  1. Thanks to M MAILLOT, some nice pics from Cheverny and NP.
  2. We haven't badgers in moutains (more than 2.000 m), nor in Corsica. They are very few in the South East (Provence, Languedoc near Mediteranean Sea). Except these places, Badgers are common all over in France but may be with lower density than some places in GB. The Badger's hunt is very usual in West and center regions (Normandy, Centre, Pays de Loire, Bretagne, Auvergne...). Less in south and rare in the North-East. Consequently, I'm the happiest among badger's hunter. I'm hunting in the Nord-East, we have good badgers populations and no competition. In some places, the terriermen team
  3. No, the bitch is OK. She worked during 7 hours and badgers was smarter.
  4. "If we want things to stay as they are, things will have to change." (Tancredi in The Leopard - Lampedusa)

  5. Hopefully this morning Everything goes wrong tonight. Dog retrieved at midnight.
  6. No straight rules concerning age, it depends the dog and the place. But i can say : 5 months to look at the other dogs or to smell a badger(2 or 4 times maxi), 10-11 months to work alone on little holes, more than 12 to work on big badger sets. I never let a young dog to walk free on a terrier. I'm tight on this rule. A working dog must be underground or at leash. Nothing else, no tourists during a hunt. If the dog comes out to go immediatly to another hole, it's correct. If he comes out to play or to walk, immediatly the leash. No discussion.
  7. I don't know if there's a market for fur in France. So I haven't any idea about prices.
  8. A young black dog, 5 months, looking at the olders at work. Without locator, you have to be near the ground.
  9. I have learned some important things from UK, specially concerning working dogs :-)
  10. I'm agree, it's may be easier to breed taller than smaller. And when the breeders don't work to earth, dogs become taller (Excepted some breed like Yorshire, pinscher...). But if some lads like working taller dogs, it isn't just a matter of easier good looking. Here in France, if you have to hunt badger in deep and hard soil, a strong dog is better because he must stay with the animal during a long time. On the other hand, I don't think the height is the first criteria. Concerning working dog, my favorite criteria : 1) mental 2) barking (we hunt without collar and we don't need biting
  11. Each year the 15th of september is the beginning of venerie season in France. Horses and hounds at work ! Till St Hubert's day, they hunt without the uniform of the team. After the 3th november, everyone will wear his colors. Rallye trois Forêt (photo JMG Asse)
  12. Accip74, That's an important question. In french we have a proverb like this "to live happy, live hidden". True or false ? This is a permanent debate among french hunting organisations. The hate of anti is so strong, they will do everything to kill you, even hidden. It's a matter of religion for them. If you don't show who you are, what you do in a fair way, anti will stay free to tell awful and stupid arguments. If I just want hunt for few seasons for my old days, I can stay hidden. If I want my sons could teach to my grandchildren - and further more - how to hunt badgers with do
  13. Soon the ADD meeting (ADD means association of Terriermen). By the past it was a kind of championship. Nowadays it's an annual meeting between badger's hunters. Some judges look at the way we hunt and the work of our dogs (three dogs / team). The aim isn't to catch faster nor to catch a lot of animals. The aim is to hunt the right way, traditional spirit, respect of the dog, respect of the quarry. I'll try to report here. There'll
  14. The use of the horn is a strong tradition in french venerie (hunting with dogs). Each animal has his own hunting fanfare, each hunting action has his own hunting fanfare. Some great places, villages, forests have their fanfare, some men or women have a fanfare. A good "sonneur" is able to know few hundred of fanfares. They can tell a story or describe the hunt with the succession of fanfares. Examples : débuché (the animal leaves forest for field), rembuché (it leaves field for forest), passer l'eau en barque (you have to take a boat to cross a river or lake), l'hallali sur pieds (the en
  15. The vet's daughter had improved ass by liposuction, she has 10 piercings, breast implants and large tattoos. Where are certifcats from the cosmetic surgeon ?
  16. 12 inches isn't so small for a working terrier. I have 8 working dogs in the kennel, 4 under 12 inches. The bitch below's less than 10, under 4,5 kg. Very usefull on badgers. But I use stronger dogs too, under 15 inches. They are slower in the tunnel but they can easily be dominant with badgers. My rule : Little badgers, little dogs because young badgers can be faster than dogs. In sand, little dogs because the dogs have to join the badger quickly and closer otherwise badger will dig. Strong badgers, stronger dogs. In hard grounds, stronger dogs because the work is longer and dogs has to
  17. According to me, qualities and weaknesses depend more from line than from race. I owned and used both, patterdales and jagds, on earth and underground. Both are very good dogs. Jagd works speedy, with more voice. They give voice on scent easily. Some lines are easy to educate (german way). But the great part of european lines have too bite to work underground. Too much killers for me Patterdales are great workers, strong and tenacious. Better in huge dens if they have to work alone during 4 or 5 hours. Sometimes, patterdales have weak voice. The patterdale mental is better, concen
  18. Very good hunting season. Healthy badgers, dogs are workers, good guys. Some little dens and few huge terriers. Happy. We have done 22 hunt days since the beginning of the season. We'll go 5 days more in september, 3 or 4 days during the winter and the end at the 15th of january.

  21. 10 outside, one teckel, 4 patterdale and 5 jack russell. In my area it's cold. Sometimes - 10 or -15 °C, no problem if they have a place dry without wind.
