There will be a good article in this weeks shooting times regards the well known genetic health tests in labs regards :PRA,CNM,EIC to name a few,all in the cause for a healthier breed. The crux of the article relates to the kennel club`s compilation of test results and their authenticity, basically there are dogs being used at stud which have failed the DNA tests but some how are down on the kennel club health check site as clear ? I for one realise that we are by-passing dogs with natural game finding ability ( if affected ) to make the breed healther ! What is not good is that a person

Wondering What Your Take On This Method Is
camokev64 replied to Casso's topic in Gundogs & Retrievers
It`s an absolute brilliant angle on dog training of which i endorse already !! For example 1 : at the moment i have a 5 month cocker in training, part of the dogs patience training involves the usual dog sitting with a dummy thrown out,dog sit`s patiently,i walk out pick up dummy then give it the dog upon my return, dog lies on back getting lots of belly rubbing while holding the dummy.NB : This just an extension of my 8 week start training programme in that,ball/sock thrown dog held back in my hands, but then released when dog loses focus on retrieve.NURTURE that patience. And i`ll tell yo -

Ha Ha Ha, Think I`ve seen the same women, when i helped out picking up on a shoot she go`s to !! She keeps asking a women to come and train with us who i`m training a cocker for at the moment..thought she would want to show me how it`s done ? -

Where Are The Long Legged Springers??

DOGS ARE 90% HANDLER 10% DOG, PROVE ME WRONG ! Even with a lottery. -
Hi, a little confused with the topic in that i presume you are kenneling the pups together ! if so put them in with a quite mature dog if you have the facility, the mature dog will know when it is or not his turn for it`s training session and in the whole will give off an air of calm.Failing this just kennel the dogs separately and put radio`s playing classical music etc so the dog does not hear you coming/swapping dogs for example. But as CASSO states nip any noise made on the training field in the bud.TAKE THE DOG OUT THE ROUTINE SITUATION. So basically follow CASSO`s recommendations Stic

Where Are The Long Legged Springers??
camokev64 replied to bullmastiff's topic in Gundogs & Retrievers
Bullmastiff, A little confusing the topic, covering a variety of subjects ?. Firstly the confusing bit : I think your chances of finding such a specific type dog are very remote unless somebody advertises such a dog,but that also depends on what everybody calls leggy ! I presume from the paragraph regarding the trial spaniels, that you have had a "trial standard dog" and also used it for beating/picking up and had a bad experience ? I think you will find, that the hunting tempo in spaniels for trials is encouraged to the max but also that it clinically works it`s beat that the dog i -
If it`s the hand held type be careful at first if you are using it with a relatively young dog, you`ll be surprised how big a bang comes of one ! They are a good tool to use in static retrieve training but beware if you are using it in conjunction with quartering then retrieving format .The simple reason being as we all know how cute dogs can be,the spaniel will soon start to focus his attention on you rather than quartering in anticipation of the retrieve.

A Very Sad time. This bitch has contributed a massive amount to her progenies successes and achievements.I`ve had a fair few dogs in my time, my own dogs relation to her on Sire side.He has been the most biddable dog to train and the best dog i have ever shot over. Cherish the memories. Take care.

Fay, From the vein of your topic i gather you do not require the dog to sit on flush,so the problem of sitting and staying i presume is when the dog is at heel. Follow the very informative threads put forward by Stroller and Philluk and you should see an improvement. I`m not a treat trainer myself for the simple reason that i would not want to increase the chances of a dog making a noise to prompt the reward when a task has been achieved.

point taken Dazzz,it was getting a bit silly ! stick in

dazzz breath in, clear your head and read the topic heading again, then try other words other than patronising and condescending- certainly not ! "cocker love" an expression, certainly not of the personal nature aimed at Timber.

Ranger81,A sensitive situation,I am a bit confused as why the dog is having a negative reaction to the gun being taken out ?. From my own experiences you will have to replicate the situation to solve it, with the dogs total attention being concentrated on an immensely positive task for the dog while in the background the negative replication is going on ( say start with an air rifle bang, hopefully achieving a shotgun / car back fire type sound ). As it has probably been covered in previous posts the stoking/comforting of the dog in a negative atmosphere will probably have the wrong eff

Big Respect to you Timber. Suppose my elderly tell it as you see it approach does`nt fit in the modern society with some people ! Thanks for your patience.

I know me and Casso have a good verbal spar on here, but to be fair he`s touched on a very good point on this one ! ( the dog will focus on you in a exciting situation when you become the release mechanism ) This is why i start the training process at 8 weeks ( non formal ) ball or sock, thus to enable a dog to get that early focus on you. Sounds like you need to tighten up that lead training/heel work up as well, make yourself the centre of attraction. when you think the dog is being distracted, try turning the dog in the opposite direction encouraging the dog to follow you. BUT One prob

huntinggladjohn, It must be a real test of your spaniels steadiness when your hunting on the rabbits, when your lurchers giving chase. well done.

I think the chap asked the virtues of the springer or cocker, not the spaniel v terrier ! As regards following lines, you train a dog to follow lines. Thats if you know what i mean ?
-
wuyung, I don`t think the merits of either Spaniel breed will require deliberation for the task you require them for, they both quarter, find, sit on flush and retrieve or that`s how they should be trained ! unorganized chaos comes to mind !

Just glad i could help !

Like it`s been mentioned before Casso, and not by me,why use 20 sentences when 1 will suffice. The only sentence worth paying attention to in the above post is as follows " if we praise the feeling of fear we are heading down the wrong road ". And DON`T THINK FOR ONE SECOND I`M SUGGESTING DO THE OPPOSITE. Regards the "one fits all approach to training",please read my other posts, which will then enlighten you a bit more ! One things for sure i don`t envy you running out 600 yards with that big bag of goodies when your dog`s just given you the fingers on the stop whistle or would w

Ftm, Yes it`s been covered before, and the age of the dog has a lot to do with it,so what do we do "sit back and let the dog mature out of it" ? No we read the dog. With your new found scientology approach, i`d of thought you would have this nailed in a nano second,or have you not completed the course yet. more or less it`s how you cure gun shyness ????????? Cabbiejack, PM me and i`ll give you the 1 and only 2013 free lesson, normally retailing at £4 to £600. Happy New Year. Ps tell anybody and i will know. !

As this very informative forum operates under pseudonyms,i would not abuse this position for possible financial gain.If a person can gain knowledge from the reply`s i post then that`s a job well done !.Also what lines work for me does`nt mean they will work for you. Regards K.

Now pal, don`t know what back ground your from, Lurchers i presume ? Slip and run/kill anything brigade, or the trained all round mouching dog. Your entry and goals for your dog will probably differ. My self progressed through the ranks of Lurchers in the same era of the then younger Phil Lloyd and the famous Minshaws Blue Lurcher !!.Reaching the pinnacle of my sport entering and winning the various Lurcher obedience competitions. Now working gundogs and trials is my game ( yes in that order ). So Moving on to your Cocker situation,if you have decent common sense and basic understanding of
