I've seen one too and yes, it was a handy little dog, bit snipe headed for me but it grafted underground and was a crackin ratter BUT.... One Swallow doesn't make a summer! Why breed the litter? Is your Russell a worker? Is the Fox terrier a worker? If either arn't, and a worker is required, there are enough advertised, on here for starters. Breeding from tried and tested stock can be tricky enough to produce decent dogs for 'real' terrier work. What of the rest of the litter, can you find decent homes for 'em, would you advertise them as working dogs? If your mi

Is this the Chirk show mate? It's the one we went to last year SS, with that crappy lurcher judge! Really enjoyed the day.

Deerhound crosses were used predominantly as coursing dogs pre Saluki, with good results too I belive. Though like everything else the stock had to be right to do the job. I worked with an old boy in the early 's who bred and ran this cross with Nuttall of Clitheroe (mentioned in Plummers book Rogues & Running Dogs) in the 60's, to them it was all about good foundation stock to produce dogs that would consitantly kill hares (and I wish i'd have paid more attention as to what they used!). They travelled to run their dogs, though Altcar estate was the most favoured ground as Jim, the

Ahh, back in his youth...... Ain't lookin quite the same these day's!!

Did'nt reply last night cos i went to bed (ran out of cider, lol) Always interested to hear about terrier history, not interested if it involves slagging people though. Not saying that you would do that pal. Foxfan after a lot of thought ive decided i cant risk offending my friends, afterall if they wanted publicity they could write a book[wish they would]when i speak to the man involved i will ask if he would be ok with a basic version of events being told. For now all i can say is,the original dogs Plummer brought up north were a mix of unknown breeding, definatly Russell t

That's you and me both then My Mrs has been banging on about a ladies Barbour for over twelve months but i''m fecked if i'm paying the price so she can ponce round a show in one!

As far as i'm concerned it's well worth buying (or obtaining) as a point in the right direction, especially for someone who is starting with their first lurcher. Regardles of whether D.S. owns a lamp or has average catching lurchers, so fecking what anyway! The dvd is informative and i'm sure can and will help any novice to running dogs.

That's a real shame Jembo, I hope he makes a speedy and full recovery. Best of luck.

Let's face it Lurchers come in all shapes and sizes and different owners prefer different types, it's the same for the judges. It would be better if a judge picked the most true to type and the most capable in every class but alas, it never works out like that, something will/does take the judges eye, usually his type, it's only natural. From what i've seen over the past few years judges are getting better, especially with Bull classes, though i'll bet back when bullx's were a rarety, owners of most genuine first cross types, especially collie's, had the same axe to grind. I've bee

Would agree Wilf but somehow i'm getting drawn back to wanting a Barbour again, I miss my old Solway, recon it's my age! Like with everything else I moved on to the 'new' hybrid Gor-Tex's but nowt fits and feels like a well worn and waxed Barbour, my old one was like fecking leather. Like an old friend that coat was. almost felt part of me. As for the kecks, i'd go for the Ram everytime, some serious 'Betty Swallocks' in the Montana!

Cracker!

Ha ha, I recon everyone who lamps regular has done that once Undisputed, I certainly have, then we learn from it eh! Lamping one night, had a mate who took off after the dogs as they put a fox into a small bramble next to a big wall, he got too close, the dogs went in, fox bolted, he spun to follow it with the beam and BANG, did a triple salko as two dogs charged out and hit him from behind, smashing his head on a rock and fracturing his skull, thought we were gonna loose him on the jurney to the hospital and with him rushed in we had to explain ourselves to the police, who took a very di

I've worn/used Fell Boot's and.... er, they are an 'aquired taste', so to speak. If your looking at a getting pair, they would take a bit of getting used to but if your in 'em a few times a week the'd be fine, fell huntsmen practically live in 'em. I think it'd be unlikely that any old cobbler still makes them now, you'd have to buy the factory ones. Years ago I was recommended a cobbler by a bloke whilst up in the Lakes Fell Hunting. I found the old shop, down a tiny side road in Ambelside, as I needed a new 'hook eyelett' fitted to my then crappy walking boots, after i'd torn o

A grand tale of a grand breed.... -
Suppose I've had a few weird encounters but the one that sticks..... Bout 20 years ago, out shining a huge nature reserve thats teaming with bunnys. A place for numbers that i'd always lamped, mostley on my own. So, a good hour in and plenty in the bag I had to cross through a large pine wood to get to the fields on the other side. Put the dog on slip, as I didn't want him chasing bunnys through the trees and found the stump that would lead me right through without using the lamp. About halfway and I felt, through the lead, my old dog stiffen and turn across me to my right, fox, I thoug

Now that is a cross to bust a bush!!! They sound just the ticket John, and look in fantastic nick, wish I was in the market, a credit to you, best of luck with the sale

:clapper: @ Wink Hound Lurcherlad, those dogs look very handy critters, fair play to you. I'd be the last to deny what virtues a Foxhound, Harrier etc could/would bring to a working lurcher BUT lets stick to genuine first cross stuff here and look at the other side. If you bred a litter and you happen on a silent one and you have a few mates who may take a couple more, even if they sing. What of the rest....? Sell 'em on, only to find out their new owner can't stand the noise, let alone the farmer who's land he's sneekin on and to top that, as Winky so eliquently put it, they hit a l

Aye, best of luck with it. Though, as above, I think the main reason as to why this cross has never been popular is simple...... Noise!!! to tell you the truth thats whats holding me back i dont want a opera singer out lamping but i think if they dont carry the noise then they should be handy, good stamina, good feet and strong built too, but i have a few people that will hold a couple each so i hope atleast a couple of them dont sound on the chase Dead right Fenman, stamina, good feet and tough build are all admirable qualitys to have BUT for a lamping (dare I say poaching lurc

Could be just about anything, it's better to know whats in a terrier as far back as you can go but as said before, if it grafts and grafts well and has proven itself over time, then..... Why not! Sealyham blood 'could' be a possiblity but the only ones I know that were workers were (maybe still are?) bred by MR and CR about 20 years since in the NE and they kept them very close. Wheaton is growing ever more popular but if the type goes back a few years it would become less likely, as lads who kept 'em, kept 'em close. Before the White Lakey explosion in the mid 's, Bedlingtons were

Paul Blackledge, not a man to cross back in the day! He kept a decent line of terriers, out of his main dog 'McCoy', (or The Real Mcoy to give it it's full title) There's a fictional book that 'mentions' him a bit, 'The Sett' by Ranolfe Fiennes (spelling). It seems a real shame to read posts like that one SJM from other sites, with a bloke who comes across a decent sort, being 'forced' into competition against people i'm sure he would be at ease with, by an egotistical spouse.
