Interesting you say that, I got a call early Aug for a roe doe that was hit by a car, I've been out many times and seen it but never a safe shot, the farmer txt last night and I had a safe shot and watched her for a bit and although very lame and thin was alive and well so have left her, didn't look like was suffering in my opinion. Was out at 6 this morning watched several deer and took a couple of doe's thought a lot of thin ones in the group. Planned for a few weeks to go this afternoon to a farm unfortunately after a call to the owner to inform them my best place was going to be vi

How did those who went out today do?

Treats: lets be clear there is a small place for training with treats but not in the field these are my reasons - if you use treats you are saying here is a biscuit, if you do this you will get this. so the dog has 2 choices do it and get a treat or don't do it, the dog may not want the treat, or what the dog is doing is better than the treat. If you say to a dog fetch this and you will get a treat the dog will do it for the treat he will go fetch and spit it out expecting the treat. Now there could be a place in the home where you want to teach a trick or useful command, when im o

Have to say he is sort of right, kennelled dogs are better, but before you snap my head off, I only mean for field trials they are only focused on work there is no play, out of kennel work or training and back in a kennel. It's not much of a life, unless it's done by professionals who take them out for a few hours a day. I'm not saying yours or mine, and right now I'm sat on the sofa on iPad springer is laying on her back to my right, the work cock is on the rug by fish tank, but I've just come back from setting up my new nv scope and washed his feet so he not allowed on sofa. Be int

some good points above but be aware of body language there was a good point when someone wrote about fireworks and how we react and dogs pick up on it. again I will repeat what I have put on here many times about stages. does the dog on whistle: sit - stay - recall? on the recall does the dog come to you? if your thinking then the answer is no - make the dog sit with whistle in mouth walk 20 paces away keep your back to the dog blow recall turn head slightly so you can see out of the corner of your eye if she is coming turn round and ensure the dog comes to you and sits just in front o

I have head that as well but a few weeks would not be long enough, but if its summer put it somewhere as the maggots will do a very good job for you.

I thought I would add to this subject rather than start a new one as its sort of relevant. After a battering overnight from the storms I was out early this morning with my chainsaw to see if I could help out, it proved useful (see my thread) I was told I was a very nice guy by a farmer, I didn't hound him that will come. I moved a few other branches from land I currently shoot just makes me that nice guy and keeps in with farmers its good to help them occasionally. Then came home and had an early lunch and went to walk the land I gained last week, saw some nice deer and a big white st

I've often wondered if anyone listened to that now I know.

Seems as good as any, I've not long come from 7 hours of shooting my dogs won't move if one want off under him. Anything to keep him occupied, my last terrier used to come to a fireworks eve as I worked at one during the display I played ball with him and he was fine.

A Complicated Thing Buying One Of These
Philluk replied to Philluk's topic in Night Vision & Thermal
Thanks -
In the past I have been criticised by some people especially by a certain guy who runs another website for Stalking as I knock on doors of farmers and upsetting him or his mates as one wood was close to his and as he charges people £75 a day to shoot deer in an area that backs on to my wood. (and then lies about it) For those who do not have their own land with this strong wind coming in there will be damage and you can go out and help farmers it could be a good way to a bit of land and here is an example. I shoot a lot of land and when I get one farm I always go and see the next doo

About a month ago I read an article on here and watched a couple of YouTube vids and thought seems a good thought I've a few places I can creep about rather than the powerful lamp I use now. So I thought buy a night vision scope, now I did this about 18 yrs ago and had something mounted on my gun written in Russian and the size of a camera the bbc used to film top of the pops. Now I'm not the iPod using latest mob phone person I can type with one finger and I know my place in the field is as good as it gets but my place with NV is nil. I have a spare .22 semi that I would like t

what did you tie the roes down with on the roof rack?????

I agree with all above the safety is the most important issue, you can shoot deer from one which in some places is deemed a no go area, and I have just confirmed this with a new chunk of land, its only 5 fields but the wood behind these fields is full of dog walkers all day long so the deer lay in the middle of these fields and go into the wood of an evening. I can get close to them but the wood would be my back stop, I have put a temporary high seat up and will go in there one morning next 2 weeks and when they come to lay down I will get a safe shot. but to use a high seat you must appr

Then you tick all boxes let the fun begin. Re your last post if possible get a pedigree only as you may want to breed at some point

Ok here goes the spanner: what do you want the dog to do ie why do you want a dog? when you say out in the jeep with me - is this i'm at work all day as a builder and he will be shut in the car all day? then he will stay in the kennel spaniels are little working machines now that doesn't mean 3 hours walking a day and 3 shoots a week like mine gets that is over the top, but then I have fit dogs, but my original question what do you want it to do? if its field trials then its focus come out - training goes back in kennel - several times a day. if its a gun dog then it can

very simple, you need 2 things - time and patience As a pup they want to be with you but they like the smells and to date have not connected the two, never tell her to go in a wood in a harsh voice, just send her in encourage her and when she comes out don't worry, praise when in, say nothing when out, as they get older and they learn that's what they are supposed to do, it will come, go to areas where you can see her work, marshes are great for this as scent holds. some on here say you should not start a dog until he is 12 months old, I had my 7 month working cocker out on pheasants

I don't do these write up's very often but thought this was worth it. A few weeks ago I put a new high seat up on land I've shot for a while, I have a hide in the corner but the farmer has just planted crops so thought it would be attractive, I angled the high seat at a wood I also shoot and if we say the sitting facing forward position on the high seat is 12 o'clock. I arrived at the land after taking the dogs rabbiting for the afternoon and meeting the wife to swap around and she drove off with dogs and left me to the deer, I was in her jeep and the binos, my hat, gloves, and face c

what about a nice open fire?

If you look at the reply I put to the how young should I start issue there is a clue, as in the dog can see you and is happy to carry on, you see some people with a badly trained dog trying to catch it walking at it, don't walk at it walk the opposite way, your dog hears you and carry's on, what you say is not that important its the fact you say something and she is not coming back she knows where you are, so game time. Go into the middle of a big wood and do some training make fuss let off lead call her to you etc then give her freedom walk for 2 - 3 mins in a straight line say north, th

actually there is nothing wrong with a bit of encouragement, sometimes you can teach a dog to work around you and when in cover how does he know where you are. As an ex huntsman when you draw a cover you make noise it does several things, it lets the dog know where you are, it will make him work around you in the case of changing direction, if you don't say a word he could come out to you to see where you are, so sending him on is ok, your voice will keep him working to let him know your there, a hunting horn is an extension of the huntsmans voice. also if your flushing to guns, any noise wi

welcome back to the real world. I decided last week to bring my quad back into play, walked up a small field saw a few deer watched them for 20 mins before txt ing a mate "do you want a fallow?" yes came back the vibrate in my pocket. 180 yds I walked to him to drag it back 180 yds plus the 200yds I walked to get to where I was. you have my sympathy Rich, its alright for you "young uns"
