  1. But there not an apex predator. In other countries wolves, eagles etc. thin them out.
  2. Don't forget the GAA...both hurling and Gaelic football. Some cracking games coming up in the semis over the next few weeks in both codes.
  3. Its bit of grey area that since Woodies are classed as both vermin and gamebird with a season. In the latter case you can shoot over stubbles. Good sport too!!
  4. Its very satisfying when one gets numbers like that. If you hit a sweet spot you can can literally get dozens of the little feckers in just a few weeks
  5. Those birds you mention are all now fully protected in the Republic. So trapping them is indeed illegal.
  6. I'd be interested myself in one of those but at 6ft 3" I'd be worried about leg-room. Especcially as my left knee is acting up a bit recently. I'd only be taking her on short trips (less than 30 minute drives most of the time) so maybe I might be ok??
  7. The actions of a few rotten apples shouldn't be used to taint a whole sport. However shooting organizations must have a zero tolerance policy when it comes to dealing with rogue individuals. Ever illegal incident only erodes public support for our sport and plays into the hands of the Antis!!
  8. I know of 2 cases over here where East Europeans got done for killing swans. In one case a dead swan was found in this guys luggage at Dublin airport. A few years back a village pond a few miles from here got cleaned out overnight. Swans, geese and ducks....all gone
  9. Their harder to catch at this time of year cos theres loads of other food available. I trap most of mine during the late winter and early spring when natural food is scarce
  10. You have to take your hat off to the Scots in this department. I feel a bit sorry for Moyles though, serious pressure filling those giant shoes
  11. Hares have made a decent come back in these parts over the past 5 years or so. Habitat work and hammering the foxes appears to have paid off I'm glad to say.
  12. Thats some size of a rat... obviously had a good christmas
  13. Yes Europe and I think in Ireland. It is safe to use if done properly I believe, and non target species can be brought round again by bringing into the warm, but illegal in UK. It was recently banned in Ireland for that purpose. Was killing too many non-target species and pets. Only allowed for rodents now indoors. Like the UK you can only cage-trap and shoot birds classed as vermin now.
  14. Its been the toughest year I can remeber in that regards. Alot of birds died of hypothermia and i doubt many wild broods made it between that and many cover crops failing.
  15. Ha Ha - even the Daily mail suggesting its a CGI fake!!. Must be a slow news day in Canada
  16. Serious aggro between 2 shoots near here over that a couple of years back. One was up a hill from the other and no matter what the guy on the hill did, nearly all his pheasants wandered down the valley to the other fellas place. FA the former could do about it and last I heard he doesn't even bother with the phezzies anymore and concentrates on Woodcock now instead.
  17. That Samaras lad looks like Jesus Christ, but he played like God tonight!!
  18. He was a class act for shure. Had a stunning lookin wife too who is still alive!!
  19. According to a recent article in Nat Geo its getting to the stage where the only Lions availiable for hunting purposes will be those canned ones, such has been the decline in Wild Lions numbers across Africa in recent decades...something approaching 90% since 1980.Most Wild Lions are now no longer found outside big parks like Kruger. Also says their on the point of extinction or extinct in nearly all West and Central African countries. This decline is not primarily due to hunting but to the loss of wilderness areas across Africa in the face of ever increasing human and livestock numbers.
  20. It certainly is. A lad I know lost his best terrier when his dopey mot fed the dog a few squares of dark chocolate!!

    Ryder Cup

Great comeback....I had them written off this time yesterday!!
  22. I think you can only use cage traps - at least thats the law over here
  23. I hope Galway win the replay....I'm sick of the sight of Cody's men collecting the title, its not good for the game their near total dominance of the past decade:(
  24. Well here its a case of battling slugs 24/7 and the worst summer ground conditions I've ever known. You can't even get machinery into alot of fields along with moisture levels sky high in the oats, barley etc. Much of the Kale that survived the slugs has simply rotted:(
