    Not sure whether it's something ive done to it by taking it apart, or whether it's got buggered over the last few months. The baffle next to the threading, is completely stuck, so it may be that the round is getting thrown off trajectory slightly as its leaving the mod. It was the mod in the middle picture. Dont know the history behind it, as it was second hand ;so my plan is just to get rid of it and grab another one on a variation.

    Rifle back today, Guy that took it to the range told me. 5 shots with no moderator - nice tight group, 5 shots with my moderator, way up and left from zero, 5 shots with a new moderator, back to centre and nice groups. So the moderator is just fooked! Good news I guess, as at least it's not the barrel and can be sorted easily! Thanks for all the info/advise, I'd have been arsing around for weeks with it all otherwise trying to work it out. Guys at the local RFD are a really good bunch of guys and girls. Rakers in Petworth - highly recommended if anyone is in the area!

    Hey snap, The rifle came from the factory already cut, so i can only assume it'll have been done to a decent standard there? Then again, you know what they say about assumption......... Again, it doesnt explain why it suddenly started to shoot like crap, only after the mod had been taken off and then replaced........

    Well, took the rifle to a local dealers, He reckons the crown is absolutely fine, as it's not causing an issue with any of the rifling. As for the rezeroing issue - with the mod on, it looks like it's bent very slightly up and right. Looks the same with any other mod he put on. So it may be the seating of the barrel behind the threading he reckoned. It's gone off today to the range, to have a couple of moderators on it, to test fire, to see whether it's the barrel or the mod itself. Worst case is, it'll need cut down slightly, and rethreaded.     Thanks for all the advise guys. Think I'll do myself a favour and bin the mod. It came with the gun when I bought it, and never knew too much about it. I'm guessing it's burnt out at some point, as I only left it attached twice after shooting and that was over a period of 2 days - and it was stuck fast! Maybe had about 50 rounds through it in that period. Is this just gash handed on my part, or should it be getting welded on in that space of time? The mod stayed on for about a month after that, so that's where the damage has been done.

    The last baffle of the mod (the coned bit at the back that is threaded) is completely stuck. Not budging for love nor money!

    Heya Deker, Yeah mine is the one in the middle. Think it's probably fit for the bin. Will take it all down to the gunsmiths tomorrow and see what they reckon. Are the sako mods the way forward then?

    I think the benefits outway the negatives with a mod. As long as I can hit the quarry, at least somewhere within the critical kill zone, so that they are dispatched humanely, that's the main thing. That's why I'm not so keen to go out blasting away with dodgy accuracy, as aside from the fact i'm not going to hit them, I want to know the bullets aren't flying off somewhere they shouldn't! I'm not too bothered about having 1" groups, and all that nonsense on paper Lesson learned - TAKE THE MOD OFF EVERY TIME I GET HOME

    Well I think these are pretty good exhibits of 'Why its bad to leave a mod attached for any length of time' - you live and learn!!! The copper solvent took off a lot of the crap that had built up, and revealed a fair bit of pitting around the edge, and around the last few turns of the threading. Obviously this is why I had so much trouble getting the mod off!!! Think this is going to need recrowned and possibly threaded. Any ideas how much that would cost guys? Will have to visit the Gunsmiths on Monday.................................

    Hey John. Yeah the more I read up on this the more it makes sense. Appears the only people having issues with zero, are guys with damage to the threads/crown. I'm running a dose of copper solvent on the threads and crown at the minute, as there was a bit of a buildup on the surface of the crown. So when I've washed that off and given it a rub down with some oil, I'll take a picture of the crown and stick it up and see what you guys think. Before the mod was off, I hadn't checked the groups on paper for a while, but the bunnies didn't like the groups!! Shot a few rounds through it wi

    Moran, I think you're right! I always run the snake through the barrel at the end of a days shooting and I usually take the mod off too. I stuck the gun in the cabinet with the mod still on only twice, and in that short space of time, it was stuck on, so I didn't bother trying to remove it. Started to get worried about the crap that was in there ruining the barrel, so eventually managed to get it off and it really was PROPERLY filthy - took me the best part of an hour to get all the layers of crap out! .17HMR is a pretty dirty round!

