  1. Just picked some for dinner to cook whole at 3-4 inch the ones I tried last year whole where much bigger. Going with some beef later. Got asparagus and cabbage too. Planted some white beet root today and Root Parsley which is like a parsnip. Also some Aztec Broccoli which should be interesting
  2. We did try them like that last year Allan but I think I let them get a bit too big and the wife didn't like them in the pods. But I will give them a go the size you say. The wife likes her veg to be a mush not big on texture lol
  3. broad beans on the menu soon onions bulbing up nicely good job the mint is growing well will need some soon marrow and squash
  4. Yes we have possibility of frost or did have so netting back on the new spuds shame to knock them back for sake of a bit netting
  5. Got back today first thing pick the ferrets up next straight down the allotment. Spuds are motoring now had covered them while away in case of a frost but I think we are in the clear now and they are big enough to be ok any way This years planted broadbeans and on the the right my third lot of peas that has been stuffed by mice, voles. They are laying around on the surface even though I buried the edges of the net. Going to soak in paraffin next and try that for next attempt autumn sown beans hanging in there asparagus had run riot while away we had the tough old lower
  6. That's what you call a mark love to see that. But some times you have to make do with what you have. All good fun how ever you do it
  7. That is bang on I went straight into it after school I think there was 4 of us and we got free lodge and 18 quid a week. As you say it was just labour under the guise of trainee keeper. There was a promise for me to go up to north wales and work as a proper trainee up there as I used to buckle down and graft which they loved. Asked me too work one weekend and promised me a free sunday lunch out. Thanks for that but I think I will go home for weekend and do bit of ferreting and have nice beef dinner round the grand mothers bit more appealing
  8. hairs tend to be a good sign but it is pot luck really the ones you least expect will have a rabbit in which will catch you out because you made a half hearted effort of netting up because you didn't think any thing was at home
  9. Hard graft but a foot in the door worth a crack if that is the game to want to get into
  10. Hopefully terry your crops will be ok if not give him a good beating lol I hope so or he is going in my bean trench
  11. Nice one john I had 4 spears last week too. It is starting to take off now but we are away for a week so I hope it don't go too mad. My plot neighbour has been blasting his plot with weedkiller so hopefully all my stuff will be alive when I get back. All my spuds were coming through nice and green so if I get back and they are dead I will know why
  12. you cant judge a group based on a few idiots though
  13. Thanks terry , I'll have a look at that well that was bit of let down but early days
  14. Bit of a heads up bbc 2 tuesday at 8 http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p01wjmt1
  15. Yes got to agree goats are good for that we used to keep ours tethered and edge them through the brambles and bracken. Did a good job and nice milk too
  16. Planted out some cabbage and all year round cauli not sure why I bothered with cauli though but maybe this year will be better now I have some manure in Nice straight rows as all ways all the spuds in and 3 rows of earlies showing but I keep them earthed up thumbs up for the durham early definitely grow them again
  17. I stuck a handful of manure in the bottom of each bag then a bit of compost and sat them on that but nothing else. If I had known about comfrey at the time I would have probably given them a dose of that. But the yield was quite tidy any way
  18. Yes a lot can be done in the back yard just need to be on the ball with watering I found Spuds were good too oddly I didn't get any more out of that bin than I did a smaller bag so massive containers wasn't necessarily needed
  19. Plenty of room in there just the job for a head start. looking well organised too
  20. Good for you Ideation great feeling having your own bit of land I miss the small holding i was bought up on. Pigs chickens, ducks yum it all revolves around me belly
  21. Yes that was what surprised me basically a small dead end very confined. As you say all hell would break lose but never a mark on the ferret. The dog copped it mind but then I guess the squirrel new its time was up
  22. Never forget my first squirrel the terrier marked the bottom of an old oak which had a small hole in a few feet up. I popped in a small jill not knowing how it was going to go. There was a hell of a racket and out flew a squirrel which the dog nailed and got a fair old nip as I recall. Had a few out of the same tree over the years
