Well tiger woods you ve got it off your chest now and your right i think the minute the book was mentioned the alarm bells started to ring for me as with previous books he s left himself open to some well founded flack the photo shopped photo being one of many as for a book on the younger generation of terriermen maybe they have a bit more sense and would rather have peace to dig there dogs than have a day in the limelight while lining someone else s pocket and when the limelight brings unwelcome attention its the lads that contributed that will get the grief while the benefactor lays up count

100% right Stig, what 'seems' to be the case in the terrier world is the lean toward dogs, as you said, because of 'names'. I see it more with younger lads getting into the game, its dogs only in the kennels. I think lads who have been in the game longer know the value of a good bitch and rightly so. You can have the best dog in the world but if your putting it to unproven bitches because thats all you got or can find, your a damn fool..! the value of a good tested bitch comes when you yourself want a litter from it --simple .. a good well tested bitch is prob more of an asset th

digging bitch s is a very fickle thing in this game and a lot of men would be a lot harder on dogs standard wise and give a bye ball to bitch s which i thing is not a good thing a lot of men try to breed bitch s which resemble a dog ie bit more bone size etc me included but the one thing thats common with dogs and bitch s reguardless or what size they come is that they should have the same heart to work and see job out the same as any dog should ! over the years in my experience the decent bitch s that i ve had the pleasure to dig over( not all mine ) had a brain they worked smart and were re

A good kennell set up is half the battle in producing and maintaining a good standard of dog imo i built a good set up at my home house 8 years ago and i ve just started a new kennell block at my own house will stick a few pic s up later on had the footing s and drainage all done back when i built the house so the hard work was done i ve the main kennel block built and roofed and plasterer is well away inside just have the run walls outside to do next then get outside plastered and dashed

What's The Most Digs In One Season
dee mac replied to shaneg's topic in Earthdogs & Working Terriers
a dig is a dig and the dog can only do whats put infront of them but its alawys the testing digs that stick in the memory where they were up against it and seen it through and got job done its these type of digs were the real dogs stand firm and see it out and were the bullies and want to be s come a cropper also many a good dog been molly cuddled by there owners and only dropped in places were owner knew it was a straight forward affair not the dogs fault but if give the chance they d off got job done all the same reminds me of a time we were out on an invite we d had a good morning with a fe -

i have an set of osters heavy duty clippers there a vets set i think for shaving horses cattle i think they ve been sitting in the shelve of dog kennells never used this long many a day brand new set of blades and the original set have been sharpened and they go like the clappers i bought them for clipping out a wheaten i once had but he s gone a long time now and they used to fly through him

this arguement could go back and forth all day lads the way i see it from my side is that the main place were a hpr excells is rough shooting especially later on in the year when birds are scarce they can hunt a field or bit of cover by coming in wind in there face and if there s a hit of scent then they click into gear the same place with a spaniel has to be quartered throughly at close quarters which means you have the leg work to do as well now every breed mentioned has its good points and excell in the main things they were bred to do ie lab retrieving spaniel thrashing out thick cover etc

Most Memorable Till Next Season
dee mac replied to rossthedog's topic in Earthdogs & Working Terriers
most memorable entering a young home bred dog into a very large and testing place and digging him text book down side losing his half brothe and uncle ! -
having recently aquired my first gwp after a life time of spaniels i ve had my eyes opened to the different temperments of the two breeds the gwp seems to grasp things over a shorter period which i think is due to its more layed back temperment on the flip side i find it hard to adjusts to the way he works an area ranging down wind and lifting his head to get his nostrils filled or just walking up the back of hedges having a good draw then walking on if nothing interests him were as the spaniel will have shook same hegde to its roots before passing it on were by you know nothing is at home now

had this coversation with a fella who has kept german pointers along time and he says that a even a deceent german pointer coming on a pricked bird left behind by someone else will not point it but go into pick it but if coming on a bird in exact same circumstances only with the bird being ok it will stand and point it his explanion was either dog can smell the blood or smell\sense the bird is not fully fit by the scent as we all know that when wounded any animal will produce adreninlin and who s not to know that the dogs can pick this up and then work out there dealing with a wounded bird non

i ve been asked to get a small flight pond back into a bit of shape now its fenced right round and the feeders are still in position and in good nick plus a storage bin to store there grub so far so good but its totally grown over now i got into it tonight with the chest waders and dicovered that theres like a thick raft two foot below the water that everything has sprouted up from with about two foot of clear water below it now i was thinking of a bill hook and cutting small bits and dragging them to the side but very time consuming and hard graft especially after doing a days graft someone m

no matter whats in an end it only counts as one dig in my book tho its a nice wee bonus 8 digs a year on average not a lot but you can only dig whats there also many dogs that i would class well tested could of had large amounts dug over them in there prime but from say 8 year old on they were used less often usually due to the fact lads gave the bulk of work to the younger dogs coming on and the old faithfulls only were used in time s when younger dogs layed up so the number of digs is not as constant over the older dogs but thats not of there choice and dos nt make them any less a dog as giv

try a bit of green tripe have yet to see a dog turn it down plus you only need a wee bit then once she s took to it get it mixed through her normal grub plus if it dont put a back on her nothing will tho keep her wormed regular if you do decide to go for the tripe

Hi Margaret I obviously cannot speak for Bill Beckett as to why he never mentioned us ( Lurcher,Whippet & Terrier folk ) on the radio show but im sure if you see Bill at the fair this weekend he would be more than happy to discuss it with you,but what i would like to clarify is that both Derek & Bill have always give their full support to our club when we have been organising our show at Moira Game Fair. And dee mac i do realise that some Lurcher & Terrier folk feel like they are being left out of the main fair when our show is based just on the perimeter of where the main e

i think that the lads back at the start who had terriers of brian back before the money took over had a good chance of obtaining a fair working dog these men in turn bred and worked the decent one s and done right by the failures and many are still breeding these dogs from fondation stock got many many years ago of this man are they still nuttall breed dogs? NO as the men that kept them right deserve the credit but if your looking for the type that most refer to as old nuttall type then its these lads\men you need to find and not mr nuttall as the dogs he s producing this last few years are o

as i said in my last post i think its wrong that the terrier|lurcher showing etc is outside the main show i think its all should be inside the main arena and everyone should have to pay in as we are all fieldsports people none any more important than the other but some people cant see the wood for the trees and would rather just stick to the terier lurcher area all because there saving the admission fee and to be honest the fellow on the radio was probly just right not to mention the terrier lurcher people as from the outside looking in they dont seem to want to contribute to the overall suces

while duck shooting last year an otter swam right up into the decoys coped on they were nt the real thing then paddled of unconcerned there a beautiful animal but can see were they might cause probs for fish farms rearing of duck etc but on the flip side its a sign that our river and lake systems are now a lot more healthy which is means all other aquatic life must be thriving aswell as mr otter would nt be barking into a hole with no rat in it so to speak !
