  1. Would your bedlingtons have been more of a challenge if you had not had lurchers first? I think most lads make mistakes with their first lurcher or gundog for that matter, but they learn from that and when they progress onto their next dog they don't repeat their mistakes. Just out of interest, what strain are your bedlingtons? Would they be able to find an injured fox?
  2. Size nine boot is useless except for whippets. Anything bigger -size twelve boots and a thick stick. I'm only joking!
  3. If I was a day old pup i'd rather take my chances than be drowned in a bucket. I accept a lot of lurchers get poorly trained and, as a consequence are passed around. A lot of people seem to get upset at the thought of that, but that's more to do with their beliefs about bonding with dogs and the slogan ' a dog is for life not just for Christmas' etc. I think the average dog just wants grub, exercise and a dry place to sleep. If that means a rehoming kennel, it doesn't make much difference to the average lurcher. Saturated collie and saluki types might get stressed out, but stressed out is bett
  4. You're right, he should have told his bitch precisely the number of pups to produce, and the sire of the pups to go easy on the semen.
  5. well it's judge Judy time and like the rest of the thl coven of witches I'll give you the benefit of my valuable opinion. The lad has held his hand up and says he's struggling. We all make mistakes. If his wife is anything like mine he's stressed out bigtime. A litter of pups are great fun until you can't shift them. If he'd shifted the lot some of the thl witches would be calling him a peddler and worse. There'd be a lot of jealousy at his good luck. As it is he didn't cull them. I'm not bothered in the slightest by any amount of blood and guts, but I couldn't cull a pup. I just couldn't do
  6. It' easy to be wise after the event, hindsight and all that. It's a bad time of year to shift pups as well. Spring and summer are better times. Hope your luck changes and you get good working homes for them.
  7. Get him used to the idea of returning to you on command. Start him in an enclosed space, a garden or small field-even your living room.Once he's got the idea that returning will result in a treat and praise, you are half way there. However there will come a point when he decides to ignore you. At that precise moment run towards him and bollock him. chances are he'll be really surprised and will fawn all over you. It's easier to use a whistle because the whistle tone is immediate and is always the same tone. Get into his head whistle means return and praise/reward. Ignoring the whistle means a
  8. Recall is one of the most important attributes in a lurcher. I train mine to a whistle. Plenty of praise when they return, plenty of bollockings when they ignore you. I do this from 12 weeks old. By the time they are ready to run it's ingrained in them and they actually get a bang out of returning because they know I'm going to praise them. In your case it's going to be more difficult because of the dog's age. You were probably sold the dog because it hunted up, but weren't told this by the seller. You say the dog is responsive during the day so you should have a reasonable chance of getting
  9. I think a lot of people would have just run it over, but fair play to those lads. Very sporting. Scots tend to be like that.

  11. It's got to be gsd/greyhound. Have you lost touch with the breeder? It would be interesting to see what your dogs littermates turned out like.
  12. I'm convinced the average dog has a better, more natural diet than the average kid. How many of us allow our kids to eat total teeth rotting shite but wouldn't allow our dogs to eat the same things? It's weird. How much protein does a kid need? Fecked if i know.
  13. Asprin and ibuprofen can cause stomach ulcers in dogs. Best avoided.
  14. http://photography.nationalgeographic.co.uk/photography/photo-of-the-day/fennec-fox-morocco/ Here's mine. Listens for mice and jumps, kills and carries them.
  15. No not a dingo, a Fennec fox. It doesn't matter what they look like, it's whether they do the job.
  16. Stick a picture up of the sire mate. How tall are the sire and dam?
  17. He's big, he's bald but er-he ain't beautiful. Thought I'd get back to THL basics.
  18. I see that Hancock is producing a lot of this cross now. What is the theory behind having the two collie types in the breeding? Has anybody got one that's working? How do they differ from a straight border cross? NOT looking for a slanging match. Genuine question.
  19. Much obliged for the advice. I'll get them up on blocks. Cheers
  20. When I say they are kennels, I mean sheds. They are too big to lift. They are raised off the floor but only on wooden struts. Any way I can get round the problem without lifting?
  21. I've just been putting wood preservative on my kennels. I noticed that on both of them the plank nearest to the ground is really wet. It's penetrated into the inside of the kennel. Not good. How can I remedy the problem?
  22. That's a bit of an empty statement.
