No, you don't. You need good base lines, but breeding lurcher to lurcher, however good they work, is a lottery. It always has been and always willbe UNLESS you know the exact lines of each - but that is more selective breeding than just worker to worker. I despair sometimes of the general ignorance that is shown. I have bred my strain true for over 30 years. Not as a mney maker, just to replace my own dog when needed. If people understood breeding and genetics you wouldnt see so much claptrap as that written in the previous 14 pages. There are some good posts, but you can spot the "I am a b

Some coursing, lurcher, countryside books you might enjoy. I am having to clear the house, so selling all sorts of stuff off: Postage arranged with buyer, because I might be able to drop off, or meet to save those costs - will combine if more than one bought, so always postage at cost. COURSING BOOKS The Complete Lurcher by D. Brian Plummer full of some of my pictures! Not all of them, but many. Those were the days! This is collectable. £15 - the next volume, The New Complete Lurcher, was the last book Brian wrote and it has my dog, "Peggy" on the cover! I am not selling that one. A Cours

Reading through this, it is obvious many "lurcher lads" haven't a clue about genetics or how to go about breeding! You do not get the same thing if you cross two crosses. UNLESS you back cross, or like David does, line breed. Then you get repeatable results - but taking two of those pups and breeding them, you will NOT get the same thing out. The litters will be mixed and you might get one or two of the desired pups in the litter, but not right through. David starts with a working collie BITCH and mates it to a greyhound dog. THAT is a colliexgreyhound. If you use a colie dog and put i

Late in on this - but if Laoni doesn't go with what you have written, get in touch and I will write a piece - I have written for the Countryman's Weekly from when her dad owned it and it was called The Shooting News. The antis burned the offices down - and our house and our car, because I was the official photographer for the National Coursing Club and did the Waterloo reports (and other coursing trophies across the country) since React Fagan won in 1986 for Shooting News, Shooting Times and The Field. Some of you may have bought limited edition prints off me from the Nominators car park, I al -
You can get it roughly right. In reality there is only one way to zero a rifle at 30 yards (or any other range) and that is to shoot a target at that range and adjust acordingly - then check it at 10, 20, 25, 35, 40 and 45 yards - 50 as well and further if you have the time and the patience on the day - or leave that for another time.

With a pellet I hope - don't let him dry fire a spring or ram rifle. They need the cushioinging effect of the pellet or the piston head will suffer damage. Even firing felt pellets on their own is not good for these rifles. I cam begin to understand the authorities and their worry about daft twits with air rifles having read through this. A proper system of rifle handling will always avoid double loading. Get into the habit of always doing the same thing - EITHER cock and load just before firing time (walk round empty, uncocked).OR always load, as in cock and load. That way, you either ALW

Everyone knows that gravity is a myth perpetuated by the Government. In reality, the earth sucks.

A woman brought a very limp duck into a veterinary surgeon. As she laid her pet on the table, the vet pulled out his stethoscope and listened to the bird's chest. After a moment or two, the vet shook his head and sadly said, "I'm sorry, your duck, Cuddles, has passed away." The distressed woman wailed, "Are you sure?" "Yes, I am sure. Your duck is dead," replied the vet.. "How can you be so sure?" she protested. "I mean you haven't done any testing on him or anything. He might just be in a coma or something." The vet rolled his eyes, turned around and left the room. He returned a few m

The rifling twist will also be affected by the wind. Here is a useful wind clock for everyone to use. It won't give the actual amount, but it shows the direction the wind will affect your impact.

With the BSA barrel - try some Defiants. Go for the large head size and give it a good 50 shots before you assess the grouoing - most BSA barrels will shoot them and they are superb in flight - clover leaf groups at 50 yards from my .22 Scorpion - my Theoben SLR likes them too. The most accurate pellet I have ever tried in anything.

An S20 doesn't have the air capacity for FAC - what would you get? 10 shots?

