai dogs.i think some of the younger lads on here will be very surprised .in a few years that thier urge to kill has died down.it comes to most of us .i remember reading about a man who would hunt anything phil drabble of pedigree unknown.as he got older he was more concerned with preservation.than with hunting

running addiction.i had been done for hares several times before that plus deer poaching and i did not fancy some more porridge.my freedom is worth more than that .besides which .i didnt think the dog was going to make the grade .it gets very cold in stafford in the winter especially when all of the windows have been knocked out

bunnys.thanks for thaht info .maybe it is better to die standing up than dying on ones knees -
raindeer.years ago a man had a pair of dxg .he used to lamp a place called bluebell woods .he killed nearly every hare on there and there was a lot on that ground.lots of so called good hare dogs have been seen to be ok behind 55watts .its a whole different game in the daylight

craigluckyjihad.im glad to read you got plenty of hares.being a old fogey i only like my home ground. only time i went courseing on strange ground got chased in the eighties brockett hall and had to leave a dog behind .

paulus.one of the reasons i gave up lurchers some time ago .is you canott chase whaht is not there.in 1970 when i went first went coursing i never thought things could get this bad hare wise.there are plenty of deer and a few rabitts but deer just get you into to much trouble .if the mobile phone had not been invented things would be a lot diffferent.nowdays any oik out in the countryside only has to make a call on his ten pound tesco mobile and before you know whaht happend .its the police in a four wheel drive and the bloody police helicopter overhead .if there no hares its pointless havei

david.kean.21/i have walked the ground in the dark with a good spotlight and the hares are not there.there not there early morning either.no forms no crap nothing .if they were about my binos would pick out in the hares sitting out in the young green corn .maybe not all of them but some would be laying in forms out there

the last couple of weeks i have been out with the binoculars looking about for deer hares rabitts etc not to chase just to see them is nice.up where i live the hares seem to have dissapeared on my old courseing grounds there is not one to be seen. lots of hares in the seventies now theres none at all .i have walked a fair few miles and seen only one .and that run like a dog was on its tail..seen a few muntys cwd the odd rabitt .hows the hare situation in other parts of the country .up in my part of the country south beds the hares are very thin on the ground

Any Pictures Of Gsdxg Or Gsdxlurchers

kranky.the barasingha was at woburn abbey 1974 as are the pere david.the barasingha was a female very fast take off speed and the pere david there was in a herd of them he chased them and i thought i was going to be trampled to death i thru myself down onto the floor if they had hit me it would have been game over.very heavy powerful deer .sounded like a cavalry charge .i did not realise how big they were .one split from the group and hit a four bar gate smashed the gate down at full speed and snapped its neck.it was so big i had to dissect it to get it into a lotus cortina boot and it was so -
low plains drifter. i remember courseing one hare in the 1970 era the dog turned it several times .then the hare put on its turbo and shot off like a rocket on legs it even rattled the metal four bar gate on its way out of the field.my mates dxg coursed the same hare a few weeks later and after a 4 minute course it jumped the railway line fence and was gone .quickest strongest hare i have ever seen

cjr .i remember 1973 going courseing with the gypsies with my gsdxg .they said to big to heavy 27 inches 75lbs went into woburn park preban caught 9 cwd in the dark no lamp needed .one had a cxg great on rabitts in the lamp was catching most of the rabitts.said that gsdxg is useless,i said to him we will go courseing in the morning at mentmore we put up a few hares preban his dog led on the run up to the hares but once the hare got into stride the cxg just was not fast enough .the gsd xg made the cxg look very slow on daylight hares .he like some good hare dogs was not made for rabitts but o -
Deerhound X Greyhound Hares Preban
blackgreyhound replied to blackgreyhound's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
edrd.i think you are correct that some excamples would throw back its like all ridgebacks dont have the ridge .i remember the deerhound greyhounds of my youth were tall heavy built and they had big heads .they looked like the big heavy built greyhounds you occasionally see .i do remember they all had bigger heads than the deerhound sire .thats why i like the look of bullxgrey they have the big heads on them.in lurchers i like big powerful dogs well muscled with large heads .as you say the deerhounds of today would not last two minutes in the yard with the original type.once people dont work do -

the only deerhoundsi have seen lately look very weak and skinny .my friend had one in the 1970 era called bess she was very big and very powerfully made .nice wide back on her .i had a deerhoundxgreyhound mid 1990 it was 34 at the shoulder but very skinny for its height and very under powered.in the middle ages the deerhounds we see today would have been put in the bucket at birth .most are useless skinny underpowerd badly bred with low prey drive..if you look at pictures of the original bulldog it looks nothing like the pieces of crap they breed nowdays.the same is true about german shepherd -
fitchet.the more i see of these bull x grey the more tempted i am .i just canott resist strong powerful looking lurchers.they are so muscular and powerful and look like they can do the buissness
-
laracroft. that is a nice looking powerful built lurcher

borderscott .i only have had two dogs that i consider to be good one was spider gsdxg very clever very strong and very fast 27 inch 75lbs caugtt 7 hares one morning daylight. 240 deer by the time he was 5 caught most deer in the dark. over 500 hares used to put his head underwater to pull out moorhens .and charlie deerhoundlurcherx gsd 24 ins 60lbs never ever refused to chase would chase hares beagle style for miles caught lots of cwd preban in the dark .made faster lurchers look soft. genuine dog gave his all every time.would go thru the thickest bramble after muntys preban .would push anyt

Deerhound X Greyhound Hares Preban
blackgreyhound replied to blackgreyhound's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
jack68. i think lurchers are a bit like race horses some run better on lighter ground some run better on heavier ground.this allways needed to be taken into consideration when running on hares preban .my best dog prefered to run on ground with a bit of give in it .he was very heavy built and could run on any ground but heavier going allowed him to turn easier because of the give in the ground .also its not so damageing on the dogs body.how tall was she and how much did she weigh.? -
we all have had good dogs over the years. the one that towers above the rest.lets hear of the best dog you have ever owned .whether rabitt deer or hare preban or good all rounder.and why it was so special

Deerhound X Greyhound Hares Preban
blackgreyhound replied to blackgreyhound's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
edrd i must agree with you .we all have one dog which the others will not ever compare to at the time i did not realise how good spider was .i took it for granted that my next dog would be as good but i was sadly mistaken .most of them had the stamina none of them had his speed and none of them had his cleverness.
