  1. Just in the capitol area in Helsinki there is estimated 14 000 "city rabbits" that cost the city est. 500 000 € worth in damages/ year. You can't use poison or guns in the heavily populated areas like parks, so ferrets are the perfect solution! There is only hand full of people who know how to hunt with ferrets and get a nice salary from the city.
  2. In my case pedigree is just the names, colours and birthdates for parents and grandparents. In Finland there is only show ferrets and I am the first to breed even remotely hunting type ferrets. Finnish ferrets are all Russian and East-Europe lines so the hobs are HUGE. Normal hob around here is around 2,5 kg to 3,5 kg (5,5 lbs to 7,7 lbs). Try fitting that into a rabbit hole.. Thank you all for the tips, I'll definitely will give Rakeabout a call!
  3. Hey all, I'm a ferret breeder from Finland and I'm looking for some new blood. It is bit tricky thou because I'm looking for standard line, good temper, not at all or as little as possible polecat and a short pedigree (name, colour and birthday) of parents and grandparents. We are desperate for good new hobs in here, so I would really appreciate help! I'm planning on coming to UK later this year so the kitts doesn't even need to be born yet! If you know any good breeders or are in fact yourself one please give me a message. Also I would love on the same trip to come and learn hunting with fe
  4. I have no idea how much could you get for a rabbit. I'll have to find out.
  5. Where did you get her and do you have any ideas is there going to be new litters?
  6. She is a beautiful dog! I'm just hoping I could find something just as great!
  7. gareth_daniel : I realized that myself also just before you said it x) Good recall and wits you can spot from a dog quite early on, but other stuff will be left for me of course. The pup needs papers and vaccinations and so on, so it will be bit older when I come to pick it up. In that time a good breeder can spot the best suiting dog for my needs. I'm planning on coming over to get them by car, trough Sveden and Norway. It'll be my vacation roadtrip at the same time. Also hunting is not the only thing I do with the dog, so I would not see the size as a such a big issue. I just like bi
  8. The prizes are astronomical, but the buyers are also very picky. A standard line pet ferret cost you last year 350 € (about 280£), black ferrets and angora over 400 € Don't choke on you lunch ladies and gentlemen..
  9. I'm not even going to tell you guys what a well bred ferrets cost in here, but If anyone would offer you one with that price, you would either laugh your asses off, or shoot the poor salesman to euthanize him, because he is clearly suffering from some horrid mental illness.
  10. The size is just the only little vanity I have. I love my dogs big, anything under 50cm (19,5 inches) is a squirrel not a dog.
  11. lapin2008: I understand you completely, but you should see the state of the ferrets we have here. People take them and think they are totally untrainable wild animals with streedcredit and exotic value. Most don't bother to train their pets not to bite, or just plain can't, for some reason or other. They are still kept inside the house and let do what they want. There are some people who take their time and properly handle their animals and are persecuted of ruining the image of these wild animals for all the other ferret owners.. TOMO: Cheers! We do have a serious rabbit problem in south
  12. Coursing has not been banned completely and with proper permissions it is ok. Winters are cold, I give you that, but we do have greyhounds and whippets and they are just as thin coated. The problem in Finland is that we have this obsession of "pure breed" and I can't stand it. Every thing has to bee pure bred something, or it is nothing. I'm fighting to correct this and to show people that mutts are just as good. I love sight hounds for their grace and speed, but I want also a dog that has brains and will to please and learn. I don't want just a runner, or just a sheepdog/sircus pig, when
  13. They had similar tests than dogs and cats. They tested handling, reaction to sudden sounds, new people, other animals and of course: do they bite. Para and Domovoi have grown up with cats and dogs in the house, so they ignore other animals, or try to play with them. They are aware, but not afraid of sounds if they are being held. They trust almost blindly on the people handling them, but they don't like to be taken too far away from me. They have the habit of running back if taken out of sight. They don't bite anyone, no matter how badly they are held, they just grab on with their claws if eve
  14. That was the plan, but I have no place for the dog until next year. I'm looking for a a pup, not an adult!
  15. Hi, Have you guys ever heard of therapy ferrets? I'm just curious. Are my two hobs the only ones or is there more somewhere? Para is my breeding hob, a 3 year old albino and Domovoi is his son, implanted, 2 year old black sable. They were tested as therapy animals last week and passed the test with flying colours. Don't be fooled thou! They are skilled hunters with good instincts, but they are still kind enough for kids and elderly to handle. They won't bite and they sleep in bed with me (spoiled rotten, I know). Ferrets seem to inherit temper strongly, so I'm working on breeding m
  16. Hi all, I'm interested on finding myself a nicely bred lurcher bitch for next (late)spring / summer. I'm really looking for a fast, stock- and ferret broken bitch with brains and a good recall. The breeds I'm really interested in are deerhound, greyhound and collie. The appearance, color and things like that are secondary at best. I'd love to have a irish wolfhound sized dog, but that is, as said, secondary. I'm aiming at intelligence, good recall, good temper and enough sense to not eat my two dog friendly ferrets. The dog will be used for running, as a companion-dog and if she is go
  17. Mine are named after Finnish house spirits or elves. Para, the wife's scary helper, Domovoi, the happy little luck bringer and Hittavainen, the rabbit-killer.
  18. He would be just perfect mix for me, but getting him to Finland would be quite a job. He looks just gorgeous.
  19. Thanks for your replies. I appreciate the comments and tips! Lurchers in Finland: There are no real lurchers in Finland! Only few accident litters, but here it's all purebreeds. I'm myself more of an workdog person and I don't care about the breed as long as the dog does it's job good. Rabbits: we have more rabbits than you can shake a fist to, but rabbiting with dog is illegal, ferreting is ok! The dog would be used mostly for rats if any. Races: racing is just for fun and to give the dog something really fun to do. I don't mid loosing if the dog will return to me on command. In here 98
  20. Hey guys, I'm researching for my first lurcher mix for next year and I was wondering does anyone have any experience on collie/grey X collie mixes? As you have probably guessed, I love the speed and beauty of a sighthound, but have a problem with their cat like attitude and might I say it, dumbness. Then again, collies are great. I adore the smarts and the willingness to work, but I can't stand the over- energetic neuritics of a purebred collie. That is why I am so much in love with lurchers. I would like the dog to be fast and smart, I'm going to be racing with her and she will h
  21. Hey everybody and greetings from Scandinavia. I heard that this forum is a good place to get connected with the right people, to make my future dreams come true. My first ferret came to me 3 years ago and from the start I wanted to hunt with him. Para and later on his son Domovoi are excellent hunters but they have mostly been used for ratting. They have good instincts and they are very easy to handle. 2012 I became a official ferret breeder and the first to start a line of working ferrets. 2010 I spent 2 month working on a farm in Tatton park, near Manchester and there I met my first l
