  1. Good pics that will help some people widen their options of trap setting in different and difficult situations. Sorry for nit picking and not meant as a criticism, and it may be that you removed the tunnels from the Kania's for the pics. but those set on the tiles and on lapboard wall don't seem to have them? Spring traps approval for Kania 2000 and 2500 requires a tunnel to be used as with BG, Fenn etc. to keep you within the law. I think very few people are aware of this as they see the bait and trigger mechanism housing as being a tunnel, but you need to use an artificial or natural t
  2. DS, did you give it a sniff yourself. If sweet and musky it may be an Otter if the shit was in a place you'd expext Mink. With warm weather recently an opportunistic Otter may have come across a drowsy Hedgehog and made a meal of it. The other options for you are Pine Martin and Badger. Boar Badgers are often turned out of Setts this time of year when young are born hence increase in roadkills around now, and when vagrant they will not use latrines as they are not marking territory. Pine Martins I have no experience of but would I'm sure take a dopey weak and sleepy 'hog.By the same thoug
  3. Hi, the current general licences in Scotland are valid up to 31st March. Then new ones will be in place from 1st April Apparent changes are traps having a sign/tag with operators number on , passing your number to the Police before you use it. Don't know about telling of locations but it would seem a good idea to do risk assesments/environmental assessments listing positions as good pesties do with poison bait points. You must show you have considered other methods of non lethal control (scaring) too, and most importantly you must be able to show that you have read and understand the genera
  4. Again you cherry pick my points to suit ye own view, Dawn. Ye've completely side stepped, as is becoming usual for ye here, the main issues I repeatedly raise. And That is a down right fabrication. READ the very BBC / Government sponsered article you yeself thrust at us and ye'll see it clearly states the tests were " Inconclusive ". Then they tack on that the hairs " Could have been badger. ". As I say above; By that 'reasoning' they might equelly have been Orang Utan. Please return to post # 9 and start providing your Answers. Otherwise this thread will only continue with the vast major

    rabbit wipe out

Hold on a minute, I'm as sceptical as anyone when it comes to ultrasonic and electromagnetic pest solutions, Ive not yet seen one even deter pests but if JBS means he is working with Wildlife Management International of NZealand,it does put a very different perspective on things. They have a track record in non native species removal, in the UK recently Rats on the Island of Canna( a long swim from JBS on the west coast of Scotland), Google them or Canna. I am positive that if this were merely another Ebay/SundayRag seller they would not be making trips half way round the world. If this does

    Help!

Hi Skycat, try your local Ag. Retailer - SCATS, Countrywide. there is a relatively new product Vermex which has a range of organic worming solutions for poultry, livestock to pets. Add it to food, job done. Talpa
  7. THAY SAY DEFRA APPROVED THEM IN JANUARY 07... Only able to collapse unoccupied burrows and tunnels. You have to do your best to remove the problem pest before you use it as Explosions are not a method 'allowed' for the destructionof animals. So you have to trap, gas if applicable to that pest and then you can have fun with the gas mix and ignition. Looks very impressive and in States where it originates is a good tool to clear Gophers and moles, but most in the UK will have better ways of spending better part of £2K. Talpa
  8. As has already been said, at this time of year young moles both male and female are being pushed out of the maternal territory, so that they can all get on with their solitary existence. The quickest way to move away is over the surface so that the burrows are not connected, so avoiding any fiture conflict, they are no holds barred fighters, often to the death and the noise they make in the process should be used for horror films. Moles will travel over the surface looking for Luv. too, supposedly only mating and having one litter a year, which I think now is being reassessed by researchers, a
  9. Hi JD, have a look at www.alanaecology.com (sorry- haven't progressed enough with 'puters to do links) they have low wattage tubes that will run off 12v. as well as complete moth trap set ups. there is a heap of interesting kit and gadgets that I'm sure will sent you off on many tangents of exploration of our countrysides flora and fauna. All you need is the time and money, parameters set by some b&st&rd to curb our interests and enthusiasms. Seem to remember that some people use cloths soaked in a red wine/sugar solution to attract some moth, leaving it in situ. then catchin
  10. Hi, I have had the same problems with hogs, so as a result I am just using single catch and multi catch - Legge traps, that way the hogs remain a pain in the proverbial but do snuffle off slowly on their release. Any rats/squirrels can be run into a sack and given a swift heavy strike to the head - which will make it to the corner every time. There was a neat tree set with a magnum trap on here a couple of months ago by one of the regular posters, Peg and Gun may be. As I recall used clout nails to hold traps on a vertical trunk with a single nail to hook a covering of leafy twigs to disguise
  11. Hi,I did the same with a Hawker Dragonfly larvae in a tank in my lodgings at the time.It was fascinating watching it feed on tadpoles and small fry that I used to net in the river margins.I nearly got my marching orders when the bloody thing emerged as a dragonfly and alledgedly attacked my landlord(feckin' fat wuss). What spectacular creatures there are in our water courses.........................Martin. Yes i have studied Southern hawkers and broad bodies chasers quite closely. They are most amazing creatures. also at one time i was quite obsessed with amphibians. i used to be able to f
  12. I think you were on the right track with your first hunch. It looks very much like you have a female Great Diving Beetle, they are sexually dimorphic. The elytra of the male has fewer ridges on it and the first pair of legs are different ( probably designed for grasping the thorax of females ((like male Frogs/Toads thumbs)) but the first pair of legs are missing or not visible on your pics. Often get calls from people reporting cockroachs when they find them inside after being drawn in by lights at night. Sometimes find them in Electric Fly Killers too. talpa
  13. Sorry D.S. I didn't enjoy dealing with it either, quite upsetting. But as you say, they are legal to use and if they are not up to the job they shouldn't be sold. I will refrain from buying them again as I like a clean kill whatever the target. If there is a problem with these traps, we need to highlight this and as horrible as it is to talk about it at least it raises awareness. I will start off with Blacks Organic Dark Chocolate, that way I have a chance of catching the wife as that is her absolute favourite. :-) If you have problems with bait being stolen without the
  14. House Sparrow. olive colour form rather than normal white with brown blothes and squigles? talpa
  15. You have replied to a thread (27/4) on the trap and snare sub forum that has two lots of drawings/dimensions for ladder traps. go with a curtain hanging down each side of the ladder section too to stop the agile and determined corvid. Good idea for a shelter, feeder and a water point to make decoy keeping on the right side of legal and help draw in the target species. Talpa.
  16. Yes it would only the gaps at the ladder section would need to be adjusted, for the much smaller size of the target species, and get the bait right. Have a look at birddamage.com, also worth looking at US web sites about Purple martins, where they have counterbalance repeating traps, there are repeating sparrow trap on ebay can be adjusted. Hope this helps Talpa
