Well I started looking for a new pup late last year I managed get back in touch with some old mates to get the word round and see what's on the floor well it turned out on of my best mates hasn't got enough work for his bitch and asked me if I wanted give her some graft well not ideal but better than nothing I took her out to a public place I wanted to see what she was like recall etc well let's just say not good so that was one thing work on but one thing was clear she knew what she's bred for. Next trip out was a lamping session the rabbits arnt over running the farm but there's a few about

What batterys does the collar take and where is the best place buy them from.

I thought dogs were once wild then domesticated to pets you say I have no relavence but your post of no they wernt leaves the door open for a manner of suggestion maybe a little more info next time or are you suggesting wild dogs were used as working tools before they were pets??????
-
No they weren't... mine still are granted working but still pets non the less i don't think there's anything worse than treating your dogs any less the saying a dogs for life dosnt mean working life does it any dog I own will live and die with me as a working pet.
-
It's all about putting the time in with a dog let's be honest all dogs were pets once the thing is though you take a chance on things like poor feet bad coat low prey drive etc from a none working home in theory if you buy from a good line of worker to worker bred dogs from a person who knows there stuff they will breed pups to get rid of these faults and in the long run you will get a better chance of this dog making a working dog than one bred from pet stock also I like to know what bloods gone into my dog not just parents grand parents great grand parents etc this not only shows the qualit

Bitch did well tonight a few creases iron out but I think with some work she will be a sound catch dog ones things for certain she's fast and turns on a penny downside she tends work up of the lamp I could do with sorting that out any tips would be appreciated.
-
ill try get some pictures not expecting to much as the bitch hasnt done much of late so isnt as proper fit a few squatters would be ideal my mates coming along with his bitch ive been out with her the last few weeks and shes a great little bitch.

after tagging on with a few lads these past weeks its safe to say im enjoying my nights out and me taking my time to find the [bANNED TEXT] dog my mate has allowed me take his bitch out as he hasnt got time at the moment went out this morning for an hour make sure she was sound and check here recall and have a general look and was impressed how keen she was well i kept it short because the wind is howling in stoke so were going lamping tonight wish us both luck.

Dont get me wrong mate i wouldnt get rid of a dog myself, but surely a good pet home for a retired worker is better than sitting in a kennel not working? i know where your coming from i just think its heartless how can anyone say they love there dogs when they give them away when they are done with them my mum and dad are getting on now but im not going get a new set in i see a dog as part of the family i lost my last dog years ago im still gutted now and just starting get back into it i honestly feel if you dont have that bond with your dog then you dont deserve it like you say you wouldn
-
Totally disagree if you own a dog you give it a home for life not just it's working life and as for space if you love your dog you would find it that's a big problem with lads today it's orate giving it the big un when your dogs in it's prime catching big bags but when they stop it's f**k that I need another dog.
-
Ive been keeping an eye on preloved etc and come across a guy who's retired his much loved lurcher and now wants her go to a loving pet home!!!!!! So he's had his fun with her she's served him well but now she can't do it nomore it's see you later!!! I think its f*****g awful what goes through these peoples heads?
-
My lady isn't anti she loves animals so can't get her head round pest control but she knows it's something i've done since I was very young so she chooses to just forget the fact I go hunting I take my missus fishing and she understands my love for the countryside I think education and ignorance are the key to a good relationship with an animal loving wife.

sound advice mate nice one and thanks to everyone whos posted on the thread and via pm what you say is exactly what im after lads who have bred a litter to work themselves off dogs they have worked for generations and are proud of the lines they work i think this is the only way these days to sort the proper dog men from the peddlers i made a mistake last dog i owned luckily it was a good mistake but it could have been so wrong. anyway thanks again and ill keep you all posted.

do you enjoy watching other dogs as much as your own
mat_p replied to hellyer189's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
I find myself In this very situation at the moment I've been going out with a few pals recently and I've enjoyed watching 2 very good bitches but it's not the same as watching your own dog In an ideal world I like to go out with a dog each and see the best of both worlds and fingers crossed next year I'll be doing just that. -
My old dog did the same when he was a pup drove me up the wall at times he would run a mile sniff a dogs arse then back again but the obvious dangers are the other dog could grip hold of yours or even turn him into a fighter that won't work with other dogs luckily as my old boy starting getting more into his work he stopped chasing other dogs but this was after 12 month of hard graft with him so if it's a instant cure you need then the e collar is the way but I reckon he will grow out of it in time with training.
-
Looks nice mate all the best with him.
-
Cheers mate I'll get there I reckon i suppose the reason I want the breeding I do is they are the dogs I've had before and They have all Been bang on so I'm not going have my head turned by these bull x even though they look awesome they ain't really rabbity dogs but I have had a dog with beddi and collie in him that took rabbits for fun and could handle bigger game aswell.
-
not for Me mate I'm after a pup from a good working home from good working parents I must admit I looked but thought better of it.
-
yeh ive been looking on them sites ive been told theres a whippet site that has a few good litters on now and again got afew local dog lads on the look out aswell m,issed out on a great litter last year lurcher to lurcher but ive seen both parents and they were really good dogs i believe the pups are doing the biz already gutted to be fair but i wasnt ready heart wasnt in it i dont care how long it takes mate ill get the [bANNED TEXT] dog at some point just got to know where look.
-
they would be ideal apart from the deerhound the staff and the saluki ideally im after a beddi whippett greyhound to a collie whippett greyhound but ill take any way they are mixed id like the collie in the dads side pref though thanks though mate and best of luck with the pups.
