.22Lr Ammo, Eley Subs Or Winchester Subs ?
kenj replied to fox assasin's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
In my Magtech semi auto, the 42 grain Winchesters cycle well. On the same 50 yard zero as RWS subs, they were on average 1/4 inch higher on paper despite the extra weight, although of course they are also a faster bullet. Eleys were always my preferred bullet in the Magtech 7022, being quiet and very accurate, but unavailable locally. These Winchesters have more of a bark and are chest shot bunny stoppers at 70 yards. -
.22Lr Ammo, Eley Subs Or Winchester Subs ?
kenj replied to fox assasin's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
42 grain Winchester subs for me now in my Magtech semi auto. Much more knock down power than RWS and just as accurate. No run offs yet. This was my latest blog. http://www.urbanfieldsportsman.com/index.php/42-grain-winchester-22-subsonic-long-range-field-test/ -
I have exactly the same rifle. At close range the exit wounds are not pretty, even chest shots can blow out the stomach. Had mine a bit longer, heavy yes, but a very stable platform for shooting prone from a bipod for those distant rabbits.

Would Love Some Information On The Cz 452 .22Lr !
kenj replied to fox assasin's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
I have the CZ452 heavy 16 inch barrel Varmint iin HMR. Once I'd fitted the trigger kit and eased the stock, which was touching the barrel on the left hand side, it has been extremely accurate, even surviving a couple of bullets stuck in the barrel, due to the dreaded HMR split cases. The 452 bolt action is smooth and precise to use. Mine is still feeding and ejecting perfectly after ten year's use. -
.22Lr Ammo, Eley Subs Or Winchester Subs ?
kenj replied to fox assasin's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
I have a Magtech .22 semi auto, which preferred Eley subs, being quiet and very accurate, but in my area the Eleys became unobtainable and tried 40 grain Winchesters, which were a nightmare, misfiring and jamming. I then changed to RWS, which were as accurate as the Eleys, with no jams, but did not knock the rabbits down as well. I now can't get the RWS and tried the 42 grain Winchester. Slightly noisier, these don't jam and are as accurate as the RWS, more puff in the catridge gives a higher speed bullet. I did an in depth review, comparing the two on my blog. http://www.urbanfieldsportsman.c -
Career 707 .22 Pellet Swap From Bisley Magnums To H&n Fields
kenj replied to kenj's topic in General Airgun Discussion
Just ordered 200 Barracuda Extreme from Uttings. Had no problems with the H&N Field Trophy in my Webley Viper, so I'll give the brand a go. I like the look of the cross hollow point, 19 gr., good for over 30 lb and classed as long range, which get me out to my 50 yards. They arrive Tuesday, just in time for a field test. Thanks all for the feedback. -
Career 707 .22 Pellet Swap From Bisley Magnums To H&n Fields
kenj replied to kenj's topic in General Airgun Discussion
When I bought the Career second hand a dozen years ago, the PO had the full size rifle and a carbine for sale. Comparing the two, the carbine is a better handling rifle, although it takes less charge, but this has not proved a disadvantage, giving around 20 full power shots per charge, which is more than enough for a couple of hours bunny bashing. It is much lighter than my CZ 452 HMR Varmint, which is a real muscle builder. I think the 18 gr pellet is the way to go on this variable permission, where I'll be shooting at close range under buildings one minute, then over open ground at cricket p -
Career 707 .22 Pellet Swap From Bisley Magnums To H&n Fields

I've just read the Uttings reviews. Lots of damaged skirts in the tin. Never had that with Bisleys. Maybe I'll have to keep looking. -
Career 707 .22 Pellet Swap From Bisley Magnums To H&n Fields
kenj replied to kenj's topic in General Airgun Discussion
Thanks for the info Phil. I did wonder whether the H&Ns would hold up to the FAC power. The Air Arms Heavy sound like a good compromise at 18 gr. The Bisleys are a very accurate pellet in the Career, but very loopy at range. I was out last night and have literally only a few left. Clicking on Uttings now. -
On my latest permission in a park, I am limited to air rifle only between dusk and dawn, which has meant that I am shooting rabbits with my 28 lb FAC Career 707 carbine at ranges under 10 yards out to 50 yards with 21 grain Bisley Magnums zeroed at 30 yards. This has needed some quick thinking regarding hold over and hold under with head shots at the various ranges and have missed some absolute sitters. With the Bisleys running low, I am considering switching to the shorter and lighter 14.6 grain H&N Field Trophys, that I use with my 12 lb Webley Viper. Before making the fiddly adjustm

If you fancy a semi auto, look round for a Magtech 7002 .22lr. It won't break the bank. I've had mine for 10 years and it's still knocking over bunnies. Since using Winchester 42 grain subs, I've had zero recycling problems. I've used a 10/22 in the US, not a patch on the Magtech. With a Career 707 .22 carbine PCP FAC at 28 ft lbs, the Magtech and a CZ452 HMR Varmint with 16 inch barrel, I'm just about set up for all the bunny bashing I do, although I'm waiting for a variation for a .17 WSM.

