Times running out now, only one weekend left. Managed a good doo at the divers last Saturday although the wind was completely wrong for us we managed 37, mostly scaup, 4 mallard drakes and a few tufted. A bit disappointing though really as there was over 2000 pochard off the hide all last week. With the wind blowing in they just wouldn't finish into the decoys for us. Hopefully the wind gets round a bit before next Saturday till we get another go at them. Maybe get a few redheads in the hide.

My retirement was short lived. 08:10am!

That's me retired from shooting mallard drakes. Stick to the divers from now on!

Let her build it. Wait till shes sitting. 56 grams of number 2s. Job done!!

Either very early or very late! Having said that we had a mallard clocking 8 eggs in a mallard tunnel last year in mid January. If there getting good enough feeding i think they will more or less breed year round. I would be very surprised if any of your 3 ducklings make it to adulthood given the poor weather at the minute. Hornady superformance varmint 50gr 22-250
remi700 replied to Hunter123456's topic in Reloading and Gun Maintenance
Yeah I used to shoot the 55 grain old hornadays in the brown cardboard box then went to the dealer one day and he hadn't got any, only the new superformance so i tried a few boxes. I don't think they grouped as well through my gun as the old hornadays so when i was done with them i went back to the older ones. No doubt they done the job on foxes but i defiantly didn't see any advantage to them. My friends shooting the new superformance through his .222 tikka and he loves them. Just depends on your gun i suppose but i dont see a real need for the extra speed they give. The 22.250 is already fla -
Have a look around for them. Anywhere with flooded willow or alder trees are a good bet for mallard.
-
Any flooding locally around the time you lost the ducks? If they can get natural food from flood waters they'll go there own way, no amount of barley or wheat will hold them.
-
You won't beat sally willows. Take an offcut off an existing bush and stick it in the ground and you'll have a bush in no time. Just keep triming the top off them to thicken them out. Very fast growing!

Have 100 canadas 50 lags and 200 wigeon feeding on the same 50 yards of shore all week and they seem to be getting on fine. Wont be doing as well after tomorrow morning though!

Beautiful work. Well done. Elm must be getting hard to get now. Made a set of stairs from it a few years back and timber alone cost £3400! Fantastic grain.
-
Unlikely but you never no. Depends if they go to the same roost tonight, wind direction will have to be the same and there feed field will have to be the same. Alot of variables but you defiantly wont shoot them in the house! Atb Mark.

First time rifle advice please ??
remi700 replied to Bunny-Blaster's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
If you want to shoot rabbits at 100+ yards id say the .17hmr would be a better calibre then the .22. You'll have a flatter trajectory. Not quite as cheap to feed but there not too bad. Something like a cz should do the job nicely. Easy to get hold of, cheap and reliable. For the foxes and deer the .243 will do your job well. Concentrate more on a good scope then a good rifle. Most rifles are capable of shooting 1" groups and thats adequate. Something like a Remington 700, Howa 1500 or a savage arms will do your job. ATB Mark. -
Ideally all hens when they come in first and introduce more drakes to it after that as the drakes are colouring but I don't think it makes much odds. If you can get where wigeon want to be there not that fussy.

Hi Jimmy, wouldn't worry about size. The bigger the better. The more visible they are the better they will work. Ducks dont have the same size perception that humans have. Ive seen Americans decoy geese from under huge shell decoys that are made into chairs with no problem.

Check out guntrader. Lots of good guns sold on it everyday. I'd defiantly say you better to go with a good second hand gun then buy a new cheaper gun. Old Miroku possibly if your thinking over and under older berettas also worth a look. If your thinking auto Fabarm, Remington, Browning Beretta all worth a look. Atb Mark

If your fixed to them 2 the remington is 10 times the gun.
-
Without a doubt Fabarm autos for me cant be beaten. I've been shooting them for years. Never had a single problem with them and i'd be very sore on guns. Cycle any load and never jam. Never need cleaning. Really simple construction. The one im shooting now went to the bottom of lough neagh 2 weeks ago at the start of a mornings diver shooting. Got her out put 3 shells in her and away she went. Never jammed and she hasn't been cleaned since. I dont like berreta autos. No doubt there well built also but i could never find one that suited me, there also alot more complicated.

For some reson i seem to have recessed eyes as well. -
They have a habit of doing that. They don't be long getting wise to being shot at on particular fields. Many pinks with them? Seen a bunch of 60 greys up the lough there this evening. they were just loafing about, no intentions of going to a field to feed. The waters so low here there probably getting enough picking around the shore. Long time to february yet though!

2 Fabarm autos a Browning maxus and a Bereta Extrema.

Got my pup her first goose retrieves this morning too. No bother to her!

Haven't had a whack at the geese this 3 weeks or more because we've been at the divers. Found a field with 200 canadas and 30 greys on it yesterday morning so decided to give them a go this morning. Had a few friends that we shoot divers with down for the morning. When we went in the greys were roosting on the field. They got up and flew out into the bay and lit again. Set up the coys and waited. Pair of canadas came at daylight, shot them. Then 30 minutes later another pair in and got them too. Then 150 left the roost in one bunch took one wide pass and decided against it. Wouldn't have been

Salt water brine for 2 or 3 days first. You can be sure there tender then and it removes the wild taste. I never measure the salt (about 1/2 inch in the bottom of a half pint glass) Then use any of the jars you like. Works great for foreshore ducks as-well.
