What do you use for tunnels in your court?
Madcowz replied to ShaggyRS6's topic in Ferrets & Ferreting
Cable ties are very cheap. Make sure you get the releasable ones so that you can take it all apart easily. I use the same ones from our server room as they are a decent size. In our court, I screw right through them to attach them to the wall, then just join two together. The ribbing on the pipe stops the cable tie from slipping. When it comes to cleaning it is a 5 second job to undo. /Mad -
That is so true. hard to find anything well made these days. They really don't make em like they used to. /mad

Excellent thread this. Must try some of these ferret 'recipies' on mine. /mad

Guys don't knock him for buying the stuff. Not everyone is comfortable with theft and it is refreshing to see people willing to spend good money on their little workers and like willy said, better than pissing it up a wall! I certainly wouldn't steal anything, and if I want something I just have to work for it (call me an idiot but that is just the way I was brought up). I am just lucky that I help out on the local farm and could pop round and get some for free. /mad -

We use 100mm flexible land drainage pipe, easy to bend and cut. We also use cable ties round the pipe to attach it to the walls. The ridges in the pipe stop the ties slipping and the whole thing can be removed for cleaning. Drill a wood screw through the cable tie into the wall. I would always ask or buy rather than pinch. But thats just me. /Mad -
Wanted: line drawing/colouring picture of a ferret
Madcowz replied to Madcowz's topic in Ferrets & Ferreting
I think that Ferret dance one is perfect, thank you. Should make a nice little booklet for them. thanks, /mad -
Hi, left this to the last moment as usual but was wondering if anyone had a line drawing of a ferret that would be suitable for colouring in. I am doing a ferret demo/talk at the local beavers group tomorrow night. I will be taking along one of the gang, the box, a few nets, the knocker box and a 'Ferret Facts' handout I have prepared. Was hoping to attach a picture of a fert on it so they could take it away and colour in and make a booklet for them. thanks, /mad This is all I have so far and it doesn't look that great:

I use tiny 9 gram size #6 for rats and sometimes close rabbits and other vermin. Hard to find other sizes of .410 ammo which is a shame as I love it. Especially on a hot summers day when I don't want to lug the 12 around but still need and 'excuse' to go for a walk. Many a crow/jackdaw/rat has fallen to the .410 near the chicken run. Also quiet enough to not annoy the neighbours. /Mad

Problems catching mystery beast in our ceiling
Madcowz replied to Madcowz's topic in Snaring, Trapping & Pest Control
No offence was meant towards builders. A good honest, highly skilled trade that earns more than my 10 years in IT and most of them drive better cars than my falling apart H reg Clio. Damn them, should have been a plumber! Anyway, I have 5 traps down and so far have caught 3 mice in 3 nights. One per night. I put a live catch trap up in the attic that I found in the garden (it has two compartments, one has two entrances. Then another entrance at an angle into the second compartment. This also has a sliding metal door for human access) and the bait tray has been moved but nothing -
Fantastic work there on the cull. I too make a special effort to shoot squirels whenever I am out and have had a good effect on the local woods. The local fly fishing club now has more tails than they can handle and the song birds will thank me in the spring. /Mad

Problems catching mystery beast in our ceiling
Madcowz replied to Madcowz's topic in Snaring, Trapping & Pest Control
Thanks for the advice D.S. We had cleared the problem up a good few months ago with trapping. Got 12 over a period of 3 weeks and then it went quiet until a few days ago. Our landlord originally said it was our problem as it was in our lease that we had to deal with vermin. I phoned them today and said that the mice were woodmice and coming in from outside so no longer our problem. They are going to send a builder round to try and block up any external holes we have. Is this a waste of time? Should I get a pro in to find the holes? No offence to builders but they are not exactly e -
Problems catching mystery beast in our ceiling

Hi guys, Need some more advice on my mouse in the house issue I have please. Went to the attic tonight and found that one of my traps had fired and the other one has gone completely. Both of these were tied to fencing staples with string so easy to chew through. Also I lifted a board up and there are quite a few bits of mouse there. Some halves other just bits. A few weeks ago I checked the traps, one had caught a mouse and I had to go out straight away so left it until I came home. when I did the mouse was gone. It was defiantely very dead and didn't get up and walk away on it's o -
Thanks D.S. Will have a hunt for some. Woodies are coming back now it is getting cold. Can't blame em, the attic is a damn site warmer and safer than the woods. BTW, read an article about some new high tech traps that would send an SMS to the owner when the mouse had been caught. They also trapped the mouse and killed it with a blast of poison/gas can't remember what though. Thought it all sounded a little crazy and if it's anything like the high tech we have at work, would forever be breaking down. /Mad

So guys, your advice please. which would you recommend? The Selfset or the Roguard or...? thanks, /Mad

Tee hee, I can almost imagine the DEFRA Health & Safety Course for Class 1 Little Nipper setting and Deployment (£599 + VAT). It would be a full days course a well knowing that lot. Joking aside (and I hope it is a joke...) what should I use for Woodmice? They will be back soon considering we are surrounded by woods and as winter fast approaches, our attic looks more and more tempting. Nippers are too small, Fenns are too big. Is there something that is more suitable for the woody? thanks, /Mad

Sorry DS wasn't having a go. I really respect your experience and some of your views and read your, often long and detailed posts several times from start to finish to soak up as much of your knowledge as possible and respect the fact that you go out of your way to impart your knowledge on us newbies. Not many people do this and for that I thank you. I have stopped using the nippers as luckily managed to rid the attic of our night time visitors, but my question was a general one in that how can they be so strict with what you can and can't use as a trap but allow off the shelf, amate

But you yourself said a while back that they weren't designed for the beefier wood mouse: So, is it fair to question how we are setting them when you yourself said they are not up to the job of killing the bigger Wood Mouse! And in answer to your other point about tweaking them, I have already trimmed the dog bar back as it was far too long when I bought them and them set so light they often go off when I place them. Also take my time and double check everything. A badly set trap is a waste of time. regards, /Mad

I'm interested in what the criteria and type of testing is for legal traps in the UK. I have a couple of Little Nipper mouse traps that unfortunately didn't always kill outright 100%. I bought a few more to see if I had a bad batch but they were the same. How come these are still legal? /Mad

I have a Mk1 and I use the collars on the ferts but so far the finder has stayed in the bag. Hope to keep it that way. /Mad

Good news Stubby. You will have to come down for the day fairly soon, but perhaps best if you leave the finder with all t he flashing lights and disco sounds behind :-) /Mad

Couple of questions: 1) Would a standard size pallet fit in the back with the seats down? i.e. is it wide enough? 2) Manual or auto? I have never driven an auto and don't think I want to and think they would be harder to fix, but open to opiniomns... thanks, /mad

Thanks for the replies guys. Certainly sounds promising. As I said, I don't mind getting my hands dirty and working on it if it needs it, but as it would be my main vehicle I can't affod it to be off the road for long. Going to start saving up now and hopefully in a years time I might have enough to buy a wheel or two (judging by our cash flow) What is the general feelings between 200 or 300 tdi? thanks, /Mad

We have wanted a landy for a long time now and I have finally decided to start researching one. I originally wanted a 110 but think a Disco would be more suitable (need it to commute to work as well). We have 3 kids so it needs to be able to seat 5 + extra if we are taking others. I have been advised to go for a Disco 1 as they are cheaper and less bits to go wrong which is important for me as I will be doing all the repairs myself. I currently have a 16 year old Clio on which I do all repairs, although I am by no means a good mechanic, just handy with a blow torch and hammer. I am
