  1. Cheers for all the advice and info lads appreciated and taken on board. Definitely getting running dog maintenance and researching some basic first aid. Its good to know what everyone else has it saves not having it when you need it. I won't be trying to replace my vet, just general first aid in emergencies. Edit Sorry thanks to the ladies too,how sexist of me.
  2. I may travel north Yorkshire. I'll pm you mate.
  3. Like I said I didn't ask about what experience I need to use it. First aiders go on a little course they don't go to university. Thanks blackstreak like you say commonsense and a bit of research. Im not doing brain surgery just first aid. In the army we did have some training but it's still not the real thing. My point is desertbred it's not practical to get experience with every accident that can occur. If you'd have said try asking an experienced hand show you what to do with it, something along those lines is more practice unless he already has dogs sitting around with injuries. For all you
  4. That's not practical or realistic really. An accident can happen anywhere at any time. At home and in the field. I'd have to tag along for hell of a long time. To be fair I didn't ask what experience I need, or what to do in an emergency. Rtfq
  5. Anyone got any kits in Cumbria. Need a hob and a jill. May travel for good stock. Cheers

  7. I spent many an hour in the company of and watching a very good trainer of working and trial sheepdogs. The things he could do with his charges held me spellbound and i put all this new found knowledge into 3 pups i bred,by the time they were 8 months old i had them retrieving, waiting,in sight or out of,moving left, right, forward and behind, running to a gate and waiting etc.,all independant of each other. The bloody pups were a joy to behold, alas i ruined 2 of them, when i got around to the serious stage of their education, the chase and catch, they were totally dependant on me for command and near
  8. I'm not disagreeing with giving it a lesson it won't forget. When I had my spaniel at a gun dog training she became a whines . Won't sit still fror long without starting. I was told then that when she whines give her a lesson she'll never forget but if it don't work don't do it again. She still whines though fricking thing. I know sheep worrying is world's apart and would still give a dog a tough lesson if I had too. I'm not saying that a good foundation is all you need but you need it before you start doing the training you did around sheep. You obviously put a lot time in to stock breaking y
  9. Don't think I'd me much use at stitching. Plus he's a bit of a woos, staples probably best. Cheers
  10. Spot on. Decent shopping list there. Thanks for that

  12. When you look at people who compete there dogs in trials training never stops, it's a constant thing. No different with any dog really, always topping up there training
  13. I don't think the dogs in question will have had anywhere near the amount of training required, not just stock breaking but everything else too. Im just a beginner myself but I'm starting to realise and listen to others on how much time and effort you have to put into dog to have an obedient reliable worker. It's not a case of well I walked it on the lead past some fields with sheep in for a week and there ready for release. it takes alot more, and more on top of that if you've skipped on early obedience. My pup broke it's leg before Christmas so I am just starting getting him trained now,and
  14. Wondering what kind of kit everyone keeps for emergencies for their dogs. I.e field first aid kits and supplies for illness or injury. Interested as I could do with getting a first aid kit together for in the field before I start working my pup. Cheers
  15. Might make a good police dog. Ssshh don't give them any ideas. Imagine one of them on your tail along with the quad bikes and foresters
  16. It looks rubbish in silver
  17. Id say most have enough greyhound blood in them for most people, and they feel there's no need for anymore as people seem happy they have enough speed in there dogs, and the purpose of crossing in the first place that made the lurcher was for a harder more intelligent dog that was better for the job and to add grey back in is pointless to go backwards. I think instead of adding grey blood, breeding lurcher to lurcher keeps from too much of each each cross coming through.you'd be better starting from scratch with a total new line to end up with a bit more speed through adding to the greyhound r
  18. I've never heard of anyone getting dog vasectomised, has anyone else? Could be a good plan for me as I'm in the same boat.
  19. A real rabbit will lure it out by smell if put at the mouth of a hole, where as the ferret would have to be at that particular hole to see the lure. Try getting down low as not to tower over the hole. Try standing back a bit. I have a skulker always use a rabbit or if haven't caught one then just stand back and let them come out a fair bit before picking them up
  20. Thanks for all the replies. Its good to hear most your dogs recovered from breaks. Rest rest rest. Hes not allowed to be a pup which is pretty hard when they are nutters. Im staying positive and hoping he recovers well. 6 weeks to wait for his next xray. Vet doesnt know if the pins will come out. If it doesnt heal enough might have to leave them in which may cause problems as he grows. Hopefully will be able to take them out. Still have no idea how he did it. Free insurance ran out 4days before and didnt get round to sorting it out so have to pay out my pocket. Specialist quoted £1700 for th
  21. Merry f in christmas. My pup broke its leg on sunday. No idea how, let him out in the garden 2 seconds later was yelping and wouldnt put weight on one of his back legs. £800 pound later and hes on complete rest for the forseeable future. Hes 41/2 months and has fractured the tibia (I think) below his knee. Tendon that goes from the knee pulled a piece of unfused bone right up on itself. Question??? How much does a break as a pup affect an adult working dog. Anyone been through the same? Just Trying to keep him as quiet as possible so he doesnt undo the surgery.
  22. My spaniel just has a stump. About 2 inch left. Got a really bad skin infection right on the tip of her tail, it just wouldn't heel. Vet said it was best to have it off and took it right down. Gasnt been any bother since.
