Ill put a few holes in the back so the air can flow through, but even though it didn't feel too warm, it is still early season. Going to build my own box eventually, think ill go with one or two big meshed holes.

When i was a boy, my mum didn't want me taking my 'pet' ferret hunting. But i went ahead behind her back. Just layed him down and followed him. He sniffed out and caught all sorts of small creatures. Maybe not as much fun for adults, but im sure ferrets could have more uses. That is pretty much what I was thinking of, what were you catching? Alot of field voles, from long grass and places where i lifted logs etc. Rats, mice, frogs. Used to put him down single holes with a harness and lead then pull him out with a rabbit attached. He caught a pheasant from under some stacked corrug

Teaching your mink to cache really caught my attention. But i feel that even though you could teach a ferret to cache in a carrier, they would still be content with the hole they caught it in, why move it?

From what i know ferrets don't pant. But the kit is always sticking her tongue out the holes in the ferret box and breathing rapidly.... sounds like shes sniffing rapidly. Wasn't too hot today either and my other jill doesn't seem to be overheating. I switch them into the well ventilated cat carrier when i see her doing it but i wonder if shes just messing around.... trying to taste the air outside or something?

Went to look at another permission today, was still very overgrown but caught two rabbits in the short time we were there. Its not a place for purse nets. I have a 100 yard long net in the post (hopefully) plus a farmer is maybe going to give me one (Not sure how long). The hedgerows are full of thorns and most of them have a fence either side... maybe six-seven foot apart. Would I want to have a big long net either side and a few 8 foot long nets through the hedge where i can? The rabbit that got away today just ran down the hedge so i need something in there. Would mean buying some gate

I usually peek round the curtains from my bed before i make any decisions

Im sure the Mk3 does a double beep for two ferrets too, only had it a few months though.

I've been wanting to buy a long net for a while now but was never sure of what to get exactly. Will be doing hedgerows soon... fence either side of the hedge So id maybe want two long nets and one or two gate nets for between the fences Anyway, for now i've bought a second hand 100 yard quick set for under 50 quid.... should give me something to play with and learn from. But I could maybe do with another before i start these hedgerows. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Longnet-And-Quickset-Basket-/281175909171?nma=true&si=vEOsgfyNEww1nHJ4vdoLplGuHik%253D&orig_cvip=true&rt=nc&_trk

They scratch at the plastic bars on my carrier, but i've never been worried about them getting out.

For the peace of mind, knowing where my ferrets are, it's worth it. Recently added bells to the mix too. Snagging on nets and slipping off can be pain, just got to have them on very tight. But overall it was a good buy, despite the high price.

Thought i'd finish up ferreting the hill on Saturday. Assuming rabbits generally use the same warrens i was expecting to bolt three or four... after having lost them on a previous day. The kit hadn't shown much interest in the rabbits the weekend previous, so i removed the food from the cage about eight o'clock the night before, in the hopes she would at least want to try and eat the rabbits Picked up my ferreting partner and got to the farm about ten. While we were having our coffees the farmer came over and asked us if we would take a look around the lower flat fields. The rabb

She did well today bolted three and ragged them after. Hope to put a post in the report section later.

Thanks guys. Haha, these things are on the list, dog would be stuck in my little flat alone for hours each day, wouldn't be fair, if/when circumstances change ill most likely get one. Found that spade when waiting for my ferret the first time it killed in Its done the job so far, but with it being so long, a hole three foot or more needs to be very wide. Recently bought new purse nets, a cleaver and a rucksack. Ill make sure a long net is in the next batch of ferreting goods

My jill was like that during her first season, she was genrally a bit of a bitch when she was young and when out ferreting she would be hissing and trying to bite. This year she's calmed down, realises a rabbits dead and leaves it, understands I pick her up to show her where the holes are etc.

Technically it's still a picture, a 'gif', ten pictures as a slide show. I just googled 'create gif' and the top page let me do it. Once created it gives you links just like a picture. Yeah him and his sister have been great workers since the first day out. He's castrated but I've kept the jill in tact, fancy keeping a line from her in the future.

First Proper Trip Out With The Ferrets
GreyRake replied to rabbitcatcher 1's topic in Ferrets & Ferreting
Good first day! I'm a fan of the thunder too -
Wrapping my nets with the draw cord now, trouble was the cord on my nylons was quite short in comparison to my new nets. Thought i'd add a few more pictures from that hillside. Taken all i can from there now and without a marking dog ill be netting too many empty warrens. Theres three rabbits that gave me the slip out of a forty hole warren so ill be going back for them this weekend then moving onto another permission. This photo was taken half way down a warren packing at least two hundred holes. I have just under fifty nets but luckily all the networks were not joined so we moved th

Carpet shops happily give away the inner tubes the carpets are rolled on. Saves them money. I just saw them up into different lengths. If they get wet or dirty I just throw them away and get more. Shops just a minute away from me though.

Good pictures

Think I'll take the food out the hutch the evening before I take her next. Once she's had a taste for the action I'm sure she will start getting stuck in.
-
Looks better for me this year compared to last.

I did shake it about once it was dead, the ferrets don't seem to know the difference, they still savage it. But the kit just wasn't interested, walked away.
-
Well she's had a little taste for it now so I'll leave it another month or so then try again. On the upside she didn't skulk which was a pleasant surprise. My hobs gotten skilled at killing in so was hoping she could start filling in for him. My older jill can do a days work solo anyway.

Took the kit out with me today to give her a go. Six months old. Tried her down a six holer, she didn't show for a few minutes then surfaced. Put my older jill down and the thunder started, she killed a big buck that we had to dig out. Tried to goad and play with the kit using the rabbit but she just wasn't interested, just wandered off seems odd she didn't show any interest at all. My older jill was a legend on her first trip out. Maybe thats given me high expectations. Is this fairly normal?
