I’ve been busy for a week or two , thought I’d drop in to see how things have been doing . It’s like a teacher that leaves his class and comes back into a chimps tea party !!! FFS , what did Jesus say ? Let he without sin cast the first stone . I remember when I started shooting and had my first shotgun , I was like a man possessed. I shot things that I shouldn’t have . I made mistakes, felt bad and didn’t do it again . The trouble with the tinterweb is that you can post pictures like that , let’s all learn from it and move on .

Not really, they are released in pens at about 6 weeks old then after a week or two the they are given their freedom, no more fences . Hence the need to control foxes who love the young pheasant “ buffet “ .

It’s got to be a comedy/fictional character he has created for YouTube .

Spaniel / gun dog trainers have rabbit pens to help train steadiness in this country. There is no law against it . If you wanted to fence your land off and release foxes you could . In fact there is no law against pest controllers or animal charities dumping foxes . There are also land owners in Scotland who want to rewild large areas of land . If in your fenced off land some dogs had a little chase and play , who would know ? I wouldn’t be surprised if there was something similar or small scale in this country.

There are some good jobs out there . They tend to be for wealthy families or individuals, who want to provide sport for themselves and their guests. It is a huge expense for them and a statement of their wealth. They tend to provide their keepers with what they need to do the job with good accommodation and salary. But these jobs are few and far between. Jobs for commercial shoots can be intense and high pressure. They take on young lads fresh from college and spit them out after a season, disillusioned and out of love with keepering. People can see the job through rose tin

First outing with the Senopex A7

A good write up Ian , I am tempted to get a thermal scope , but I am very happy with my Wraith , which is a step up from my old pulsar N970lrf . The one thing I like about Thermal scopes is that sometimes at range it can take time to find your target, particularly if it’s moving away and you haven’t got eye shine , with thermal it’s a lot quicker. I will definitely be getting one in the near future . I have used a pulsar Xp50 and it was awesome. -
I have collected the glands and used lard to preserve it . But for my use I have made “ fox juice “ . I would soak some foxes in a tub and a bit like wine makers , I would tread on them in my wellington boots to extract as much bodily fluids as possible . After a day or so , the fluid is drained off and kept in a plastic barrel . It smells like nothing you would want to get on on you put it that way . I then decant some into a spray bottle. It works fantastically for stopping a fox for a shot or when drawing them into an area which has snares .

I was out just before Xmas and had a fox curl up in front of me , they had been mating further up the field and there were other foxes barking. There were sheep in the field and the grass was too long to get a decent shot from my vantage point , and I wasn’t after Charlie anyway so let it sleep . My nocturnal shooting has finished for the moment now . All the chickens have been locked up because of AI , so no need of protection . But I have a farm that will be lambing soon so I’m going to try to make a dent in their fox population now . I did get out in the snow t

I quit 30 years ago , and can’t ever understand how I could put one to my lips , let alone inhale , but I did . But in later years when I’d packed in , I was out and about on my rounds , I could smell fag smoke ( Wolfdog , it’s not what you guys think …. It’s tobacco) a couple of fields away , so imagine how a fox could wind you . The same goes for aftershave or deodorants. An absolute no no when night shooting in my book .

Good to see you back posting SD . An O/U ? I’m not saying anything. ?

I wouldn’t mind reading that but if I click subscribe , with my luck I will probably end up with a time share I never wanted .

It’s still here and it’s compacted ice on the road outside my house. I went to Hereford on Tuesday, and they haven’t had anything like what we have . It’s a nightmare.

What’s your budget Denboy ? I would buy a secondhand Beretta 686 or Browning B325 or B425 , or Miroku MK38 , Mk60 or Mk70 . If you are of average build and height then you could pick up anyone of these standard stock size guns and get on with it . The Beretta is bombproof and doesn’t need a lot of maintenance, the Brownings like to be kept oiled . You could have any one of these guns and take if anywhere, shoot game or clays and not want to upgrade . And if you fall out of love with shooting , you can re sell it and not lose any money. The only warning I would say is that if we

No problem Si . Have a good visit . I’m ok for powder , thanks anyway. See you when the weather is better . Enjoy the Stirrup cup , or stomach pump as it’s known locally.?

I should have been playing skittles in there tomorrow. Give me a bell Si when you get down , if you and your lad fancy a trip out , I can sort it . ?

I think they would try my mate Carls house first . He has BASC stickers and feeders in his truck , dead pheasants handing in his porch , and only wears realtree . ??

Well done FH . The snow here is about 4” deep and it’s been coming down all day . Fog this morning. The shoot I should have been loading on tomorrow is cancelled. But I got a call from a mate who is struggling for beaters , so I will try to get out beating instead tomorrow, and because I’ve got a 4x4 I’ve been roped into putting the daughters horse in this evening and putting out in the morning. I’m envious, I love getting out with a rifle in the snow . I might get out tomorrow afternoon if we finish early enough. Nothing like spotting Charlie against a white backdrop.

I was at a shoot last week and there was a wreath on the door to the shoot lodge. I thought that’s nice , I will make my own . A trip up to the grave yard and found a wreath frame on the compost heap. I collected some 28 bore cartridges and set about drilling them and cable tying them to the frame , a couple of fancy decorations and voila, a wreath fit for any shooting man’s front door . Then the sister in law comes around and says “ you are advertising to the world that you have guns “ . Now my wife wants it down . But I’m digging my heels in . What do you think ? Up or do

Non toxic shotgun shells
shovel leaner replied to shovel leaner's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
I wouldn’t use expensive cartridges on pigeons or crows . What we were saying is that driven shooting isn’t cheap and as such there is little point not taking the best cartridges you can afford. I don’t know how many of us do this , but it’s worth spending time testing your shotgun/ cartridge on a pattern plate. But I tend to just get the best value cartridge’s I can for vermin . -

Agree . You shouldn’t skimp on cartridges. It’s a small price compared to everything else . Imagine you are under the bird of a lifetime, with everyone watching and you don’t do it justice. At least if you have decent cartridges, you only have yourself to blame . I got a slab of “Purple fury “ from just cartridges. They were the best game cartridges I’ve used or seen being used . Fast easy on the shoulder and the kills at range were unbelievable.
