You are still missing the point entirely, 600 yards with a .223 at a range isn't an experiment, the rifle is well known to be perfectly capable at that distance under range circumstances, 1000 is capable, 1200 yards may be an experiment with it! My .223 1,300ft lb, your .22lr with Eley subs less than 100ft lb! :hmm: We have a lot of different calibres and types of ammo for a reason! I don't have any crow examples but this may help to explain what I mean, hit a rabbit at 150-200 yards with a .22lr and the odds are you may spend some time looking for the hole it made, this bunny was hit at a -

To be honest I see more than a little justification for that. It seems that riflehunter583 is heading down the path of many a target shooter, looking at as many options as possible and analysing every shot, and often pushing the calibre to limits considered extreme by the hunter. There in nothing wrong with this in principle and every piece of knowledge gained on a range may well have a place in the field, but they are very different places. Shots on the limits of any calibre will always present a mass of problems and variables, barrel temperature, condition, cleanliness, trigger weight -

i am about 1000 feet above sea level here approx. alot of the subs i fire seems to start to crack a little at my place. but having just looked it up its to do with temp mainly and not sea level. There are many factors that could effect it, but unless height/temperatures are Extreme then they will have negligeable effect, most manufacturers subs are designed to perform somewhat below the speed of sound. My first suggestion would be quality control, it is not at all uncommon for a box of subs to have one or two fast ones, and it the case of my last box of Remington subs it was common -

Just get out there and do it, instead of working out what changes in temp etc, do to the trajectory when paper punching. It might be more important if you were talking about many hundreds of yards. If I see a fox, crow, rabbit, maggie etc the only thing that concerns me is the range and wind speed, along with all the safety issues of backstop. Oblique winds are far more likely to raise or dro -

hi chris where abouts are you based. sounds like a nice little shoot you got. my mate had a shoot neat to a resavouir which he eventually lost. the water made the wildlife more abundant. good sport for his shotgun and rifle. also handy being so close. my crow shoot is 500 acres but its a bit of a drive away. -

Long range, medium range, short range, round the stables and barns and farmhouse, around the horses/cattle/sheep? Like I say the .17 CF/.204 have their uses, so does the .22lr, HMR, WMR, Hornet, .222, 223, 22-250, .243 etc etc on fox, and many will argue that some of these are even more useful/versatile for Charlie, etc! You need to look at your quarry, land, ability, circumstances, etc and evaluate everything available, and then buy the best percieved tool for the job, for some that will be a .17CF/.204! thanks for the replys. think i'm gonna get a .17 hmr they seem like a ver -

i am not a ballistics expert but do get the idea that these rimfire bullets slowing down from supersonic to subsonic can cause accuracy problems. (don't understand the science and not sure i am bother either) but one thing is for sure becuase i live on the moor /high up (where pics were taken) its freckin cold up here in winter and the speed of sound is a fraction slower by a little bit up here! evey time i drive up / down into town all year round the thermometre on my car always gets warmer by a degree when i go down into town and colder when i come back home! -

Thats an interesting one, but probably not as bad as many may think, how often does the opportunity arise to head shoot a crow at 400 yards  ? So as long as you don't get into any rapid fire contests, and keep them clean probably not too bad! These are not your daily, run of the mill bunny bashing tools! my guess is i'd be bankrupt by the cost of the rounds or buying new barrels/guns!! airgun and rimfire shore is not the most accurate but it is cheaper in the long run. -

My .22lr is zeroed for 60 yards and is a dedicated sub sonic tool, it is very rare I would go out to -90 yards with it, shooting well at those distances with one is good going in my book. 100 yards with a HMR is a different matter, that's why I don't use the .22lr at distance generally, this is about the best I have done with the HMR, it was a zeroing session, and I bottled out of the 5th shot! 3 and 4 were only a tiny fraction off being in the same hole! i'm liking this group at 100 yards lads. me gotta get a hmr now!!!!!!!!!! That was a good day, I'd be over the moo -

after reading all the comments i think that i have fallen very lucky with the barrel quality and trigger on this gun i have brought. aslo the performace of the eley subs with my gun seem good. i shot my mates bruno .22 a while back and it was as many of you describe a .22lr good for 50 - yards ish. So i conider my gun a lucky buy. for all the testing my gun has been zeroed at 50 yards for stalking work. but there are 10 half mills down at 10x on my scope and i have a trajectory table in a water proof wallet on the stock in 5 yard intervals. i also have a laser range finder which i have p -

If you can do it then fine! But I think you have the wrong rifle for your intended use! If I was after long range crows (120yards +++) I wouldn't even be thinking about a .22lr. HMR, .17CF or maybe even a .204! I have a site where I can get down prone, off the bipod, and head shoot a few Canadas at spot on 100 yards with the HMR, I wouldn't even think of trying with a .22lr! 1. i'll let you know how i get on. it windy up at this farm. its actually called hill top farm! and the eley fall well into the wind. i hit a plastic magpie at 120 yards with the eley subs in a -

No it doesn't, Velocitors are 40g HP, they run at 1435 ft sec with 183ft lb at the muzzle and go transonic at just short of 100 yards, therefore stability is debatable. They are a high speed, heavy HP hunting rounds, designed for small game, they are not a Target round. Whilst every barrel has it's ammo preferences, even the best target barrel is not going to make Velocitors accurate at 120 or 180 yards as mentioned, especially in strong winds, and a field rifle is likely to be worse! "cci volocitiors are a bit wild"...well you got that right, if you can show me any rifle that will d -
I used .22 for about 10 years and then switched to .177 for the next 10. Literally thousands of bunnies in the field have helped me form my opinions regarding both calibres. .177 kills better than .22 in 12ftlbs guise,in my opinion,oh and 30 years of shooting experience, i used to have a nice second hand falcon fn19 air gun when i was a kid. it was over the limited at about 14fpe. i sold it but regretted it alot after. i used it on a few bunnies and it was the best air gun i ever had and i have had a few. it was .177 cal. it nocked rabbits over perfectly. 60 yard heat shot on a rabb
