stand in a corner. you did right not to tell him off that will confuse and scare. Dont do too much on retrieves spend the time on sit and stay, and whistle to sit. the dog will retrive you do not need to teach that, but use that skill to work for you, if you throw and he runs off on auto pilot, later you have to stop this, so dont start it to save you stopping it. if you do the basics sit, stay then walk away, ideally you want to walk round him in a 10 meter circle and dont always call him after he sits he will be waiting for you to call him, to start with make him sit, walk sid

So what happens when the dog is in a wood and comes across wire? You can hide these things from them but your better off teaching them to jump, it is a hazard either way, it's like when a dog gets caught behind any form of fence, you either leave them which teaches them to find their own way. Or you go back for them which teaches them to wait. This is ok you have to decide what you want your dog to do. As a tip and I'm sure you all know it but if ever a dog is caught up between 2 strands of wire don't try to untangle grab the front end and throw them back over the fence, dependant on the

So that must have been around 8 am, at that time I was laying between 2 fallen trees in dry conditions from 7 am in a popular spot of mine, a few flakes of snow dropped as I lay there. The south east wind was nipping and my eyes watering, the gun was loaded and resting next to me on it's bipod and I was facing the snow that was now quite hard now blowing at me, no sign of deer and I was getting cold as I spotted a fox at 150 yards. Thinking ok no deer will take the fox I moved the rifle across me. Needless to say I didn't shoot. Moral of this story when you buy an expensive scope, in m

Young dogs 1st!!!! an my first solo dig
Philluk replied to hard grafter's topic in Earthdogs & Working Terriers
why? why? Because if the terrier's getting knocked up & not getting his ''Game/trophy'' afterwards he might end up walking. as much work as you can [easy earth's] & reward him with the game when finished, good luck with your terrier. I have been digging now for a good many years and I have never heard such bull in all my life !!! I never kill any game unless directed by the farmer or land owner and as for your so called reward is it not reward enough to dig to your dog if the dog is right he/she will not come away after any digs. Sorry for the rant Hard grafter well -
Treats are a big no in the working training world, im sure someone will come along and say ive done it and it works. Think of yourself as a child your mum says come here and you get a sweet, you do it all the time just for the sweet. then your mum says come here and someone else says come here ive got a nice rabbit you can hold (or chase/smell) you know what you will get if you go to mum but the rabbit is so much better so thats your choice, you can get a sweet at any time. dogs do because they are taught that is what you will do if I tell you cause you want to please me. its called bondin

Let's hope the 2 in Hampshire are returned safe and well

Yep we agree Casso but there is still no harm in playing and training, you make your pup sit a feeding time we agree, nothing wrong with saying sit then pip the whistle, as I walk to my local park I make him sit at each road crossing, each time I say sit and blow once, then i just stop, he sits, I blow he sits, I've never raised so much as a finger to him it's all voice based. I did get close out shooting today I made him sit and I walked to a fox hole with the terrier and he crept forward. It's all about fun and let the dog take in as much as he can but as long as it's fun keep it goin

I've 2 books to sell Gun dogs training and field trials PRA Moxon The complete gun dog training manual James Douglas £10 each

Nothing wrong with doing both, if you let bad habits form as a puppy you will spend a ling time as he matures getting him out of them. Put his food down make him sit, don't let him have it until you told him to. As a pup you can play down the field and train. I on an earlier post said before I let my pup as a pup run after squirrels down the road when we go for a walk, I had the.. He is only a puppy. Now I struggle to stop him doing the same thing daily, his ears are up the heel goes to rat, all because I let him be a pup.

Don't worry, don't shout at him, don't let it do your head in. He is just shy lacks confidence won't be long until your shouting cause he has run off. As you walk along try to use places he knows, and just stop and make a fuss of him it will come. I take it the terriers don't have a go at him, you may want to spend one on one time, find a quiet spot sit and play with him. It will come be patient

Just out of interest are you classing cocker spaniels and working cockers in the same group here? Dogs are like kids some good some bad, some are clever some stupid, but deep down no matter what you have we love em! My poor bu@@er is asleep next to me on the sofa as I type this, we have had a busy couple of days, I've 4 deer hanging outside, 3 foxes buried in 2 days of shooting and tomorrow is pheasant day on the syndicate I'm in. He has been with me through all that, Then he has a couple of days off boating. Ps he will be 10 months old in 2 weeks.

springer dosent like carrying game help!
Philluk replied to GEOFF.223's topic in Gundogs & Retrievers
There is some good stuff here and I for one agree with Kev start early, master one and move on. I have a fully trained gun dog at 8 months old, when I say fully trained he hunts retrieves not quite to hand but drops it in front of me whether it's feather or rabbit, swims the lot. I have to master the to hand bit and directions back is done I'm on left right now. I got a 15 month ESS in Nov and she has done very little the pup learnt sit, stay, come, very quick very young I'm struggling with the new one to master sit and stay as I walk away as she is set in her ways. Let a pup be a pup -
When I was in hunting and we had to give a hound a tablet you put it at the back of his throat and stand on his foot when he yelled he swallowed, Must try that with the mrs.

Simple. Cocktail sausages they come in packs of 50 really cheap cut the end off and eat it, or give it to the dog as a taster. Then push the tablet into the middle works every time. I had a JR who had serious heart problem was on 6 tablets a day, we called it tablet time and never had an issue as it's soft doesn't break up and they love them. Most supermarkets sell them. I would like to point out I have no connection to them and other products on the Market are just as good......

I have both and there are advantages to both, the cocker I had at 15 weeks and we have that special bond, he wants to please me. I also have a third hand springer. Both work both good but the one I had from a pup is better and I like the fact he does things to please.. But the ess is coming on a treat, I was lucky and found a star. Part trained is ok if you know exactly what buttons you press so to speak. But I would go for a pup, it's rare anyone gets rid of a good dog unless there is a good reason. Would I sell my cocker nope unless it was stupid money, yes a pup can be a p

I see what your saying, I've never used treats as any form of training it's all been him wanting to please me, and fun, games we played, he surprised me out shooting on wed someone dropped a hen and I marked where it landed, when I got there I searched and he didn't find it so I got someone with a experienced dog to search the area, he didn't find it either. I walked along the path and 50m he picked up scent went into the waters edge where a lump of branches had his interest and he went in, hen came out jumped in the water closely followed by my dog who caught it and brought it to me.
