How Old Was Your Dog
low plains drifter replied to fieldsportsman's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
I took my pup out to watch his mother run a few rabbits when he was 4 months old,the bitch put a hard strike in as the rabbit got near the hedge, she missed, but as the rabbit ran alongside the hedge towards me and the pup,the little fella did'nt make the same mistake,he was only supposed to be a spectator and was on a lead,I allowed the pup a chance to run with the bitch that same night on one rabbit, just to see what he would do,when the bitch stopped at the edge of the field, the pup jumped into the rough cover and managed to catch the rabbit,I,m certainly not saying you should start them so y -
Very easy for a less than interested Turnip head to get their hands on a dog,run it without bothering to put any thought into the dogs fitness, then throw the towel in,when they realise the time and effort required to have a decent dog,You dont run a marathon to get fit!

Supposedly a cross between the old herding dogs used by drovers and a greyhound,if you can go back in time a couple of centuries you might be able to find one

Bad But Lucky Cut From Wire Fence
low plains drifter replied to Greensmen's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
one injury that can occur from a lurcher that jumps a barbed wire fence and gets it's back quarters hung up,around the saddle area,I know of 2 bitches that got this injury the first one was stitched and it tightened her skin to the extent that she walked with a strange movement, the other one broke her stitches and recovered after being advised to treat her with antiseptic wound powder,a stitch in time saves 9 lol -

Bad But Lucky Cut From Wire Fence

was talking to a farmer a while ago and asked him why they have to use barbed wire,He said years ago it was all hawthorn hedging, and the wire is a modern and quick fix solution, the countryside and it's wildlife must have been a much healthier place before that stuff started being used ,even the livestock that it is supposed to stop from straying can get pretty badly damaged by it,I remember one night out lamping we saw a sheep that had tore off about a six foot length of its fleece and was still attached to the fence, wonder if the farmer would have given me permission if i told him i'd helped -
martial arts /boxing lessons instill a sense of pride in yourself and respect for others, any sport is good, but not all kids take to the usual football or rugby options

not the easiest of land to film on either, looks a lot like the land I run my dogs on,my ten year old dog put one in the bag on sunday, must be the irish terrier blood in him lol, they say the fens is the ultimate test, but i'm yet to hear of any dog taking 6 out of 6 on the rough land -
think that book was the start of a new type of lurcher book showing what the dog game is really all about,by someone that really does do the business

Come Dawn Come Dusk. By Norman Mursell
low plains drifter replied to Bosun11's topic in Hunting Book's
think I will do Bosun11, I see there is a 1996 edition on sale, another good book for anyone interested in coursing is The king of the poachers by j connell published in 1901,no saluki hybrids back in them days, but they still got a few for the pot -
hybrid l@yer hens vs other breeds
low plains drifter replied to chris87's topic in Fowl & Feather Talk
colombian blacktail which are RIR x LIGHT SUSSEX,and CORAL NICKS,which are a leghorn hybrid have been laying well for me 16 months non stop including this winter and last, medium sized eggs, breeder told me as long as they get some corn they would retain enough body heat to keep laying in the cold months, lack of daylight has'nt been a problem, bit expensive though 12.50 each -
Come Dawn Come Dusk. By Norman Mursell
low plains drifter replied to Bosun11's topic in Hunting Book's
I remember getting about half way through this book before it was due back to the library, that was 20 years ago now,and i'm still keen to read the rest,i've read a lot of other books since then, but from what i can remember that was as good as any, another very good read is the story of frank cullum Both sides of the fence about a poacher turned gamekeeper, not sure if still available, but worth a look, bought mine years ago, probably from tideline books -

There was no mention of the hare or how it was caught on the programme, maybe it was just used for ornamental reasons or as a talking point -

was watching the gypsy blood documentary the other day and noticed the coursing bitch molly is shown with a very unusually marked hare also the country mischief book features a white hare, must be something in the genes, just out of interest i've seen 3 black foxes over a 12 year period all within about a mile of eachother on land in northumberland -

The deerhound cross I had was 26 inch tts,if you can get one out of working type deerhounds rather than show bred deerhounds ,should'nt get too tall, also had a first cross bedlington greyhound bitch, ran her as a coursing bitch (pre ban)she was only 23 inch tts very game little bitch, keen on the lamp aswell, but repeated short sprints used to cause her a lot of toe and stopper injuries