    No, there's no washers or springs in it. It's just a generic moderator. I think it's made by Edgar Brothers, as it's not got any manufacturer branding on it, and the scope that came with the gun (CZ452) was an edgar brothers brand. Maybe the scope has taken a knock at some point when I had the gun on the bench and that's thrown the zero out. I was surprised by just how much it was off though!

    Hi guys, Recently removed the moderator off my .17HMR, as it was almost welded onto the barrel. So after much swearing and 'gentle persuation' - ahem - I took it apart and cleaned it out. It was bought second hand, and I've put over 500 rounds through it myself since then, and it was absolutely minging! Now I've screwed it back on, ive had to rezero the gun, as it was WELL off. Rounds were barely on the paper at 100yds. Just wondering why this would be. I'd assume as long as the sights weren't touched, the zero would be unaffected? Is this something I'll have to do every time I re

    Yeah I'm gonna take a trip to another local firearms dealer and try out some Hornady ammo. There is always the odd flyer (usually my dodgy shot) that might be clipping them. Will try sighting in a few different brands and then work from there. Have to say though. The 17HMR ammo really is impressive. I've had a couple of paper targets with holes almost on top of each other at 100yds on a calm day!

    Hi, Just bought myself a CZ 452 American in 17HMR. Very impressive little rifle. Unbelievably accurate right out to 150yds With the flat shooting 17HMR. Now I know different rifles favour different brands of ammo - but I was out today, reducing the local rabbit population, and found a few issues. I'm currently using CCI 20 grain gamepoint and Federal Premium 17 grain V - shock. It's all they had at the local dealers and I wanted to test a couple of brands. Both seem to produce fairly good groups (1-1.5 inches) out to 100-120 yds. If I'm hitting rabbits at 60-100yds either ro

    Thats a lovely cut of wood (pardon the pun). Is the 455 available in .17HMR, only ever seen it in WMR although I haven't checked in a while. I know they were bringing out barrels in all the rim fire calibres at some point. Did you need anything to fit both the sling and the bipod to the forward stud? I'm gonna give my old BSA 3-9 x 40 scope an extended lease of life. Haven't really shot anything beyond 50-60 yds on an air rifle, so was gonna try it out initially to see how it goes. Not the most expensive but never had any issues with it, and won't be shooting beyond about 120-150 yds

    Hi, I'm pretty new to rifle shooting. I've used an old .22 spring air gun for years, but now I'm moving on to FAC stuff, just a quick one about scopes. I'm not looking to spend a fortune at the moment, with a wedding imminent - another good man down! I've been looking at a CZ varmint in .17HMR. I was thinking of pulling the old BSA 3-9 x40 and rings off my old BSA air gun to use on the CZ. First of all, are the rings gonna fit, and is this scope good enough for effective bunny bashing out to about 120-150 yds? Sorry if this is a really stupid question, but my excuse is -

TBH with a .17HMR i shouldnt really need the .22WMR - that'll probably open a big can of worms maybe.... .22lr is absolutely fine for what I'll need, paper punching, and maybe some close range bunnies. I'm pretty much decided on a CZ varmint in .17HMR, just have to decide whether to go for the 452 or the 453, I like the idea of the set trigger, but don't think it comes screw cut for the moderator on the 453. As for the 455 I don't know a whole lot about it. From what I've read you can't go wrong with any of them.......is there's a problem, it'll be

    Hi guys and girls! New to the forum so apologies if this has been asked somewhere else already! I've just received my firearms certificate through the post. It has to go back already as they forgot to add the amount of ammunition I can hold - gives me another few days to 'persuade' the other half how important a rifle is - on top of my shotgun - ahem......... The other query I have that I've just noticed - I've got .17HMR .22 and .223 with moderators on the FAC. However what I'm not sure about is what .22 covers?
