  1. well I ve shot over spaniels all my day s until I took the notion and got myself a German wire haired I got my eyes opened big style so much so I ve just bought another 12 week old bitch pup my first is just 2 year old this month and I shot over him last season and to say I was impressed is an under statement he s not the finished dog yet. But very dam close and I'm told by proper hpr people that he ll not be the real deal till he 3 year old or so will all I can say is god help the pheasant and woodcock as this lad misses nowt and if the bitch pup come as good I ll have enough dog and more for
  2. Stroller is spot on get the retrieving in early and make it enjoyable as once they get scent up there nose and there brain clicks they cover the ground like there ass is on fire my mate has a young irish red setter bitch going really well she s is small and light but has an engine I ve never seen the like off she just does not tire she will retrieve but it's a chore to her she just wants to run and hunt

  4. Cocker would be the obvious choice but in saying that we ve kept a lot of springers over the years and brother has a cocker on at the moment and I think the springer is that bit more calm when not at work the brothers cocker can't even sit without twitching and is just go go go 24/7 which is why I have nicknamed it the black whizzer lol
  5. well my second wire haired has landed an 11 week old bitch who i ve named nena she is a real wee charactor and im looking forward to training and hunting over her in the future plus for 11 weeks she is huge with a big set of feet plenty of bone and well up on her leg so fingers crossed
  6. Personally I would nt have a dog in kennels with a full tail mine get enough knocks and cuts etc without having a long tail to smash every farts end and a few seconds pain when young save s a life time of pain when there adults well seeing the clowns who think up these rules and regulation s have no experience of working dogs
  7. Time enough very young yet for heel work I would think let her be a pup for time being everything should be fun for her at this stage tennis ball sitting for her food voice recall etc and when she does good loads of praise
  8. Try and make it a game a tennis ball bounced down a hall way or entry as someone already said and you ll find she ll take a real zest in running after and trying to catch it as it bouces and rolls once she learns that she can't chase it till she brings it back got you to throw then it's a small way in getting her back to hand with her retrieving but they will test you when my wire haired was 12 months he was retrieving perfect everytime then for no reason he started acting the maggot running about and being a twat so I layers off the retrieving just a couple at end of his exercise few weeks la
  9. Just an update scooby is now 20 months old and I've had an eye opener in terms of shooting over dogs he s been a joy and took to everything like a duck to water he is really shaping up well with loads of birds pointed and shot over him his retrieving is getting better as he now clued in to what's going on with him picking several running pheasants and on woodcock he is top notch just back there now from a run out with him had 7 solid points on woodcock with him producing a bird each time I shot two one of which I just wing clipped it would of put a running pheasant to shame with the dog pickin
  10. Foxhound be fooking quiet spouting sh1t like that on net some people are so stupid it's unbelievable
  11. Not that i heard he only ever had good words for the dog it was his sire the parks bred dog that did nt make it in the end as far as i know i could be wrong ! But thats the prob with books they only tell the tale until the day they are published were as you can only comment on a dogs ability either when there gone or retired as you never know whats round the corner ! Anyway this is veered of topic thread is about parks bred dogs not the opinion of mr harcombe and his books which contents should be taken with a pinch of salt
  12. Mr harcombe used the parks bred dog he had to produce the big ron dog then slated the parks dog but if you read on big ron in turn produced more workers for him and others on down the line without any mention of the original dog and to slate a certain line of dog on his limited experience of them was childish there s good and bad in all lines and mr harcombe well knows that he s bred failures like all the rest reguardless of what blood they had in there veins
  13. that would be spot on as id say the stanley dog is having an influence on the dogs he s breeding at the moment but i always classed a parks dog as a red broken coated fell type maybe in years to come is will be red smooth dogs but id say the red fell types still out number the smooth ones at the moment i was digging with a lad last week when he pulled a little red bitch out of the terrier box i says that has parks blood in it and when he told me where she came out of i was spot on she s not much to look at but i soon started to like her once we had dug her a fearless lttle tyke with a heart l
  14. One of the few well know terrier men who keeps himself to himself and cares more for his dogs than fame money or rosettes he breeds for work some work some dont same as all the rest and i dont own a parks dog or ever did but thats the impression i get of the man
  15. Decisions should never be made in the field as said costs nothing to try again if you find yourself thinking this is it go home put dog in kennell get your dinner relax go to bed if you still think strongly the next day then your thinking with clear head and then yes do what you have to do but a rash move in heat of the moment or out of bravado is stupid its a decision that has to be made time and time again in the digging game
  16. maybe someone touched on it there hormones i had a few weeks of it with my gwp dog were by he was a complete menace then i walked him out on the lead give him a free run for 10 or 15 mins to empty run about then when he looked for me as in he wanted to come to me or interact i then put whistle in mouth and dropped him walked out pat on the head cast him off then got into retrieving staying just the basic s and he settled back into his stride tho the big test will soon be upon us were by he be introduced to ground hold plenty of birds and the head scratching and hair pulling could start all ove
  17. Barryvox element and b and f collar bang on every time
  18. first morning then evening time again then most evenings lucky have a decent lake right beside me
  19. anyone try the meindl taiga gtx i have had the dovre gtx for 4 seasons now used for digging only and still going strong only prob the sponge bit between the two soles is fooked having looked at the taiga they look to have a solid sole which would cure the prob would like to hear some views
  20. Everyone has an opinion voon but you breed to get workers and you only breed dogs that work is the way i see it as for the addition of bull blood into working strains im not a fan yes years ago it may have been needed and some of the good terriermen added it in but knew what they were doing and had a plan at this stage with the dogs that are about today i think bull blood is not the way to go the good line s of dogs are hard enough with out adding more blind hardness not to mention bad coats etc if you dog is lacking work wise no amount of bull blood will change that and as you said down your
  21. Voon thats a very navie statement men doing regular digging will put a steady dog before a hard dog everyday of the week for obvious reason s now people s version of hard varies a steady digging dog that know s his trade will get knocked about as there ll be time s when pressure is on they ll have to stand firm but the dog that run s in takes a hold at every chance is going to take grief that it could of avoided and be lay d up for weeks as for this oh i like a hard dog i do hear regular i suspect half the people saying this have never owned a proper hard dog there a full time job for a limite
  22. think its explained in his first post gene pool very small and not enough dogs that are plummers getting enough proper work if a few more thought like wm there be a lot more plummer types underground getting proper work
  23. the dog was used by lads on the reputation that he earned through his work not on what they thought his make up was and there s lots of dogs with his name in there peds with most of them being in kennells where work comes first not because he was chocolate or he had white dogs in his back ground another dog that left a mark on the terriers we have today was said to be half spaniel he was a serious dog to work from the accounts i ve read and covered many bitches the wannibies of today would of got some fright when told that if inquiring about a service eh lol
  24. 4 dogs in one run 3 of which are terrier s your playing with fire there lucky man pup was nt dead
