  1. Bit of Scottish history , one of the main droves came off Skye and they gathered the highland cattle , fitting some with shoes !! before swimming them across the narrows at Kylerhea . They then drove them all the way to market at Crieff (look at a map) . This is an epic walk and would indeed take a certain type of man and dog to deliver on time with cattle and sheep in good condition.Sadly many a drover was hung on the gallows at Crieff as the gulf between highland and lowlander // town and country grew . For every highlander / drover they hung they hammered a iron nail into a few nearby tree
  2. Don't know any millionaires but I am lucky to have a few good mates that share what they hunt , shoot and catch. The grouse were brilliant and kids tried them and enjoyed a bit as well. Although , there ain't much eating on them. Boiled the carcasses today for stock and made broth for tonight's dinner proper , proper dinner fit for a king.
  3. A mate gave me a couple of grouse , so did them with chanterelles from the woods and thyme from herb garden and made my tatties from veg patch into game chips.
  4. Last year was about £27 a kilo. This year is the best year I have ever seen in the woods so if you can get any money for them you are doing well. I picked about three kilos in about fifteen minutes on Friday . I am drying them and keeping for winter there are so many.
  5. Neighbour dropped in a big bag of squat lobsters. Had some of them tonight , they are fantastic with brown bread and butter and the kids love them.
  6. Absolutely brilliant Quality Father and Son time.
  7. Lifted first drill of tatties this morning. Looking like it's going to be a good crop.
  8. Depending on what you want it for there is different places to look. Shooting times online marketplace and Sporting Gun magazine often have gundogs. Ukgundogs online also has dogs for sale and lists of breeders and trainers of spaniels , labs and pointers etc All the best.
  9. Fly fishing along the loch shore. Catching small rock cod on the fly but looking for sea trout.
  10. Stunning pics Cracking place to work and work your dogs. Thanks for sharing
  11. You can put them in omlettes or flans or just fry up as you would with any other mushroom. I have just got a dehumidifier and going to try and dry this lot out and store for winter to then add onto pizza and into soups.
  12. Picked some great chanterelles today.
  13. Cheers terry Reckon I will leave them a bit yet and take the shaws off it the blight appears.
  14. Lovage , curly kale and bacon soup is really nice. After your tatties flower when do you lift them. My mate starts lifting his after 3 weeks from flowering but I thought that was a bit early ?? If this rain keeps up , blight won't be far away . I lifted mine later last year and they were ok but thought I'd check.
  15. For pheasant , we cut the breasts off , wrap in tin foil , drizzle in olive oil , lightly salt and pepper , add finely chopped chorizo and then roughly break off / crumb Stilton over the top. Wrap the parcel give it 20 mins or so and it is amazing.
  16. Thanks for comments . I was fishing Loch Eye. Aye , she was a cracker. Strongest wild brownie I have played. She was a bit thin from spawning and had grazes on her mouth from shifting gravel but she'll soon get back to full fitness. See fly
  17. Caught a nice wild brownie fly fishing yesterday. Few pics and then put him back.
  18. Planted two varieties of tatties , a row of beat root , a row of carrots , half a row of chard . Trying horseradish for the first time this year so will see how that turns out. Planted a new clump of rhubarb and started the new herb garden. Thyme , rosemary , sage , chives , fennel , dill and parsley. We had a fair amount of snow last week so waiting before sowing the lettuce.
  19. To finish Easter hols , took the kids camping on Mull and did a bit sea trout fishing off the rocks with the fly rods. Beautiful and sunny and a Scottish wind that would have cut you in two.
  20. My kids have been keen to set there own creel and catch a lobster. So this week we made up a creel , rope and buoy and have baited it in a likely spot. So far it's only been full of crab but they are loving it , and after two days have got the Lab swimming out and retrieving the rope so they can haul it in.
  21. Thanks guys. Why not Red tarn ? We've got the legs for them , cheers , He is 13 and has a few Munro's under his belt already.
  22. Can anyone recommend good Tarns to fly fish. We are down next week and plan on taking my son up to a few. Thought about Hayeswater and Red Tarn but interested in any others that are worth a cast. I know it's early but he is dead keen . It is just with the fly and will return what we catch so no worries.
  23. Watching the video the dog is frightened of him. Dogs don't learn when they are frightened. Everybody has a different approach to training and his style ain't mine. If you have lost your temper and caused the dog to fear you how do you expect it to learn ? and how do you intend to form a working relationship ? I had lurchers that a raised voice was almost too much for them so had to be quiet and gentle when inside I was actually boiling. My current lab is head strong and driven and I have had to build her training to channel her enthusiasm and character and work hard to get a to w
  24. Ben Vorlich summit in the rain . We had put up a good few coveys on the way up so the lurcher was a bit keen to get back off the top and back down on the heathery slopes. On a clear day though the view is stunning.
  25. Ben Vorlich is my next port of call Lab ..fair play to your buddy,he must be one seriously fit guy!! Ben Vorlich is a cracker. To run it 3 times is an epic. I have done a few times and every time was nearly blown off the top by the wind and rain. I think I might have an old pic of the lurcher on the top in the bucketing rain.
