  1. hows them jills doing? my albino i kept back is a little cracker.
  2. What about a pair of dogs? Could size have beeen brought down maybe, with a catch dog and a kill dog? I know people like dogs to do single handed etc but would two smaller dogs be less conspicuous as deer dogs? What's your views? Cheers
  3. Give it a month and there will be loads of cupboard chewers kicking about.
  4. did you see the one about the fishermen in slantyland? the bloke free dives for 7mins or something, maintains neutral buoyancy and walks across the seabed wi a spear gun. some of the best footage iv ever seen, it is unreal. there kids see better underwater than on land....evolution lol. cheers
  5. i saw that documentary sesku, was human planet with david attenbrough. i also saw a couple of years ago some bloke monitoring eagles in scotland, they had the cameras there and it tried to run a red deer off a cliff. the bloke said in 40 years he had never seen them do that. cheers
  6. Guna have to have a rethink, she retrieved a couple of times then decided to eat the skin. Need to dry one out I think. Reverted to her stuffed toy and she retrieved perfectly. Can't wait for her knee to heel and get her back out. Cheers.
  7. Her recall is great bird at 14months it should be, its just the prey fetch we've struggled with, ball, toys etc no problem. Want to make a dummy to see if this makes a difference. With it being rabbit skin I know she will play with it 1st. Guna give it a go now I'll let you know her reaction and how we get on.cheers all
  8. How do you make them? What do you use to stuff them? Does the skin need to dried or can a fresh skin be used. As the dog is not guna be running for a few weeks I'm going to do some work on her retrieving. Cheers
  9. Yeah idiosynchrosies will definitely be there but the basics are surely the same? I can't speak from experience as I'm on dog number 1. A few old boys hav told me that. Cheers
  10. I was told your first dog is your best dog, on the basis that it will teach you more than any dog after. Perfection as we know doesn't exist. Cheers
  11. i just think its down to modern times tho the need to move, guard stock over long distances(as well as put food on table) isnt there. the best base for this kind of dog could well be in another place where this is still a neccessity. i'll stick to me bitza and do what we can. cheers
  12. its common sense that a pack animal wants to be with its pack, the bond is always going to be stronger with time spent together and understanding back and forth between man and dog is greater. my pup would rather come out in the car and sit and wait there than be left in the house. some of the people in days of old were poachers, doing little else but making there money and livelihood through there skills and dogs when there was a steady market for the meat and game they could supply, nowadays that just isnt an option, however much we wish it was. cheers
  13. thats a handy trait , i can see where that might come in useful lol
  14. Not being disrespectful, but speak for yourself. Not everyone is in your boat, my dogs are trained as good as any are and have been. thats fair enough mate my other thought had been about collies, with there trainability..... yes they can be trained to do exceptional things but... the majority are'nt as owners do not have the time to do extraordinary training... sit, stay, jump through hoop etc all easy to train. im not saying it would be impossible, but for the average bloke who works, has family etc where does the time come from? in what way are yours trained if they are as good a
  15. those were 24/7 dogs tho were'nt they. im almost certain that if we worked the same ways as those days then the training would be ingrained as much as trained. i know that im at work all day/week plus with other commitments means that the dog gets a good amount of time but not all of it so training is down to the few hours a day i have for her. in days of old the dog would be everywhere with you, with no cars on the roads it could walk beside you wherever you went. times change, people change and so therefore does everything. i love the idea of one of the dogs of old but as far as training it
  16. nicky im literally along the road and used to work with you. chef?? pm me as i would hav a look out wi you aswel if u wanted. cheers
  17. I'd consider a whippet for ferreting, take off speed isn't as good wi my lurcher. Lamping I'd say my bitch is better in the field maybe a whippet would be better for the ones on the boundaries? Limited runs with whippet iv never seen my lurcher tired (relative). I'd like a whip as 2nd dog for ferreting but atm not possible.gutted Can't do anything atm anyway as my pup is healing. Cheers
  18. i do with my older dog, but can work him of the slip ,so suppose dont need the collar on all the while, not had a collar on my pup yet , so prob work with out one when he is older , just use a rope lead with him for now,but most times he is loose . i use a collar and stick rope under it for easy slip when out with my mate. if im out alone i tend to just walk wi her off slip no collar as i get sick of being pulled about and she will walk pretty much by me. the amount of times i hear get 'back here' when my mates dog shrugs outa the slip thats just looped round the neck!!! id prefer
  19. do you lads run dogs with or without collars? cheers
  20. Sometimes the punishment is worth the crime. I had a sheep farm on my doorstep I walked for a year when I first got pup. She was fine up until around the same age, she chased sheep 3 times.never wanted to tackle 1 just enjoyed the chasing.twice it was a stubborn ewe who would not move from a gate. Each time she did it I really beat her, not that I advocate it but needed to be done. I did not leash her going through them just kept a constant verbal warning. After 3 lashings she never looked at them again.I was lucky as I spoke to the farm family almost daily and had an unspoken agreement, I tol
  21. Not exactly true. My Bull x bitch has very little coat but has skin like a Rhino and tears very little. Rough coats deflect hazards, but don't stop skin from tearing. thats what i was asking in initial post, i thought the bull cross would have a thicker skin along with other breeds maybe. doesnt help the fact mine has skin like paper and coat like paint.