Still a few myths flying around. Theoben didn't go tits up - they were tactically withdrawn. I know Darren and Alison have been hard at work behind the scenes for some time I am glad they got the funding they needed - yes, the rifles will be better than the old Rapids we know and love. They have the quick fill and guage as standard for one thing - barrels, they are are bought in by nealr everyone, BSA make their own, but Theiben didn't (traditionally they used Anschutz), Daystate use Walther/Lowther, Air Arms use CZ barrels. The sythentic stock - it is one off the shelf, so they have n

Do You Zero Scope When You Switch Between Garden/club?
Acuspell replied to dangerousdan's topic in General Airgun Discussion
I don't know if you saw my post above because you were posting at the same time! Once you have "roughed" your scope settings out in Chairgun - then go and put targets up and do it for real, because Chairgun does NOT take into account any pellet walk you might get. Only practical shooting will show you this. besides it will help you get a mental picture of what to do instinctively at different ranges - if close, give it a bit of holdover. If 20 yards ish, you need to aim low a bit. Once you have done it all on the flat - find a steep hill. It can be in the woods, or it can be a steep fi -
Do You Zero Scope When You Switch Between Garden/club?
Acuspell replied to dangerousdan's topic in General Airgun Discussion
Dan - look at your rifle and scope from the side.......the sight sits about 2" higher than the hole through the barrel. At close ranges, you are looking through the sight at the target, the barrel is looking at the target from a viewpoint 2" lower - that is why you need to lift it up a bit to hit the target - the sight has been set to make the barrel look at the taregt further out...30 yards ish. It takes that 30 yards for th epellet to go from 2" under the sight line, to coincide with the sightline. (SIMPLIFIED - don't complicate it at this stage folks with talk of primary and secondary....le -
What's The Best Air Rifle For Hunting
Acuspell replied to happyhunter123's topic in General Airgun Discussion
This is 14 shots from my Theoben SLR98 - two magazines - from 35 yards. It is a gasram multi-shot repeater, underlever cocking, but the magazine that went on to fuel the Rapid 7. Not off sandbags, stood, leaning over the car door. It does the job. The Rapid 12/200 is just awesome, better than the Huntsman, but each has their own strengths and characteristics. -
The Rapid has stood the test of time - I have a friend who managed 1458fps from a .22 with Crossman premiers out of his "experimental" rapid, it needed a 23" barrel to achieve that mind. He has four Rapids, this is one he uses to try out ideas - accuracy at that speed was non existent, and the noise was deafening - he just wanted to see how fast he could drive a .22 pellet from his valve and hammer set up. Running at around 975 fps gives best compromise of noise, air efficiency and powwr - it means a .22 is around the 40lb mark, but with 24gn pellets you can achieve 60ft-lbs and great accuracy

Heroes On The Water Fundraising Weekend
Acuspell replied to Acuspell's topic in Fresh & Salt Water Fishing
That could be arranged for next year - where would you suggest for a venue? Workington? Ravenglass estuary? I have done them on Anglesey in the past. -
Any number of modern rifles will push out big numbers. The Daystate Air Ranger in .22 will do a sensible 40ft-lbs, and 80ft-lbs in .25 - also the Air Wolf but I am not convinced about the longevity of electric triggers and battery operated safety switchs in the field! FX - they do several high powered models (spares and servicing can be tricky) S-16 is a favourite to butcher and take into the 30s in .22 - not the most reliable thing to land yourself with. My suggestion would be to go for a Theoben Rapid, you can pick up an FAC one in .22, pushing between 30ft-lbs and 45ft-lbs dependi

We were asked if Paul and I would put on a kayak fishing skills and safety course for the South Wales lads. The date was arranged and we made a weekend of it, great campsite and the venue was Oxwich Bay, sheltered even in strong winds - a southerly gale would simply have blown is back on the beach! On the Saturday we all had a great time learning new skills, new techniques and had a lot of fun getting wet, fairly often so as to become completely confident with jumping off and getting back on a kayak. The evening was spent in the drizzle around a roaring BBQ, massive piles of charcoal glowing b

Really Gutted I Had To Sell My Panorama
Acuspell replied to Andy_c's topic in General Airgun Discussion
Nikon Prostaff- will shoot for 40 minutes longer than MTC after twilight. When the Panorama has grained out, the Prostaff is still resolving colours on pigeons! -
You did the right thing to get the cross hair sharp (the rear lens group) That stays fixed for all ranges, it is adjusted for your eyesight. The Front, adjustable focus is to focus the target and at HIGH magnification will need focussing for different ranges. AT LOW MAGNIFICATION (6x and below) you can set it at around 30 yards and verything from about 20 feet - 40 yards will be sharp enough to see to shoot accurately. A good guide for zero ranges ae: .177 = 34 yards .20 = 31 yards .22 = 28 yards Then you need to shoot targets at different ranges to discover the arc of flight fo
