  1. I have to say I prefer the personality of hobs. But on the flip side my two jills weigh less than the one hob which counts when you have to lug them around the country side
  2. Just shite luck I reckon. All I can say I had a beddy whippet once and very slightly built dog who could run any sort of rough ground. Now I have a 30KG plonker that when he hits some thing hits it hard

  7. A good dog can teach a person a lot starting out I know mine did
  8. Handy for stock. I remember as a kid walking along the bottom of a bank with the JR taking the lead doing his thing. The lurcher pup looked up the bank and saw some sheep taking off and he made a start to go then hesitated and looked what the JR was doing and thought sod it and followed the JR. That was him broke he never made another move at a sheep again
  9. Going to sack walshie if he don't hit this numpty with his big stick
  10. Yea clue is the name like purse
  11. I think its also a last ditch attempt at a cry for mercy going all submissive. They know there screwed and nothing else left to try. Just a thought

    Terriers

They sound good dogs your just going to have to be on the ball you won't stop them going to ground and a shame to even try. All ways carry a shovel on every walk and keep collared up but know your ground as best you can. If they take off on a scent get them legs moving and try keep up
  15. Aye good luck not easy at time. Vary the sheep and circumstances too. You can walk them round the same shep daily for 5 months and be bang on. Then go some where else on a frosty morning ferreting and walk over the brow of hill and see half dozen running up the valley bottom and its a different ball game again Then you get the sly ones that know what a long line is all about.
  16. Ray is right I reckon it is not nice but you have no choice but even that may not work with some like mine. So collar is next best thing and better as you having the timing on your side. Use continuous not pulse or it might run through it. It might take a few goes some times but every time it sets off bang it won't take many goes. In the mean time never give it the opportunity again with out a collar be cause each time it goes it will be harder.Get a long line on. Plus a walloping after the event is not ideal and too late really
  17. Our local pack are a great bunch of folks and they run there own local lurcher, terrier show. I don't follow as it is not my thing. But we all need to stick together
  18. BT just make the fast places faster and to hell with the rest. You get some farm house at the end of the line in the middle of now where your screwed. No way will BT spend spend the dosh to get you on a par with every one else
  19. Good offer Jamie and hope you get back at it soon.
  20. All ways like to give the dog a rag back in the day where's the harm as long as it's dispatched first. Not so important once there going but no reason not too. This was back in the early eighties when we had a bit more freedom and weren't forced to recycle ffs Even now with the ferrets when they start. This was the jills first day out but rarely bother once they are going.
  21. Well said. Took me over 3 years to break mine with sheep and his now 5 and ok with them. But I never trust him and work him accordly. His not so bad his a liability and has lost things by sheep and not looked twice. But I know the dog and just because he does some thing right one day don't mean he will do it the next. I live in wales and we manage fine. Yes it does detract from the day being on edge at times but I am happy to live with. Some are not which is fine as well
  22. Never trust them fully but i bet you could have a good go and manage it.
