hi. i live in the Monmouth area, i am 15 and still at school, but am on summer holidays, and was wondering if any gamekeepers in this area were willing to give me a chance to work with them over the summer, i am keen and willing to learn, i am safe around guns, have shot rifles, and i have been shooting shotguns since the age of 6, i also have a basic knowledge of animal husbandry. any help with finding work experience would be much appreciated

wouldnt mind some geese is they any money in it? im getting some turkeys on wednesday. we have kept geese in large amounts before, if you are thinking of selling them on live, tere is a small amount of money, to make it pay you have to keep quite a few, and if you are planning to sell them ready to cook e/g plucked and gutted, it is a hell of a lot of work by hand, 1.5 hours average per bird, youcan buy a machine that basically waxesthem, but it is a lot of money good luck

we use to keep pigs mate been thinking about it need to have a word with my dad about it.. market had dropped a bit recently, but they are an easy animal to keep

fair play to the though, they are hard sods, most of them

with a smaller amount of land, if you want livestock of course, you should go for pigs, and rotate them, pigs require only a small amount of land to keep them happy, but the land takes longer to recover, this is where rotation comes into play. hope whatever you choose works for you

I shot with a HW100 for quite a while and always found the Nikon Monarch an excellent scope for both targets and hunting, especially for the price http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/NIKON-MONARCH-6X42-DUPLEX-HUNTING-RIFLESCOPE-SCOPE-RIFLE-SIGHT-/130701905298?pt=UK_SportingGoods_Hunting_ShootingSports_ET&hash=item1e6e70cd92#ht_1348wt_1139

for ratting and rabbits at short range they are a good cartridge due to low noise, but they lack the speed and killing power of heavier loads witch if you want to shoot rabbits or other game at longer range

Nice one

rare oppertunity for young lad
buzzrobbie replied to lanber's topic in Gamekeeping, Conservation & Shoot Management
i would jump at the chance to do this, if only it was in my area, i am surprised there are no takers, its such an amazing opportunity. -
At the moment, i am having particular trouble with crossers especially if they are dropping, what is the best method to take them with e.g maintained lead or swing through, any advice would be appreciated, cheers

If you are looking for a well priced first gun, you cant go far wrong with a Baikal, i had one for quite a while and never had a problem with it. as for cartridges, depending on your size you ma want to start shooting 21 gram cartridge, i don't personally use them because i don't find them powerful enough, but many beginners struggle with the recoil of heavy loads.
