  1. Cor, this thread really should be called 'Pimp my Court'. Some nice looking set ups here. Mine is still under construction and time is running out, only have 4-5 weeks before I pick up the kits. This is how it looked a little while ago: and now with some of the shuttering and part of the floor laid: Still alot of work to do. But by the end of this week, I am hoping to have the ceiling in and the front mesh done. /Mad
  2. They are 2 1/2 weeks old just now. Ferret court is still frantically under construction, just started to put the ceiling in over the weekend. Loved those photos you sent last week. A basket full of kits, very sweet. /Mad
  3. Hi Marie, glad you joined, and hope you get some of your ferts rehomed. regards, Hedley (Madcowz)
  4. Needing a vet? I would have needed to go to bloody hospital with shock if I had seen all that. Trust mother nature to just get on with it. bless. /Mad
  5. Thanks for all the replies. I am only starting off with two jills, but just wanted a comparison between the jill smell and the hob smell and a comparison between a jill and a hoblet smell. Interested to know how much of a difference there is. I quite like the smell of the hoblets I have sniffed/held so far, way better than the smell of stinky cat piss. Although I might be tempted to get a hob as well, I have seperate houses/runs for them for the summer. /Mad
  6. A very restrained response, quite impressed there. That answered my next question on how these poor animals are put out of their misery I expect all manner of hormone/endorphins, smells and other stimuli are produced. All giving the other mice plenty of warning. poor sods. /mad
  7. <I must be wrong but> I thought they were illegal as they were cruel</I must be wrong but> Compared to your problem of hundreds of mice, our attic seems such a small problem! I always enjoy watching the mice when I have to catch the tube. Fun to watch them scurrying around the tracks between trains.
  8. Hi, I keep on reading about the musky ferrety smell that hobs have and how this increases in the summer as they try to smell nice for the ladies. The thing is that all of the articles I read mention hobs and not jills. How much do jills smell on average when compared to a hob? Is a jill comparable to a hoblet? How much of a difference is there between a hoblet and an entire male? To be honest, I like the smell of the hoblets that I have sniffed so far, but this friend doesn't have any jills for me to do the sniff test with. thanks, /Mad

Amen to that, not easy being a newbie. Lets hope he hasn't been put off by all this nonsense and comes back if he has more questions to ask. Shows a very mature attitude. /mad

Think you meant: They look so sweet all cuddled up like that. /mad
  11. That statement so sums up the 'other' type of ferret books out there. As the others have mentioned: Graham Wellstead Fred J Yaylors James McCay Shame that there are no new modern books out there. Time for somone to update the bookshelf! /Mad
  12. Sorry D.S. I didn't enjoy dealing with it either, quite upsetting. But as you say, they are legal to use and if they are not up to the job they shouldn't be sold. I will refrain from buying them again as I like a clean kill whatever the target. If there is a problem with these traps, we need to highlight this and as horrible as it is to talk about it at least it raises awareness. I will start off with Blacks Organic Dark Chocolate, that way I have a chance of catching the wife as that is her absolute favourite. :-) /Mad
  13. You are right, I did mean the killing bar. Set the traps again yesterday and checked it before going out for the day and the bait had been taken, but the trap hadn't fired, and this was on fine, hair trigger, hanging off the end of the setting bar setting. Anyway, got home late after taking kids to see Grandparents and went to rebait the empty trap and there was another mouse in it. Poor thing had died going after an empty trap. Never mind, must have been the odour of peanut butter left on the trap. Quote tempted myself. Slurp. I have also now drilled holes in the little nippers an
  14. How old are they? is it about 2-3 weeks? Look gorgeous. /Mad
  15. I have three children and am thinking about getting the snip myself. Hope this doesn't stop me from wanting to go out shooting. /Mad
  16. I read, and I can't remember where or I would quote the source, that you shouldn't use coloured paper for some reason. Think it was because the ink was different on coloured paper? Can anyone shed any light on this please? thanks, /Mad
  17. Horrible things, we recently had an infestation in our chicken coop. It was so bad that when I was in there cleaning I was covered in a crawling mass of mites, in my hair, my ears everywhere. They were living in the ceiling as it was made out of slats with roofing felt on top so they had plenty of places to hide. Was so bad that I used some of the board for the ferts shed and built them a complety new roof and floor, then silicon sealed every corner and smoothed down and then painted with white gloss. Now we can spot em and remove easily as they have nowhere to hide. But, back
  18. Genetics! I can't say for certain as it was many years I did my degree and most of what I learnt was washed away by beer. But, even if the mother or father are white, they can still have resessive genes for another colour. See: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Genetics /mad
  19. We don't have an attic per se as our ceiling is vaulted. The only space we have is above the bathroom where the header tanks is. In there I have two traps. Will try and get more, the problem is where I work there are only boutiques and cafes, great for gays and wimmin but no use to a bloke! The traps are pretty well tuned, as I said in an earlier post, I trimmed 3mm off the setting bars and the staples are literally hanging off the end. I have a big torch with me so I can see what I am doing. I also check the traps often as a fired trap is not going to catch any more. But so far, the o
  20. Agree with you there, I had to buy four chokes for my Laurona recently. From their distributor they were £40 a piece, from the U.S. they were $35, and as you say, with the exchange rate as it is, it was a no-brainer. Too much information! Thanks for the link, See I wouldn't ever consider shopping from there as I don't know anything about them. But a recommendation changes everything. I like the Real Tree shirt for those hot summer days. thanks DS, /Mad
  21. And rightly so, otherwise anyone new coming along to this forum could well get the wrong idea. Same with pictures of traps which have caught something. We need to make sure that we state that the tunnel/cover has been removed for photographing. /mad
  22. They are just sooo cute! /mad
  23. Interesting thread. I am lucky in that everyone at my work appreciates good quality organic, free range food and understands and respects me for what I do. They just can't kill, gut and skin anything without feeling sick! They are more than happy to buy the prepacked rabbit, pigeon and our chooks eggs from me though. In fact, everyone at my work place buys our eggs and when our chooks stopped laying, they were really unhappy to go back to the 'sh*t that was sold in the shops', their words not mine! I think that the rise in programs like River Cottage has really helped to push the n
  24. DS, Please give us more information (obviously I have found the above company). I can't speak for everyone here but it has taken me a long time just to find the few links/contacts I have, and if we don't know about the better quality places 'hiding' out there or just needing a recommendation from the old timers (yourself excluded from that of course!) then we will still continue to buy rubbish in error. thanks, /mad
