That's great hunting Great account and fantastic pics . Your hounds are cracking and look well keen. All the best , enjoy your summer you certainly sound like you deserve it.

Good luck everyone Hope your teams do you proud this weekend. Scotland will have to play some to beat the Italians . They were so bad last year my young lad got the Irish top for his christmas and announced yesterday he was saving all he could to by the welsh top when we go to murrayfield to the welsh game. Win lose or draw enjoy it

Aye They did mate, they loved it. At the end they had a bbq and all the beaters who shot thanked them and the keeper slipped them both £5 so they were 10ft tall !!!

Hi gouldy 257 I ain't the keeper mate just a beater so I don't feed them. I think they are a cross type which suit the weather and the ground. ATB

Keepers Day yesterday I took my kids for the first time beating and decided to leave the gun so I could concentrate on them and the young dog. They both had a brilliant day and can't wait ill next season. We did 7 drives and the ground is pretty steep and rough it also poured with rain all afternoon so they did really well. The dog is only 19 months and this has been her first season beating and she is coming on well. The kids were well proud of her

Hi Ned Just red your thread. You have a amazing sport and amazing dogs . I live on west coast of scotland. I work my labrador for pheasants and on the shore for wild geese and ducks nothing as exciting as boar hunting but have family out in Oz and one day I would love to vist them and take in some boar hunting . Keep posting as your sport is something most people in the UK can only dream of . Cheers Stuart

This is my black lab, Corbie , she is 18months old, this is at work with me in the woods on Mull. I am trying to teach her to stop on the whistle but making slow progress as she just comes straight back to heel . Her recall is good and I heard doing too much stop whistle isn't a good thing. Has anyone got any good tips I could try ??

Brilliant write up and your hounds are crackers

Thats brilliant . I've had my pup beating the last three weeks and helping with picking up but I need to get her out under the geese and ducks on the shore .

Cheers All Glad you liked the pic. There are loads in certain places in the woods. They are amazing as they bring out some people in a genuine cold sweat and real fear , some of the old guys are terrified of them and can tell tales of killing everyone they ever found with their planting spade and real epic battles , :icon_eek: some real legends exist of certain rocky areas that apparently held and hold adders that could bite your leg off !!!!. Great Craic. I like to think they kill plenty mice and rats and as long as you keep the dogs away from them then I just leave them to

Thats brilliant news . Pour your yourself a big dram.

Came on this adder in the woods as it was crossing the path early in the morning. It was bucketing rain and it was obviously still slow with it being so cold and wet . It was raging and hissing like mad, fantastic !!

I think Snipe are bigger with longer bill and rounded tail whereas jack snipe I think are less common, smaller with shorter bill and wedge shaped tail. Let me know if thats right

This fella is always laying up near the loch with only his antlers sticking above the heather . Took a slow walk down and gave a little whistle.

Your right !! Just checked my pics file The second was too out of focus. I do have a third image somewhere that was being pointed with a german short haired pointer but it was in the pouring rain and a bit out of focus but I'll try and find it.

It would have been Oct 2010 , I think the language barrier wasn't helping either and alot was being lost in translation between the locals strong cumbrian and my strongs scots I think the new huntsman had just got going. I had been twice before and it was grand . Once when my lad was really young and we had to watch from the road and the second time had a brilliant day in the pouring rain in Ennerdale when the wife and I kept up and they put one up out the scree high above the lake.

I was taken to see the Linlithgow and Stirlingshire a couple of times as a kid but don't really remember much about it. Seen the Blencathra Followed the Melbreak a couple of times as my OH is from Cockermouth but last time I took my wee laddie and we got the total cold shoulder and unfriendliest of welcomes from all the old boys watching from the road . I don't know if it was because we were scots or not locals and I know they have to be careful with antis but It put my young lad right off which was really disapointing as he now thinks a day out with the hounds is crap and only for gru

Hi I've a couple of mates that go every year and they love it. There are loads of geese and the locals are really friendly. If you go and politely ask I am sure you will get more than you need. My mates did say the locals were getting fed up of Italians and Belgians shooting far far too many and going too close to peoples houses at all hours. Go with the right attitude and hand out a few bottles of malt and you'll likely get invited back next year
-
Glad you liked them. I got close , Just slowly, To be honest these two looked like they had come in on the previous nights full moon and looked pretty tired and with heavy snow everywhere else they were more interested in feeding. I didn't flush them, just got the pics and left them to their worms.
-
This is the second pic . I think the beech woods hold them as less snow gets under them and the deep leaf litter is probobly good feeding
-
This was woodcock I came on in the beech wood a couple of winters ago. They are bonny wee birds with amazing cammoflage. I've got another one somewhere I'll have a look .
-
Woodcock-nice to see them back
greenshank1 replied to tegater's topic in Driven, Walked Up, Rough Shooting
I saw couple in the headlights early last week and two were shot on the local pheasant shoot on saturday . I reckon these are resident birds though and it hasn't been cold enough to force scandinavian birds south into Argyll yet in any real numbers. They are amazing wee birds. One day they are everywhere and the next gone with the wind , a sure sign snow and frost is coming I got few good pics two winters ago I'll dig them out and put them up -
Well Done mate !!. Looks like a great morning and the dog is obviously enjoying himself. It,s been really mild and sunny last few days and geese seem to have moved on but real cold snap forecast end of the week so hopefully will carry more down from the North maybe some woodcock too.

Get a pup I am training my first lab who is now 16 months and its great fun. It is just the same as any terrier, lurcher , whippet, hound, hawk you get out what you put in. There is no short cut to success . If you buy in a young un you are just buying someone's failure
