  1. Lets get it right Unfit, that cross in the Countrymans is probably bred just to make a buck, as anything with Poodle in it these days is fetching good money. Now as for Standard Poodle crosses, true Poodles are a gun dog breed and in France, they are worked effectivley still BUT 99.9% of them over here are bred just for the show bench and lets face it, Poodles have been one of the most popular and long serving canine show ponies. In other words, for the production of decent servicable Lurchers.... Shite! If someone was looking for a gun dog cross we have plenty here that are not show tai
  2. Fine animal Dan Would you not shave him down or strip him out in the summer to combat the heat?
  3. Would anyone on her know of an old line of dogs that come from the Welsh/Shropshire borders. That are reputed to be tidy allrounders. A bloke called Shropshirebull off here put a bitch up for sale about 18months back, saying it was one of these, nice old type and i've heared off others that they do exist, any more info to these dogs would be interesting, who keeps 'em going and why?
  4. Blacktabs, you mentioned that old stuff you still keep a line too, Bodger's stuff, you said, would that be Bodger Quimby as that sounds like a name I remember from the past, though I might be wrong or confused? Either way, it would be interesting to know more about 'em if poss. I'm sure I read somewhere that Plummer's old stuff came down from J.Arigho's original stuff, all gypsy bred, would that be off Bodger?
  5. anyone in the right mind wouldnt get a 50/50 bull cross for bunnys and hares, , but a 1/4bull 3/4 grey is a diffrent matter, like anything some good, , alot more bad uns in what ever type of dog you get, , , why cant people just accept horses for courses and all that, some people on hear just like to argue, Folk have always been telling me i'm not of sound mind....Now I know
  6. Good post Ray , think i've trod a similar path regarding the different crosses I've kept, i'll never decry the collie x, owned and seen enough good 'uns to know whats what, as you said, good and bad in all crosses but some feckers on here just get my back up, making sweeping statements without any knowlage or fact. Just read that idiots thred on his 8mnth old pup, standing there in his glowing white trainers and posting about dropped rabbits , nice lookin pup too, shame about the 'creetin' holding its lead!
  7. Ha! your so right Johnbhoy, that half cross bitch to the left couldn't catch a rabbit in a phone box!
  8. I'd say a fair bit taller too Jay, lookin well, the little chap is lookin well
  9. Whin, to add to the thred you don't have to post any pics. It was/is just a thred about old lines/strains/familys of dogs and they don't have to of come off anyone 'famous' either, just honest write up's about honest dogs.
  10. If I was in the market for such an animal, then these would be the very ticket, nice to see more than a drop of Border in 'em, look a crackin litter too Warren, best of luck with the sale.
  11. Very sad news mate, just lost a promising young bitch myself, two weeks back. It's a sickener but onwards and upwards eh!
  12. Great stuff Breeze, crackin photos and an honest account, good to see.
  13. I'm with him But a great write up on a great occasion, cheers for sharing Migmog
  14. When in doubt..... Greyhound, every time.....You cant go wrong there !
  15. Would that mean you were a WW2 greatcoat tied with string and hobnails to go with your little Beddy cross? I do remember one hunter of note wearing a pure white suit to the countryside march, i know it was London but the other million or so were mostley in green, couldn't tell if he was trying to look like a member of 'Shalimar' or 'Randal & Hopkirk (deceased)', eh Chalks
  16. I have seen one in the flesh and they are a credit to him.Definately would be my choice of lurcher for allround work.atb dell They sound interesting Moonlighter, as do all the posts on here, thanks for the replies, will be really good to hear more
  17. Interesting stuff Blacktabs, from what i've read when he got his 'Merle' dog it sounded the end of that line he kept, shame too, as by the sounds of it the only thing the old stuff couldn't do was make the money the collie stuff could, when him and Hancock started a 'Dynasty' There was a dog in Liverpool bred directly out of Woolybear (Merle x Fathom) in the early 's, Sonny was its name, big ugly brute, had one hell of a reputation, good all round grafter and iron hard, nasty with it too, got out once and killed a Doberman in a local shopping area!
  18. I'm sure Dox will reply himself Artic, though you'll find all you need to know in his book, a crackin read
  19. Sniper, was that a rangey wheaten coloured dog, a real beauty and if so how long ago? The reason I ask is that a Douglas bred dog was in the Ormskirk area about 20 odd years back, used to see a bloke with it regular on my way to work, walking down Holborn hill, he was always trying to hide (unsuccessfully!) a hare or two. Never did stop to talk dogs, he always looked like he'd bolt if a car pulled up and I was always late! But I did find out the dogs breeding from a mate in the town.
  20. With many Lurchers topics on this forum, we read about the 'merits' of many Bull & Saluki lines, if line, or strain are the right words to use, 'family' might be more appropriate for some, so I was wondering.... Being in this game for a bit, many of the older books, magazines and even advertisements would always mention dogs of ansestry that had stood the test of time, dogs that had come from generations of 'similar producing' dogs. Minshaw (no controversey please!) and Burrell bred stuff is mentioned a bit and if your fan or foe, both have been around for enough years. Hancock is
  21. Long live the peddlars (I'm in the market for a new mutt )
  22. I wouldn't have put it the same way but i'll second all of that. The saying is, line breeding is when it goes right, inbreeding is when it goes wrong! Some of the best lines of working dogs come off the tightest of breeding and i'd rather take that gamble than be using a dog that is not quite up to standard. If their aint nothing bad in the parents then nothing bad should come out in the pups! I'd put money down that with the various crosses that make up a Lurcher putting close dogs together would be by the slightest chance detrimental to the pups, though the chances of it happenin
