You'll be fine Boston! Selective deafness does happen, but not often! Regarding the cat, just make sure the pup knows from day one that it's not to mess with the cat. A firm 'no' if it starts to give the cat the eye, even a tap on the nose when you say 'no'. I don't mean give it a good hiding, but a small tap won't do the pup any harm. Never had a cat though, so my advice might not be any use! All the best, Shell

Good luck with the pup! We always take pups out once they've had their innoculations (as long as we're not going miles and miles), but we take the game bag with us, and if pup gets tired, we put it in the game bag with its head poking out of the side so it can still see something. Gives its legs a rest for a bit! They don't learn anything sat at home. Even if for the first year you're just teaching it basic field manners, its learning something. Most important bit of training to me is recall. Teach pup its name and to come when you call it around the house in those first few weeks and

cymruguy69 - thanks! Yes they've all got homes. Had quite a few homes sorted before they were born. The collie dog is going to a friend of ours, the red chow chow is going to a friend of the guy who has the father, and we're keeping reeba. shell

Thanks Skycat. She's definately going to be a handful is Reeba! Good job that Red is going to an experienced lurcher man... she's trouble lol

Just thought I'd update you all on how the 3 survivors from Atols litter are doing. They are all going from strength to strength, although Reeba (the blue merle) had us a bit worried a couple of weeks ago as she didn't seem to be doing so well with the solids, and Atol was showing very little interest in feeding the pups anymore. Anyway, Reeba got the hang of eating and is doing really well now. They are 7 weeks old tomorrow, and had their first innoculation at 6 weeks. We've moved them downstairs now so they can get used to everyday sights, smells and sounds in the house. The beauty

Malcs looking for an old type postmans bag. The old brown canvas type, not the blue or red ones. The type everyone used to use as game bags. He's got about 3 different game bags in the cupboard, so he wants a fourth to add to the collection! No, he can't settle with any of them except his ancient one that stinks and is about 20 years old. Anyone got one they are willing to sell? shell

collie/grey - yeah the vet was telling us about the injections. You can also have dogs blood tested to see if they have it. The owner of the stud dog is having him tested because he was wanting to use him at stud in the future. As for Atol, I very much doubt we'll breed from her again, but if we do, we'll have her tested too. it's likely though that Atol will have built up an immunity to the virus and may possibly have future litters without any problems. We've learnt a lot from this experience! Like you say, we've got 3 healthy survivors to focus on now. Shell

skycat - nice looking pup there. Hob & Gill - she is big yes. Really solid. She's had some knocks over the years but never *touch wood* had anything bad. The pup that we had (p***y) was very light framed and the accident she had totally shattered her back leg. If it had of been Atol that had hit the rock, it would have been a different story I think. She'd have been bruised and battered no doubt, but still with us. The sire is an old fashioned norfolk type collie greyhound. Rough coated dark dog, stunning, works like a good one. Line bred for years and years. Don't have a picture

Thanks everyone! Height wise they will be fairly big. Mother is 27 inch to the shoulder, father is a bit taller, probably 28 inch. We wanted something like Atol that can handle the country round here. I've no idea if they will keep the blue eyes. Maybe someone could tell me? Shell

After losing p***y in that accident last September we've been looking for a suitable lurcher pup to join the pack. Nothing stood out, so when Atol (our big collie greyhound) came into season we decided to breed off her. The guy that bred p***y offered us a stud, so we used Pikeys full uncle. At 8 weeks Atol was massive! I was hoping she wouldn't have a big litter. In all she had 10 pups. A couple were still born, and she laid on one the first night. Left us with 7. She seemed happy enough and settled really well with them. Then disaster struck. One by one the puppys started fadin

We had the same problem a while back. Cured it in no time. Blow an egg, then fill it wil tabasco sauce, place it in the nesting box. Only had to do this once and the hen never broke an egg again. shell

Has anyone got a genuinely good strain of ratting ferret? I'm currently working a mixture of polecats and white ones that are generally used for rabbits. Recently ratting permission has grown even more. Getting peed off with the smokers, not sure how effective they are, so I've gone back to ferreting the rats. I've got one gill absolutely top banana on rats, but not the best rabbiting ferret. My really good rabbiting ferrets aren't that sparkling on rats. I know ferrets will jib on rats if they've been bit, but up to press none of them have had any bad bites. So I was just wondering if any

Does your partner get envolved with your hobby???
shell replied to Berkutchi's topic in General Talk
Yeah my husband gets involved with working the dogs with me and the little one. Same with Molly, once he's done the housework he can come out with the dogs. (yeah right - housework?!!!) Shell -
Sorry to hear that Vim. Shell

Thanks guys! She's totally obsessed with the dogs. If the front door is open she's off, taking her best mate Tick (the terrier spaniel cross) with her. If the gate is open onto the yard she's away feeding the beagle pups and hounds biscuits! Takes her trusty walking stick everywhere with her! shell

I went to get some logs with my 21 month old daughter from the log shed last Friday and let all the dogs out onto the yard with me. They all disappeared up into the top barn where next winters wood is stored. Nim, my daughter followed them up and I went to investigate. The terriers disappered under the barn door, so Nim had to go and have a look at what they were doing... The terriers were telling me something was there, both pups were getting stuck in with the adults... Nim was proding about between the gaps in the logs with her walking stick that Malc had made her month

LocalYokel... usually it's best to tap birch during the 2nd - 4th weeks of March. Thats when the sap usually starts rising. But like you 've both said, it's an odd season! shell

Wasn't sure where to put this - mods move it if you want. I was wondering if anyone in the Bradford area would keep their eyes out for this lad. Name: Teal Age: 7 (although looks younger) Sex: Male Breed: Labrador Colour: Black Circumstances: Went missing from my friend Martins mother in laws house at Allerton, Bradford, on the 9th January 07. We thought he might be making his way back from the in laws house to Martins, but he'd have made it back by now. Martin is absolutely distraught. It's not like Teal to go missing like this. If anyone sees or hears anything in the Bra

Our smoker is made from a strimmer, a friend made the exhaust system and fitted the pipe so it looks the dogs doo-dahs! Problem we tend to have is people getting too excited with the smoker. It's ok for that initial blast to get them bolting, but any more and the rats are gassed to ground and you end up digging to them and they're half dead to ground. Farmer at the chicken farm doesn't mind us digging half his land up as he says we turn it over nicely! But I imagine some people would mind. We always start off with the smoker then make the same mistake we make every time of gassing them.

Congratulations on the birth of your gorgeous son! What's he called then? All the best, Shell

Simoman... I'm sure there's plenty of rats to go round! Can't beat a good days ratting! Shell
