springer dosent like carrying game help!
camokev64 replied to GEOFF.223's topic in Gundogs & Retrievers
Just got settled in after another days soaking, why i took 7 dogs out picking up, when i could of got by with 2 has bugged me today.8 towels later, but all tucked up now in the kennels with the wood burner on,happy days. Right Lab -tastic, I`ve touched on the 8 week start of training in a previous topic. This is the time when most puppies should be coming away from the family group,no sooner. From eight weeks the pup should be in the house getting use to all human social habits of everyday life ( a cage is a very useful thing to have, allowing the pup to condition to a closure situation and w -

Geoff, Without putting water on your fire the dog seems to have touched on a lot of area`s in it`s training but has`nt mastered each category proficiently. The problem is that it`s only going to become more dificult with the age of the dog "You can`t teach an old dog new trick`s" ,YES AT 14 MONTHS.To put things into prospective ( I`ve trialled dogs dogs at this age ).This is why the training has to start at 8 weeks !!! Read the dog. This is the biggest single area were people fail with dogs, the majority of dog handlers in the shooting field fail to be able to tell whether a dog is b -
danw, So it was`nt only my thoughts !!!!! LOL LOL LOL. Rhodey, Not quite as severe at this tender age,but the line of thought is interesting.

Just a tip mate if you want that dog quartering correctly with very little prompting from yourself, get in the bracken yourself and work changing directions in diagonals, prompted if need be.You will see after a while the dog will automatically read your body language. It was apparent that the dog was hunting blank ground, hence his lack of drive, so i would keep the pattern tighter as he seemed to be getting a bit to far in front and he will get even further when he pulls on scent if not reined in. Nice little dog and by his body language looks like this one will switch off when given the comm

How do you keep your dogs energy levels up?
camokev64 replied to stroller's topic in Gundogs & Retrievers
Ha, Well i`d get that conflict of interest sorted first, they need to be singing off the same hymn sheet. If the guy is only working the dog once a week ( and hard ),it`s a bit of a big call for the dog even if the dog is getting long free ranging walks. It`s like all training in life, you can`t beat the real thing to get fit.The pemican bar will help to a degree with the stop start type performance that working dogs come across. But really, the dog ain`t gonna get fit on a lead at home,he just needs to read his dog better and give it a breather if need be. I`d rather have mine keel over -

Ha Lab-Labtastic, I could write a book. £50 an good dinner you would`nt ! Was ok when the keepers and the lords son ran the the day,but when the lord Helli-d in,2 pilots at the ready, all hell broke out ! One skirmish i had was when one of the Lords guests shot a fox in a ravine,of course it was bottle of champagne for the good man who shot it. "he did`nt drag it out by the tail to show everybody ! When the drink was flowing between drives i said to my mate and the keeper, I`m off to find that fox in the ravine, got to the fox lying in the ravine grabbed it`s tail to be met by a set of nas -

Well ftm you follow your gut instinct ha ha ha,you`d probably get that dog ready to trial/sit on flush beating dog when it`s 6, ha ha ha. Dogs have changed so much over the years,Lurchers and Gundogs.I can remember Kit Green in Wigan in the 70`s racing our whippet Greyhounds.Chatting with Plumber in the `s about the prominence of the Collie Lurcher, and qualifying for the Lurcher obedience finals in the nineties with my home bred Lurchers and only this year at a game fair in the north of England a tap on the shoulder from Elwyn Evans himself from the Kelpie cross era,not seen for 20 odd years -

I`m afraid it`s the norm these days,Awful dog handlers with a dog thats got the embarrassment to have to stand next to them, like i`ve said before a dog to a great degree is a reflection of their owners input ! At least you was allowed to get your steam off,you would probably have to suffer in silence at some more formal shoots,i had a similar thing happen at a formal shoot a number of years ago in front of some so called leading figures who represent our country, i did`nt hang back and they got my notice for good measure. Funny how they got on the phone pleading with me a few weeks later whe -

danw, Spot on also, you`ve basically got to work a dog to fitness, the beauty in having a good sized pack of dogs, is that you can hold certain dogs back when picking up .For instance my best 2 dogs (labs) walk to heel in certain picking circumstances while the others hoover up,then when I`ve got a runner 4/5/600 + yards they come into their own !.It`s quite important to me that these dogs stay fresh so that they don`t go off the whistle when being handled hundreds of yards back to the fall of a bird, the majority of tired dogs do go off the whistle albeit not completely. PS, Have a deeks at t -

Paulus, It does make a difference to the dogs general condition over a period of time when you are working dogs seriously, all the crack on the circuit during the picking up season is "i`ve got mine on 23%/24%/25%/26% now",it makes me laugh ! It`s like running an F1 car on a lower rated octane fuel. When my dogs, 5-8, if dogs are in training are let out in the exercise pen i can put the No 2`s from my own dogs in a pint glass !! I even had one bloke on a shoot say to me "do your dogs not eat any of the birds that they are sent to retrieve" I laughed and said " it does`nt seem to be the c -

