Deerhound Greyhound Or Bedlington Greyhound Stud
roybo replied to bigjase1's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
I don't understand the 90% wastage thing ,by using a greyhound,I'd have thought the wastage comes from the other side especially if breeding 1/2 crosses -
Good point lurcher rescues have loads that are waiting for a home,if working it ain't an intention
-
There will be litters about off older bitches and some only have 1 season a year. But choose cautiously,as it's a long time to have a dog you aren't happy with. Any thoughts on a type you want?
-
My eldest lad used to come with me but never really got the bug. My youngest on the other hand ,is obsessed, and all he thinks about , Woke his mother up one morning showing her a YouTube clip of some French hounds on full cry after wild boar at 5:30am lol
-
Land dependant ,I have always like a lurcher to be 24 - 26 . My current one is 27 and I don't think there a thing the bigger lurcher can't do that a smaller lurcher can. I've heard all the "it's not the size of the dog in the fight" stuff but if both have the heart is take a bigger dog ,may as well equip a dog with the tools than relying on heart. In saying that if take a smaller dog if it had more heart.
-
It really easy to see the first litter and jump in ,make sure uts going to suit you for the next 10 years as some lads grow out if rabbit / ferreting dogs, and end up wanting more in 2 or 3 years so my advice would be take your time, maybe try and see a few run and see if you can get a type you really want
-
Good advice from mickyB be prepared to walk away, there's loads of lurchers being bred ,be prepared to wait for the right litters for you.
-
No I said they are bred not were bred for the spots and because of a film. They are bred as pets , Whether they add anything to a lurcher I wouldn't know. Would it be a breed I'd pluck out if the air to say would it make a good lurcher ,no. Not saying they wouldn't just don't know of any that do a job
-
i think they are a long way from dogs of war now, i think they are mainly bred because they have spots, and maybe because of a book/walt disney film. they were also added to bull terrier ,so they say

I feed a fair bit of heart. I think the main reason not to feed too much ,is there loads of copper in it and can deplete zinc but you'd have to feed loads over a long period. It does go through them a bit

Anyone Else Working Malinois X Greyhounds Or Similar
roybo replied to gvc's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
Just a thought gvc would it not be better to get where you want to be with the malinois cross, maybe line/inbreeding, before adding new blood? In no way a criticism just thinking that they maybe be a bit unpredictable on what you are getting and a few generations of the breeding may tell you more about what you have/want? -
Be care over supplementing with calcium ,if it has a decent diet already. It needs to be done in proportion. A few chicken wings will be plenty or a chicken back or 2. Vitamin D gets it from the gut to the body, vitamin C from the body to the bones. If it's bones are really bad get it to the vet before its too late. Have you got a photo of it ?
-
2 trains of thought are easy work early on won't hurt ,or save them til fully mature . I'm somewhere between and would rather know the dog is ready for what you let him see,but it's easy to get carried away with a keen dog and misread signs.
-
His mother was a 3/8 bull cross the other pics I put on that thread to a coursing type mate, get a photo up of yours be interesting to see how it turned out
-
I've seen it when they are over supplemented on calcium also the one bone grows much quicker than the other,be careful how calcium is given make sure other minerals are given in the right proportions as calcium doesn't work alone it needs the right balance of potassium and phosphates etc to do its job as well as vitamins d and c
-
f**k that's a lot of meat you get through Gaz. Especially the busher she'd do well on 1/2 of that ,surely
-
Some good filming there trunk ,young ones are going the right way too
-

-
Ah got you pal a nice leggy 3/8 may suit you then that's done a fair few seasons ,good luck with your search mate
-
Yeah just enjoy the dogs before you go throwing yourself in at the deep end (pardon the pun)
-

-
