  1. My rabbit pen is good for teaching manners, where you at ?
  2. To be honest Hily, its something at the front of my mind when i retire,i do it with a couple of dogs already that i have trained for people.they come at holiday times etc and get a bit of a refresher ( rabbit pen or cure a fault ).But it`s outlined at the start, it`s not full on formal training that they are getting in all aspects. One thing i do and will not do is take dogs in if i cannot devote the time,i`ve seen dogs come back from so called professional dog trainers no further on and a grand lighter in the owners pockets.Straight away i have said to them how many dogs did you see in their
  3. Stevo, It`s not the energy of the dog that you need to subdue,it`s how you channel that energy.I am very dismissive of the statement that Spaniels die half trained,it`s more the case that the owner has failed to train the dog correctly, which is the case in 95% of all these Spaniel digs ! With you only acquiring the dog at 4 years of age,my advice to you is keep his hunting training pattern as tight to you as you can,and if this is achievable and the dog will also sit to flush then in my mind only then will you be able to go into the beating line. But another tip i will give you is that,i
  4. Tc, I don't think you need to emphasis the importance of wind direction to serious gundog people, whether its at a trial.picking up or shooting over my dogs the first thing I work out before I cast a dog is wind direction and scenting conditions. The only reason its so important to the Hpr breeds is that you can't hold them in the area. Better than a Lab in its chosen field very much so,I've never stated anything different, but while your on that runner we've been paid, fed and watered. .
  5. See what you started Possumtrapper Tiercel Ill tell you of my experiences of the HPR breed,1st a picking up experience where a bird shot and with a broken leg planed down and landed way up the bank over a river and behind some bushes ( the line off the fall was visable ).One of the pickers up with his WHP cast is dog which swam the river and upon getting out of the water began to range all over, until eventually and not taking a direct line came upon the wounded bird ( this was a marked retrieve 250 yards ), may i add the dog was basically out of control until it got right side of the wind
  6. Well,Such a non statement that is ! and best left over your side of the water..But as you maybe or not be aware we do send alot of trialing dogs over to your part`s, so some things cant be that bad. Stick in
  7. Why? Does the title HPR not give you a clue as to what the dogs in the right hands can do? TC Like i said each breed to their own specialty,i`ve only seen 2 HPR breeds actually used in the picking up mode. And while we are on the subject of picking up..there are 2 categories of picking up, hoovers and pickers up for long distance birds that have flown on !" Each picker up plays a very important part on the shoot day of which the shoot could not function efficiently without the two working together ".. But reading, and as you seem to be an exponent of the HPR breed could you answer m
  8. Why is it stupid to send a dog 600 yards,so you would walk the 600 yards ?." Me not stupid Lone Ranger " me train retriever to its strengths " So why have a dog and bark yourself !We have a moral duty to try and pick all wounded game on our estate.. Stick in
  9. Hi, 1 0f my gwp and wee gwp x can tell the difference between wounded and sitting game. If they come on a pricked bird and it runnes or tries to fly they wont stop till they pick it, but if they come on a healthy bird and it runs they are not pushed on chasing it down, cheers.I think unless you actually have a GWP you don't realise how good at retrieving they are and how much brains they have. Wideboy, I am not favoring any breed of dog against the other, just quite simply explaining that each dog excels in it`s own field,"excuse the pun".I run both Spaniels and Labs..and use them acco

  11. Why would you want to cross them? A good GWP will do anything a lab can and a lot more. TC Tiercel,Your first point is valid, myself can't understand why some one would want to cross s gundog breed, each has their own place.. As for your second point.I wouldn't train nor expect a Lab to quarter and point nor would I expect a pointer to retrieve a runner 600yrds away over wire fences and burns... Blind retrieve over water, ok only training a young dog. But he went on to retrieve better than most Labs, and found 'lost' birds better than all the spaniels on the shoot. Sadly I lost him to lu

  13. Now then Mr Martin, All of a sudden I've got some free space in my kennel for a Spaniel and I also have somebody requiring a spaniel to take on shoot days/companion.So if you would be so kind as to pm me with your address I can come and collect the dog ( with a fee to be arranged ) and in so could kill two birds with one stone so to speak. I also could post the lads a before and after video because I'm sure we would like to see a happy ending to such a stressful situation. Take care..
  14. Craigy, What people have got to be when training a dog is honest in their assessment of their dog...What some people may think is acceptable in the foundation training, can very quickly start to crack when the dog is introduced to to game. People can read all the books they want, but what handlers require is good on the job tuition,so you and the dog can learn together and assess your dogs strengths and weaknesses ... If you are serious about shooting or beating over your dog this season,i would seek the services of a competent dog handler who has a rabbit pen...YES at 8 months of age your sp
  15. Yes Stroller,he'll have to get that synchronized point spot on in the middle of the pond.On a more serious note, would you know any body in the north of England with a GSP field trial stud dog..just had a bloke on the phone needing the use of one..
  16. I think you will find that most shooting/dog working people will have heard of rabbit pens..Just out of interest what dog behavioural training do you offer and to whom ? Stick in..
  17. Rights lads,I've been a busy boy training etc.. The rabbit pen mystery ? I'm glad you've enquired and not presumed ! The rabbit pen is an essential piece of kit used in the training of gundogs, especially spaniels...The object of the pen is to instill steadiness in a dog, promote a good hunting pattern and to perfect the flushing of game. My own newly built 1/2 acre pen, contains false warrens, cover and lots of brashings. With the standard of dog obedience at most shoots being down right piss poor, albeit down to the handlers . I'm always mystified why budding shooting/dog men do not make m
  18. There are many basic things that have to be pieced together in the dog training jigsaw. Socializing a puppy doesn't get more basic in its informative years. So Don`t kick its arse !. Fortunately for you the dog will overcome its un- aided insecurities in its own time. Funny thing this dog training crack for luring trainers into a false sense of achievement, only to find that the not so naive dog, when introduced to game, exposes all the flaws in a poor administered training programme and unlike the socializing process through maturity. It will only serve the dog to fail... So when its raining
  19. Absolutely Brill that Do you know you just might have have something there We could advertise it as the " Throw away those god dam collars, here`s wonder lead and whistle in one"...... You`ve put the sunshine back into a shit week i`ve had ........ cheers Kid
  20. That is not a good video at all. The dog is bored to death that is why the dog as no "go" about it. The dog sits, when it wants to, even though he gives it hand signals, whistle AND says sit. It drops the retrieve. Classic example of moving on to the next part of training without mastering the previous part. Now Pal,I`m unable to send you a personnel message for that info you required....says your not accepting them...just PM me again... maybe with an email address.
