There was a case in Hampshire dec 2012 girl had 2 working cockers stolen she has had a pet detective on the case and put a reward up and bless her in 12 months she never gave up, and as the anniversary came and went there was a raid on a farm in Kent where cock fighting, badger baiting, and at the farm was a load of stolen dogs. After checking microchip they reunited the owner with the dog 13 months later. Turns out the dog had a litter of pups whilst it had been away, so someone has a pup and if there is paperwork it will be forged or someone has a w/ cocker without paperwork. I real

That's a shame, got to get up early to beat Rich

But be aware you don't give in, they learn very quickly. The dog barks - you give it bone - the dog eats said bone- dog barks- you give bone. It connect barking with a reward, what does dog do when he wants a bone??? Encourage the word quiet loud harsh voice, every time it barked shout quiet. When I was in hunt service if a single hound barked we would go in and throw water over them whilst shouting quiet. After a while just the word worked

We don't teach dogs to hunt or retrieve, we fine tune their natural instinct keep at the fine tuning and enjoy sounds like you have a good un.

The reason treat training is a big no no is your giving him a choice. Your saying if you sit I will give you food. So he will sit as he wants food, your out in a park and he goes to run off you say heel or blow whistle he has the same choice do I stay for food or do I go and see the dog? And the other dog will win most times over food, what if running off is always his choice and crosses a road to see another dog. Your problem will come harder when you want the dog back, mine comes back from wherever he is as he is told to. When he comes back he sits and I make a fuss that's his reward.

Hi James Your going in the right direction I would suggest you have a look about for gun dog training classes, that way they will guide you in the right direction. Going after a pheasant isn't a bad thing, if you read the books they say when a bird takes off or a rabbit runs you teach your dog to sit, yes I can see this as you don't want to shoot a dog, but horses for courses I want mine to chase I encourage it, it's not right it's not wrong but it's what I want. At all times your training should be close, don't let the dog run too far, the word steady as they reach the 20 yd ma

Reading your original post there are a few clues as well. We went to training classes... So you don't now... You have a working machine that your not working, started to do what he was bred for and stopped Sounds like he is bored to me.

Hi James Couple of points. If you have a dog that chases sheep, do you, A, take him in a field of sheep B, keep him away from sheep so he can't chase them? This will split the group as the answer is to take him in a field of sheep and do your training. So by only letting him off lead on a beach or alone is ok but what if another dog appears on a beach. Forget the collar and newspaper that is lazy mans punishment training. Being firm is one thing but there is a thin line between firm and a scared dog. So on your own like we have said many times and read back on here a few art

What it's all about

Grass, round here they eat loads of the stuff

I wouldn't use a tennis ball at this stage, its soft and they can bite it, its not that its soft that makes them bite it its the fact its soft but biteable and gives as they bite, some say it by doing the biting motion they could develop jaw muscles as they roll things like that in the mouth and chew, and later in life they say they do it to game. if you go to places like pets at home they do toys they have no stuffing and a squeak in, remove the squeak and "play" with that. I use the word play as that's what it is its educated play, if as mentioned on here thousands of times you have do

Hi Guys Being an old man or getting that way, I've just come back from 2 weeks in the sun and before I went I had an eye test and was told I should have reading glasses and a set for long range use/driving. Now I collected these yesterday and they are ok but having never had them before I have this question for my fellow olde'ns, do I need to wear them with a scope or does the scope make the arrangements through adjustments. it is funny I can see well and can still see a deer at 300 yds but not the newspaper in front of me

Basic training is done on walks then put into practice on the field, if you walk your dog and he runs to far and you allow it then there is your issue, I use the word "steady" . On a walk in a wood and away from roads walk in a line then change direction, but don't tell the dog, make a small fuss of him and do it many times, he will learn to watch you a bit more, hide behind a tree as well. Then in an open field let the dog run and if he gets too far use the command steady and call him back. Play with a bit and use the direction change with a small whistle it's teaching the dog to look

Sorry to hear this, I would be devastated if my boy was stolen, this crime is becoming more popular I do think we should do something to get this crime as a higher punishment. We treat our dogs like one of the family and yet the punishment is pathetic. 50% of dogs stolen are gun dogs and what do they do with them, do people buy working dogs off a Del Boy I know I wouldn't and most on here but who does or is it they force papers and say bulshat just to sell them. We do need more action bring back hanging that will stop em If you get any leads let us know I'm sure we will all hel

In an ideal world you need pheasants in a pen most good gun dog training places have one it's the best way to start them off.

Good that your getting some action there, I've seen more this yr than I did at same time don't know what your thoughts are but I've seen a lot of small doe's not this yrs last yr born but haven't grown a lot. looking at those sticks reminds me I've got to give up on them, I buy the cheap ones but Monday this week I took delivery of a new 27 inch bi pod a camo shirt and expensive set of sticks, being expensive I thought I would look after them. Here we are it's Friday and I'm the person who thought tonight when he cleared his jeep where are the new sticks.
