  1. Having trouble getting this one resized.
  2. Been scouting fields all week but with the changeable weather and full moon they've been anything but dependable. Checked one of my fields on Monday and there was 200+ on it, checked it again Tuesday 150 on it, again on Wednesday not a goose to be seen. Found out the farmer had put them off. Thursday there was about 50 back so I got talking to him and told him to leave them alone if they were on it Friday so we could decoy it on Saturday morning. My shooting partner checked it Friday morning and there was no geese on it at 12 o'clock. Went back at 3 o' clock and there was 150 on it. By the t
  3. Canadas and greylags to 50+ yards. We've been shooting them every bit as dead as we ever did with 56gram loads and every bit as far away. Just in now. Had 23 canadas this morning all shot with 36 gram loads. Full choke shoot them in the head and neck. I'll do up a post now. Have some good photos.
  4. Where are you located. If you can shoot lead B&P 36g 6s will kill geese further away then you care to fire at them. Putting it in the right spot is more important then load or shot size. For years I spent a fortune on 56g 2s and 3s because I was convinced I wouldn't toss them with less. This past 2 seasons I haven't fired anything other then 36g loads at them and i'm killing them as well as ever. Atb Mark.
  5. Yep dried dog foods the job. Scatter it out well. Keeps them hunting about for it.
  6. If you can get to where the geese want to feed you can shoot all the geese you'd ever want with no calls or decoys. Decoys will help to pull the geese to where you need them (ie close to cover for hides) calls help to fill out the picture and make the scene more realistic but if you don't no where the geese want to be your wasting your time. At times geese are very vocal and at other times they wont make a sound, this can give you a good idea as to how settled they are where they are feeding, vocal geese are happy geese. Geese make a huge array of honks moans and clucks. Although early in t
  7. The easiest to use are flute calls but you'll be very limited in the sounds you can make. There are thousands of short reeds on the market now and if you learn how to blow them they will all do the job. Polycarbonate (moulded plastic) or wooden calls are the cheapest. Acrylic calls are hard turned and cost much more but they do have a very sharp crack to them. For my money Zinc PC1, Buck Gardner honker hammer, Primos honkey tonk are all worth a go.Atb Mark
  8. There's no saying whether they will or wont, the only thing that knows that is the geese. Keep your eyes on it. They mightn't touch it or you mightn't be able to get them shot off it. It's just the way they are. There's fields round me that hold geese every year and there's fields beside them twice the size with better feeding and just as quiet and you wouldn't see a goose on them from one years end to the next. Strange birds!! Atb Mark

Same here. You'd have to do gather all day for 2lbs.
  10. Thanks and welcome to the site. I'm waiting for a few migrants myself. No pinks here though unfortunately.
  11. Send the pinks down to me I'll take care of them for you. I could even send up a few hundred canadas in exchange.
  12. Try to find where the geese are feeding and roosting. Always remember birds land into the wind so if wind direction is different to the night before they may change there flight path. If you can find where there feeding and get yourself a few decoys you'll get twice the sport, especially if they come in small bunches. Atb Mark
  13. Good strong lookin dog. All you need nows a few geese to give him a real tester! Were just in now. out since 4:30 this mornin. Hard going. Only 4 canadas and 4 divers but had another fella out with us and got him his first goose so he was happy. Atb Mark
  14. Can't tell you the exact breeding, he belongs to the guy i shoot with. Bought him from a guy from Mallen head Co Donegal. He's a good strong worker.
  15. Ive seen them plucked wet to get the down off them but i pluck till i get most of the down off dry then give them a wee run of a blow lamp, not long enough to burn the skin just long enough to burn the down. Then give them a wash. Ps for the next month ducks generally aren't worth plucking because of all the pen feathers, i'd just breast them.
  16. Yeah we built it up this summer from an old cabin boat we got for free. It was sitting in a local marina and didn't get bailed out all winter and sank. Then they tried to lift her out with a forklift, and tied a the strap round the cabin. Clever plan!! When it came to the top of the water the cabin broke but they got her dragged out. Shes looking a bit sparce of cover today. Ment to add abit to her yesterday evenin but I ended up working late. Do grand the way she is for divers and canadas but you'd need it covered in more on top for mallard and greylags.
  17. Left him at the house in-case you came down to lift him!
  18. Went out this mornin at half 4. Set up the diver decoys and waited till about 11. Seen piles of ducks but we just weren't on the X. Managed to turn in one flock of divers and took 3 out it. We picked up decoys and moved at 11 to try to find where the divers were feeding. Picked another spot where there was divers feeding but they never came back. Managed to pull a pair of canadas though. More homework needed before next Saturday!! Anyone else out today?
  19. I have it on my auto. Great job. I'll post up a photo later. no shine and it keeps her from getting marked. takes a while to put on right though.Atb Mark
  20. Yep i agree with that. Movements the key to decoying anything. A few shells and a few bouncers then build your pattern up with dead birds as you go. Atb Mark
  21. Well done boys. Keep at em! You done better then me this evenin. Sat at the side of the lough all night. Never got a shot!