30 yards standing is about my limit. I try to shoot off my bag, or a fence post for longer shots. 25 yards max with my Relum springer.

I've probably missed more rabbits, that popped out 5 to 10 yards in front of me than those at 40 yards and above. On one farm, a meadow was 50 yards from fence to fence, with rabbits on the hedge line and open ground in between. My FAC Career 707 carbine is rated at 28 ftlb and using 21 gn Bisley magnums, I set up targets at 50 yards and with the rifle rested on my bag was consistantly well within the 30mm dia bull. I had been ignoring these rabbits, but they were "annoying" the farmer, so I set up and went for the shots. Most were first head shot kills with hardly a kick, while others flipped

Lucky man, it's a 30 mile drive for me. I've never got upstream beyond that bridge. What is the fishing like? Up from the A4 it's all little eddies and groins, but doesn't look as inviting further upstream. Any suggestions? Could be another blog.

Many years ago I got invited to fish on the lower Test near Broadlands. The chairman of our club had salmon, trout and sea trout fishing there and once a year we had a winter match on it. All the coarse fish had to be tipped into a small hatch stream, while all the grayling caught were killed. These days these game rivers expect to be paid for this out of season fishing and all grayling returned. I must say they were very tasty grayling. Best I had was about 2lb. I had a Salisbury and District Avon game ticket for about 10 years, where we could take two trout and two grayling a visit. Also

I got treated to a day at Timsbury ten years ago. The small feeder stream that exits the pool near the office was full of 8oz to a pound roach. Had about 20, then switched to the main river catching grayling, all on stick float with red maggot. This was October and the sea trout were jumping all over the river, landing four and losing a couple more. Best landed 5lb. The guy who invited me was not a float angler and caught very few fish and never invited me again. The place to go these days is Wherwell Estate on the Test. Just off the A303, it's £43 a day, 11th October to 14th March. I

I have a two shot Webley Viper, can it be modified for the Raider 10 shot mag, as it's basically a cut down Raider with a shrouded barrel?
-
The "feet on the wings and pull up with the legs" method, skins and guts pheasant instantly. Just cut the wings off the clean breasts afterwards and extract the legs if you want them.

Went out today. Too cold for shooting rabbits, but collected a few pounds of sloes from a permission, where only I have access. Plenty of fruit about, but not many rabbits. This is my blog on the subject. http://www.urbanfieldsportsman.com/index.php/sloe-gin-making-a-taste-of-christmas/

.22 Rifle.... What's The Best To Buy
kenj replied to danny bull's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
I bought a Magtech .22 semi auto as a cheap starter rimfire and have not felt the need to trade up. My CZ 452 HMR is super accurate and have considered swapping the Magtech for a CZ 512, as I prefer the follow on shot option of a semi auto, but the Magtech is still paying for itself knocking over bunnies many years on, so why change? -
I was out again at the park last night. Not many rabbits about despite ideal conditions. Shot three, two with mixy. One just sat there, crept up and dispatched it at 15 yards. A sorry sight. Another was with it and trotted off, then stopped it at 25 yards. Looked ok, but was showing signs round the eyes. The other was small, but fine. Not many rabbit pies at this rate. Hard work with a 12 ftlb air rifle.

Out on another new permission this week and more myxomatosis. This is a public park restricted to air rifle only, hence my Webley Viper Venom .22. This is in north Berks. So far 50/50 infection. My original post was regarding south Bucks 15 miles away. Not looking good so far.

17 Hmr Hornady V Max Ammo Shortage
kenj replied to goldfinger's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
Wondered if it was due to split necks. Just checked my last twenty cases. 4 split necks. One had slow fired, but still killed the rabbit. -
Not shot much lately, waiting for the hay to be cut. I was checking out a new permission, which has not been shot over before, according to the farmer and was expecting to fill the freezer, so a double disappointment. Cooler days may bring better results.
