  1. After blanking my last five outings in the snow and cancelling yesterdays early morning stalk because it was tipping down(its not fun to get soaked anymore) I was up at six ,quick coffee, motor already loaded from yesterday it was just gun & dog for the five minute drive to a local farm were i do the deer control, its only 100acre but next to a 55acre wood which i also look after. With another 35 acres the far side of the wood its just short of two hundred acres. I have not been there since the snow but felt the deer would be out of the wood now things have thawed out. There are three fields
  2. Sounds a nice day art, good luck with your last few outings ...i had a quick look round a small farm i do the deer control for this morning (mon) and had a buck on the quad and back to the truck within 20 min ..just the way it goes sometimes. My last 5 outings in the snow have all drawn a blank..but with the thaw i fancied they would be on the clover and they were..good luck
  3. I am fortunate to have a small murder of haggis on one of the estates i look after ,its a fairly rugged piece of land for sussex with some heather clad hills (not up to scottish standard ) with plenty of water ,especially this year year with a plentifull supply of stovies which my wife tells me is why they appear to be thriving( she is from that manor) away from there traditional highland home. Which is why this year instead of importing one from our usual butcher Dingwalls of Cupar i decided to harvest one of our own sussex bred haggis. My plan to do an early morning recce ,locate a suitable
  4. I think if you improve the habitat that makes it a different case compleatlly to puting out piles of food to draw deer in to one spot to shoot them .Planting cover & grazing not only benifits the deer but every thing else.As mattydski said time on the ground looking & learning is the way forward.Know what you have on there before taking them off ,having shot three hinds already i would be cautious about shooting more till i knew more ! If all three were lined you have doubled up .good luck
  5. What they like of road ? Would struggle to strap a couple of carcasses on that bike but if you did it looks like you could get them to the chiller P D Q........they look the dogs !
  6. That pic has just melted my old lady, she is now cooing & sighing wreck ! great photo
  7. great pic's........that has a full set of knashers !!!
  8. Hi mate .....7m rem mag.....you aint under gunned !! That would drop everything that ever lived on your island .....With regards to the stags , where im at the bucks tend to disapear after the rut to recharge there batteries ,i sometimes see a bunch together but they are a lot less visable ,i think the deer would eat the grain ,and like most animals a regular supply of free food will get them coming in ,probable stags as well..BUT is that stalking or just deer shooting ? .....I can see putting out feed in hard times to help the deer but not just to make it easy to shoot them .a proper culling
  9. I think if you want a rimfire for rabbit & fox Providing you dont try hitting them at silly ranges the .22 would be my choice. if you hit them (foxes) front box with a .22hv it will kill them, they are cheap to buy, cheap to run. Put a decent scope on whatever you buy it will pay dividends Good luck
  10. Rob i'm culling does primarilly but if i get a buck i will put it in chiller head on for you.It will not be anything with a good head it will only be a cull animal ,if that is ok your welcome to it,it would only be discarded otherwise.Pity, i had a fairly big buck a couple of weeks ago that had been in a R T A that i got called out to put down.If any thing comes up that route again your welcome to it.If you leave a contact on the pm i'l give you a call or contact you through pm .Cheers
  11. Hi rob , do you just want any head to practice on ? if so i'm out tomorrow(sunday) and culling mon to thur ,i will definatly have some does , if you want just any head. I notice your down my way, you are welcome to come down & take it of yourself with what ever skin you need.send me your details on that message board thing !Cheers hope it helps
  12. HI Art we would have a problem finding suitable trees, whilst there are plenty of them finding one in the right place that was useable would be almost impossible.I have about 20 high seats scattered about on various estates that when you put out, have to have a prune up of the lower limbs to give a decent shooting window. Some of the guys over here probably fair better, but where i'm at just dont seem to get straight tall high limbed trees.I do have a couple of lightweight portable seats that come in usefull from time to time, but still need a pruning saw in the kit.Every year its a long job go
  13. Art,mine does, it is , she has .....!! Ps the new one is more understanding .....i like the warm weather fishing idea .
  14. Got you ,like a light weight mobile high seat, seen them on cabbellas site, that is the mother of hunting/fishing shops ! we do a bit better season wise, the fallow are in nine months of the year in total ,& when the fallow bucks finish the roe buck are in ,so if your lucky & have both you can stalk all year, rabbit squirrel, fox are classed as vermin & taken all year.Hope you finish with a good buck.
  15. Thats a short season Art, is that bucks & does ?Whats on the menu feb through to mid nov ? you cant spend nine months cleaning & dreaming of whats to come ,Is that season just the whitetails ,do you have the pronghorns & mule deer, are the seasons the same.? Climber ? Scrape line?
  16. Left home at 1 pm for a 1.30 meet with Philluk ,never met before but i made it to the meet 5min early to find Phill already there,i was hoping the partial thaw at home was also under way at the estate .It was'nt , the differance a few hundred foot makes was there to see.It looked unchanged from my blank outing two days prior. My original plan to spend a couple of hours stalking the wood then sitting up one of the high seats on the top end of the estate looking over a paddock surrounded by woodland was put on ice.!! the paddock was pure white still. Plan B stalk the woodland then sit in a high
  17. Had a 22.250 for 5 years ,shot loads of foxes & crows ,250m is a comfortable range, never had a problem with barrel .if i had to get a new .22 centre fire 223 would be my choise only because its a cheaper to run & do seem to have a better resale value. They are both a great foxing gun............ps they do move in the wind
  18. Shame about the lost one , it's a mistake that most of us ,if we're honest, have made at some point in our stalking lives. I know never stalk without the dog but that twenty min or so wait before going to look seems like a an age.In most cases you know the reaction to the shot you have got it right but its still a relief when you find it. Your daughter sounds like she's spot on ,well done.I've got two kids(adults now) neither has any intrest in shooting first or last...!good luck for the rest of your season Ps how long is your season.?
  19. Snap shot , i 've never come across rumen fluke before but given its emaciated condition you may well be right in future i will look past the obvious .many thanks ........i,l be a vetinary soon for sure............Ps funny how a lot of vets shoot .& stalk ....
  20. Littlle up date on the fluke , spoke to a couple of vet friends and they both agree that a hot dry summer would see a reduction in the cases of fluke,
  21. welcome to the hunting life
  22. bonjour mon amie.....my only words of french !
