  14. Hi Everyone, a friend of mine has a Deerhound x Saluki that he works around here, he had a good start last season averaging ones and twos per night, the dog was rested throughout spring and early Summer only to find he hasn't had a rabbit since, can any one offer any training advice ? he has trouble spotting the rabbits when there still and doesn't bother with them until they start the bolt, he is showing real promise in working with a lamp ! but is struggling to catch ! He`s 3 years and we've read that these crosses can take time to mature , is it age ? tonight he practically walked over them
  15. This is definitely the way forward, i was also recommended a Deerhound x Greyhound thats then crossed with a whippet to bring the size down, ideally the whippet side could have beddlington in it, sounds like a rare breeding opportunity though !
  16. No Its Tight ! the fields tend to be long and narrow with not alot of time and space for the dog to get to the rabbit ! i guess thats part of the thrill !
  17. Extreme Hunter, thats the kind of Wisdom i was after ! brilliant info !
  18. Cheers Guys, Thanks J.Dog.... interesting stuff, my friend runs a similar mix to those advertised, and it does struggle on the rabbits, but has had foxes with no problem! i think the beddiexwhippetxgrey sounds like a poachers pocket rocket !!
  19. beddyxwhipxgrey unless you fance a salukixwhipxgrey of just a whipxgrey need the whip in to give you that take off speed! Thanks extreme hunter - that makes alot of sense, i think ill probably have to travel to get the right mix, no one really breeds these sorts of mixes round here. i tell you what, i've shot alot of rabbits in my time but have to offer the quarry alot of respect, its like watching a scale electrics rabbit, never quite appreciated there speed and even more so the dogs at work !
  20. The field systems are relatively small round here, anything from about 3 acres the odd sheep fields of about 6/7 acres at the most , cornish hedged (stone) which the rabbits knock and burrow into, a mixture of pasture / cereals etc my pals deerhound x saluki struggles to get rabbits around here, he doesn't seem to turn tight enough on the rabbits, he is however great on foxes . ive started down the line of a bit of research and am thinking i need to go for a smaller mix if im predominantly going for rabbit ! this is were i need a bit of wisdom !
  21. Im in North cornwall 123456, just outside of a village called St Columb Major ! not many people work lurchers around here, lots of rough shoots and the odd posh driven shoot !
