  1. Regarding using spaniels ive used them, great in cover and to mark, but very inclined to dig with excitement and would never come near a good terrier reading whats going on underground, surely thats part of the enjoyment of the game. But it has to be admitted they can be hardmouthed. That said you must have a line with good temperment, not hard headed.
  2. He very promising much like his grandad. Three of the litter very promising, one useless but this lad looks something else over the moon with him a joy to watch.
  3. Do you reckon the lurcher is a better marking dog Darbo? as just a marking dog very hard to say. my beddy is a good marking dog seen other good terriers mark even mongrels. saw some good collie and beddy lurchers mark and other lurcher types. too difficult a question for me im afraid. if i was pushed to say the best i have personaly seen first class marker mark laid up ferrets on kills a dog that really didnt miss a trick was a russel dog from the late 80s onwards and unfortunatly he didnt belong to me. but this is just from my own experiences. Yeah i just prefer the terrier ,mainly cause i

  5. Surprised at an ex gamekeeper advising you to ferret them months buddy, you can try it but you will be digging alot to nests of young, and the ferret moving all over the warren killing
  6. I wudn leave the yard without my terrier, he can hunt tight hedges and when he marks he will just lye down at the burrow and be silent, i usally let him run the warren as thats part of the enjoyment for me. If i want him to come away from the warren he will so on command.
  7. looking for a very large jill if anyone has one in Ireland.
  8. Lovely looking boy that fella, wouldnt mind him in my yard.
  9. I think your bang on there brimmer, terrain can dictate what type of ferreting done. it would take me ages to net up the hedges where i hunt, hence the reason i never use purse nets. Terrier marks in with the large buck 2-3ft digs normally and mostly only one dig to the bunny and on ya go. Couldnt ferret this way on sandy deep burrows.
  10. I cover mine with a sock or two in icy weather
  11. If your sick of digging to him, i think i have the answer. Dont use him, give him to someone who will.
  12. Bring one of them so you can get a definite mark and hold him up. I let my terrier run the burrows so i would usally use a good strong buck who can put more pressure on the rabbit to bolt, even thou my terrier is quiet bunnies will know his there. Down side to this ferreting is if you like your terrier running the burrows and you use a big buck you will have to dig more to kills. But if you just want to bolt i suggest you hold up that digging terrier and use jills. Happy hunting.
  13. maybe with tour terrier digging its making the rabbits less likely to bolt.
  14. Your best go out with someone with experience, as stated they may not be going down deep enough, and by going out with someone with a good marking dog, you will soon see how valuable such a dog is.
  15. Has anyone seen the forecast for friday heavy snow forecast. Love getting out to hunt in it ,but all the rabbits seem to be on the uplands here this year dont know how the hell im going to manage to get up there. Can anyone help need a break from the misses ha.
  16. Sleet, snow or heavy frost, but rain is a no-no for me.
  17. Id say you got it in one there Jamie, my guess too.
  18. Well now that would have been a bit irish alrite ha.
  19. Not sure how deep in they where but i can only think with the dog on there heels, fright drove them to ground why they didnt take flight, possibly at this time of the year they heard a shot or two.Weather was good.
  20. Never used a net, either dig to a kill or let the lurcher clean up.
  21. Yeah ive seen cats bolt and dug to a fox in a rabbit warren where i taught the ferret had killed, lucky i didnt get my hand ripped off.
  22. Was out ferreting last weekend and the terrier took a strong hunt down a hedge and marked a burrow, through the buck in and within seconds i was ducking and diving with the fright ha, boy did me hunting mate laugh, not one but two hen pheasant bolted out of the burrow straight at me. Tell me now lads anyone experience this or something similar, im rabbiting thirty odd years and its a first for me.
  23. Try saturating the shavings in the litter tray with water for a few days or so,there less keen to play in the wet shavings. i had the same problem so i made the hole end of the hutch into a litter tray, that way each corner is covered. worth a try and makes cleaning out much easier.
  24. I could be wrong lads, but i find the finer sawdust more absorbent in the litter tray.
