Thanks for your opinion of me. You won't be surprised your opinion means nothing to me. As for me not knowing what I'm talking about, your the one who looks the fool. Deflect the discussion as much as you want, nothing will change that. Don't play the wounded martyr. Read back over your posts. You started out abusive and sanctimonious and didn't like getting spoke to the same way. Don't try and hide behind your pettycoat and claim that I'm some sort of chauvinist. I've got 2 daughters and a missus, I'm used to losing to women. I'm sure you're the greatest dog handler the world has ever se

25" and under. I personally wouldn't want anything under 27". But I'm set in my ways.

Surely a smaller dog would be able to weave its way around the crop! Lol!

Listen, everyone's been pretty civil. There's a few of us that disagree but it's not got personal. I may not agree with some of the other posters but I respect their opinion. I don't respect yours, not because your a woman, but because you're an idiot who doesn't know what she's talking about and entered the thread being rude and suggested that I was too thick to understand.

Excellent input What would you like me to add, you guys have it all covered from giraffes to Usain Bolt! But since you want my view, here it is. Everything in life has its ideal size for peak performance. You guys have opened the discussion to include anything so I will. Nature has created the fastest animal to be the size it is. Everything has a knock on effect. If an animal is taller it's centre of gravity is higher up its body making it less maneuverable I.e bending. If you can get a tall dog with a low centre of gravity or running style that makes it run lower great. But a smaller dog wi

I only ever slipped if my dog had a chance. I think a lot of people wanted to touch the deer before they let their dog go.

The maize only came down last week around here. Do you think that it's still summer? If a dog couldn't run through crops or cover then it wasn't much use to me.
-
And to be honest, I didn't want your view, I just wanted you to clarify your stupid comment, which you didn't.

The maize only came off last week near me.

Use your gardening skills to point out the manure and correct it.

I think a lot of it depends on where you were in the country. The further south you went the bigger and faster the deer became.

In fairness, although he's deep and wide in the chest, I don't consider him to be overly heavy. When I was young dogs like him were commonplace. I'd give him kennel space.

I never said that taller dogs were better because of crops. Due to their different running styles, deer always had the advantage over dogs in crops or tall grass. Speed was essential. How many times did you watch as a fallow buck straightlined your dogs and wished that your dogs were just that bit faster? There are some that will never be caught and will outpace any dog but even the owners of the fastest dogs wish there was as little bit more speed available to get on terms with them. So I say a bigger, faster dog is better for that reason.
-
I totally agree with you. Comparing the way a big dog turns with a small dog isn't valid. However that doesn't mean a big dog can't turn well. As this thread is about pre ban deer, the ability of a dog to turn through 180 degrees in its own body length was not essential. However, the requirement for a dog to get up to top speed fast and have enough speed to close on a deer that's dropping gears all the time was a pretty important factor. Even a CWD that turns a dog inside out wouldn't evade a big dog unless that dog was a heavyset wanker with no ability to turn.

totally disagree just cause a dog is tall doesn't mean its fast some of the fastest dogs ive seen are around the 26 mark That's why I said, all things being equal. There's going to be 20" dogs that are faster than 27" dogs but they won't be equals. With the greatest respect, you ain't seen enough if they're the fastest dogs you've seen. It comes down to physics. If you've got 2 dogs with exactly the same muscle to bone to weight ratio and the exact same ratio of length to height but one is 24" and one is 28" then the 28" dog will be significantly faster than the 24" one. There's no denying

It's when people trot out the same nonsense time after time and quote the great THL "facts", that it's obvious that they haven't seen stuff. You know the sort of thing, beddy x whippets pulling fallow bucks, deerhound x's not maturing until they are over 4 years old, big dogs turning like buses. I'm sure other people have had big dogs but I question the quality of those dogs when people claim that 25" dogs are quicker and faster. I know a lot of people haven't got the confidence to give a big dog a long slip and maybe never get to see the potential of them.
-
But the Cheetahs leg length to body height ratio and muscle mass is greater than a giraffes and a giraffe has a much higher centre of gravity.

What size dog have you got Bunnys? I've got a 30" dog, we should have a run together and see how we get on and who's dog proves to be the most versatile. We can try some different ground and different conditions. We can even see how they do for speed and quickness. Then we can have a pint afterwards and compare notes.

I think the problem is a lot of people have only seen smaller dogs work because they started working them after the ban. There has been a definite shift towards smaller dogs since the ban and peoples opinions of big dogs are based on rumour and fallacies and not based on first hand experience. Those of us that have always worked larger dogs know what they are capable of and what to expect.
-
Hahahahaha!!! How many times did you go?
-
That's why I said quick and fast. I'm aware of the difference. I'm also aware of the perception of speed and how people think that the manic strides of a small dog are actually faster than the more leisurely stretched out strides of a big dog. This isn't the case. Watch the lurcher racing or simulated coursing at a game fair, you'll be able to see the difference then. As this thread relates to dogs used for pre ban deer, even if a smaller dog could reach 30 yards first, it's a moot point and would be of no benefit to the smaller dog.
