Almost any kinds of raw meat -pheasant, pigeon, squirrel etc. From the supermarket - mince, chicken, fish etc.

Sorry for double posting, missed your last bit, maybe she was in dead sleep? Mine don't do it but Ive herd alot of ferrets can have trouble waking up.
-
Search up ' insulinoma ' see if the symptoms match. Don't know much about it other than it's quite common in older ferrets and you can try giving them a bit of honey for sugar and an egg for protein to try and perk them up. I think insulinomas sort of like diabetes for ferrets.

If your using t shirts and jumpers it's best to cut them up into little peices, kits can get lost inside it otherwise.

My vet claims the jill jab can last a year. Was news to me though, i thought it just brought them out of heat but they could still come back into heat after perhaps theres a new jab out or something.

I think the ingredients in P@H has changed, 2011. Your not wrong though, it wasn't the best feed at the time and the packaging also compared ferrets to rodents in that the teeth need to be kept short. This was also rectified in 2011.
-
Yeah selectives quite expensive. Only herd good things about P@H nuggets, I'd put it on par with JWB, just cheaper, and doesn't stain teeth like JWB is said to. Top end quality is things like selective and vitalin, but you do pay for it. Middle would be JWB and P@H Chudleys is cheap but has poor ratings.
-
Maybe not as cheap as Joes suggestions but pets at homes nuggets has reasonably good ratings and isn't too costly, about 7 pound for 2kg, gets cheaper the more you buy. My two wont eat more than 2kg in a month. Personally i buy loads of brands and just give them a mix to keep it interesting.

Castrated Hob Available Here To Use In Sw Devon
GreyRake replied to Shamo's topic in Ferrets & Ferreting
You mean a vasectomised hob? A castrated hob (usually) wont even have the urge to try I think it is just the physical mating that brings a jill out. Not any chemicals involved. I believe they stay locked together for quite a while. A vasectomised hob still has his balls, just he has had the tubes connecting them to his nob snipped. His balls still make him horny and smelly... just he cant finish the job. Castrated hobs have the balls completely removed, which in turn removes his sex drive and hormones. Ive herd of castrated hobs dragging in season jills around but not knowing what to do n -

Black eyed white. Just a very white silver. Not as common as albinos and polecats but certainly still plenty about.

Haha, dont say that! If/when im keeping ferrets outside again i think id go for a coop. Might have to make a few adjustments to it but im sure it will do the job! Came across this thread on another forum, Theyve made a base but it will be ok on hard ground. Doesnt need filled as much as they have though haha. http://www.ferretsforum.co.uk/forum/showthread.php?tid=23225

Good to hear. When my job had a limp he was ok after two days. I just limited his cage space and time out of cage for a day to force him to rest.
-
My hob had a slight limp for a day or two, but wasn't as serious as yours sounds, he still used the leg a bit. If you wind her up and get her excited will she bounce around on it all? Like the one said would be a good idea to check nails, long nails will hurt the feet. Could also maybe be a thorn or something? Give the leg a close look over, in-between all the toes and foot pads.

I agree with The One, she does look quite old. Castrated males can still have the horn for four weeks after the op, sometimes even six. Orange/reddish scab looking things could be flea bite marks, fleas can also cause ferrets to have allergies that cause itching and hair loss. Although it would be strange the other ferrets aren't showing signs. Wet some toilet paper and touch it onto the scabs, if the orange/red colour spreads onto the paper then there's a good chance its fleas. If it doesn't then you could rule that out.

Just keep doing what your doing. Posting on forums etc. It is kit season so I'm sure you will come across some. Got my current two following an ad on Gumtree, was a fair drive to get them but was worth it, good working line as stated in the ad.
-
I prefer lighter for working, at least a white head/big mask, easier to spot. Like a classic polecat coloration otherwise just for looks.

True, the time we had to wait for the ferret, it was in a hole under a hedge in a steep mound, i would not have wanted to dig it. But i must have checked around for other holes/ the ferret every five minutes whilst waiting hours, the peace of mind would have been good. Can afford one and ive got until September or later to buy one. Keeping an eye on that other thread about someone planning on making a batch of Mk1 copies. Got until September or later to see if i can find a good deal. Could populate a PCB myself if i had one to copy. But then id be stuck at the plastic case/cover.

Don't think you would need to bother to be honest, if you got something like that coop, they would be fine having the indoor area available, assuming they had lots of bedding. They are hardy creatures. Looking at that particular coop, id investigate that window on the door, might want to cover that for the winter. If the indoor space is quite big you could always put in nest boxes and other types of small enclosed beds for them, to make sure they can get warm when they need to. Plus with you getting two, they will be happy curled up together. Also keep in mind it would need to be on a hard

Some ideas for you - Picture of the indoor cage i built. For it to be outside you want less mesh and more wood to keep the weather out. I got the wood and mesh from B&Q (Bit over priced tbh) Ideas i like for outside.... Chicken coops are cheap and look good, there's various sizes on eBay - http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/LARGE-DELUXE-CHICKEN-COOP-HEN-POULTRY-ARK-HOUSE-HUTCH-/121105040916?pt=UK_Pet_Supplies_Small_Animals&hash=item1c326c4614 If you were worried about the weather then some tarp over the side-top would help, or - http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/WIND-RA

For the housing they will need a smaller enclosed area to sleep in and a larger space open for fresh air to excersie/eat/drink and poop in. Bigger the better! Think of a classic rabbit hutch but bigger. Perhaps with multiple floors and/or with a run attached. For food like the guys have said, ferret kibble and raw meat. There's lots of kibble makes. Can find them local at pet shops, country stores or order online. I feed them kibble (available at all times) rabbits from ferreting ( gutted and skinned because I keep them indoors, don't like carcases dragged everywhere) cheap mince, chicken

Yeah I had to wait a few hours for one of my ferrets at the end of the season. Decided that would be the last without a locator. Had been taking other precautions like sticking to shallow looking, less than ten holers and double checking all around for holes and I never entered a ferret after 1pm incase I had to wait.

Thanks for the replies guys. That long net carrier/setting kit looks good, I'd just be worried about having so much more to carry. Some of my permissions I'm never far away from the car but others I'm trekking far away over the hills, so would be more inclined to get a long net as small as I could but with it still big enough to be useful. Seen a video on YouTube of a guy ferreting hedges, he put a wooden board in the hedge to divert the rabbits out into the field beside for the long nets and dog, would save alot of hassle on a few of my best spots. I do have a friend that came out a f

Locator is defiantly on the cards. Last season was my first ferreting as an adult and alone. Didn't want to invest too much until I was sure I was going to make the most of it. But caught the bug so really want to go for it next season. My ferrets are very valued. Mainly stuck to small warrens, but got some big warrens on waiting for me on some permissions for after the summer. Another thing I want to get is a long net but not sure what to buy exactly. Don't fancy one of these big carry 'quickset' set ups with a really long net. Just something smallish to carry about and come in handy wher

Was looking at ferret finders, need to get one at some point over the summer. Ive never used one and have read people prefer the Mk1s? Why is this? Also do you guys buy a collar for every ferret your using? Or can you safely expect all the ferrets in the burrow to lay up at the same caught rabbit? Not that i cant afford a finder, I'm just grudging these prices, especially as i work with PCBs and know how cheap they are. Also 60 odd for each collar alone seems steep. The second hand finders Ive came across are not much cheaper and always seem to have something wrong with them, so i guess ill ju