How do you keep your dogs energy levels up?
camokev64 replied to stroller's topic in Gundogs & Retrievers
Brill Topic, Re-hydration is just as important in dogs as humans, especially when your feeding your dogs on that dried food crap.So when your having that swig of water on the moor make sure "Old Bess" gets even more, even more regularly as she`s just done ten times more work than yourself !!!!!! Prevention is better than cure !!!!!!!. Also Pemican bar is brill for maintaining energy levels,so when you get your picking up/beating money spend a bit on the dogs diet and not all on your own. But to be honest apart from the first 4 weeks of the Grouse and warm weather,i find my dogs fitness lev -
Judging a dogs state of mind or body language even in a email or telephone conversation is probably difficult for alot of us being.reliant on the owner painting a true picture of events, but can be achieved with experience. Regards Trust / pack leader blady blar, you ain`t stating nothing new, alot of people already build on these basic`s with out realizing,The pack leader is certainly not established in the wild dog world with trust ( but they still hunt effectively as a unit, prey drive ),however we have the great benefit of both kidding the dog into doing the right thing and also the abilit

Yes Casso has some informative points albeit obvious.the point in question is differentiating when to apply the correct code of correction in the appropriate circumstance taking age into consideration ( this is why people go for dog lessons because they cannot read dogs body language ).You can read all the dog behaviour books you want and watch all the dvd`s but if you can`t read a dog it`ll all end the same way ! The chap on the original post is not talking about a situation in his own personal space,Yes it`s running passed him but that is down to basic`s not being established( train in con

Very interesting topic ! The last two entries are basically answering two situations that you can encounter in dog training. One thing that has to be established is whether the dog is just plainly ignoring you or is afraid to come into you on the recall,WHICH WILL REQUIRE TWO TOTALLY OPPOSITE APPROACHES TO REMEDY THE FAULT. NB You don`t reward dogs for defiance ! ( especially with food ). From the content of the original post i would say the young dog is "cocking a`deaf`un " ( as in ears ),probably through exercising the dog "OFF" the lead for way to long. Do you see what i am getti

Where are the best springers coming from?
camokev64 replied to deerdogs's topic in Gundogs & Retrievers
I don`t think a trialing chap would ask the question in the first instance, and as to being half way there with a trialing pedigree you could not be more further than the truth ! ""oh it will work alright ! As with most dogs you see on shoots, it will work you in to a straight jacket and a darkened room,if it`s given poor training ! Spend a season or two helping a an established trialing kennels then you will find out if A : You have the dedication to train a dog to an acceptable standard. B : You`ll know then what your looking for in a strain. ATB. -
In need of some tips & hints on retrieving
camokev64 replied to S-dirt's topic in Gundogs & Retrievers
Forget Dummies for now with the dog that is not up to scratch. Without visually assessing the dog myself, the dog appears to be presenting signs of immaturity,so back to the very basic`s for this one. " LEAD ON " sit dog in front of you.call dog towards you, whistle or name, make it sit, mixing the commands, whistle or hand or sit command. Oh and while we are doing this encourage the dog to rest his chin on your out stretched hand and tickle him, thus sowing the seeds for good delivery. ( Under any circumstances NO TREATS ) !!. When dog is doing this perfectly add another lead and then another -
ftm Sounds like you have a dog you are happy with and have achieved all your aims in training, well done ! First and foremost my dogs are for picking up and used to shoot over with a few selected to run in field trials in the season.I pick up on driven shoots and shoot over my dogs on rough shoots, the usual day on a rough shoot while walking up consists of a spaniel quartering in front of me with a couple of Labs walking to heel ( just a replication of my rabbit training days in Northumbria and The Yorkshire dales ) GREAT FOR STEADINESS.I must add that other syndicate members walk in line wi

When treats are used as positive encouragement in dog training the stakes are raised dramatically for the dog to squeak /whine !.Yes a very big no no for gundogs ! ( it is acceptable in the HPR breeds even in trials ).Whether you wean them off at an early age or not you sow the seeds for the dog to expect to be rewarded, hence raising the dogs chances of making noise to prompt the reward. If a dog does not return on the recall whistle,it`s a downfall in the owners basic training, whether the dog is 800 yrds away or 1.Hard hunting dog or not. The dog is a total reflection of its owners train

Let me throw my hat into the ring. If you want your spaniel to do what a spaniel should in a shooting / beating scenario and not what 90 odd % of gundog owners allow their dogs to do,then with DEDICATION you will be able to train your dog to a level that will not cause :you embarrasment ,and more importantly, does not ruin everybody elses shoot day, You will start to train/kid the pup from, YES 8 WEEKS !!.It is absolutely true as the saying goes "THEY WON`T LEARN NOTHING IN THE KENNEL". Yes the training starts as fun, retrieving a must ( more in cockers ) and holding the dog back ( not wit

If you think your dogs health has had a down turn since the visit to the vet ring them and tell them so,Vet surgeries are just like hospitals, laced with bacteria !!! IF I HAVE TO ATTEND THE VET,I ONLY TAKE THE DOG OUT OF THE CAR WHEN I AM CALLED FOR. Regarding booster jabs, dogs will have built up enough antibodies in the immune system by the age of 6 !! BUT is probably worth getting dogs jabbed for Leptospirosis if used for ratting or if you allow your dog to drink from natural water sources !!
