What do people want from there terriers
porkypowell replied to a topic in Earthdogs & Working Terriers
This was all pre ban and many years ago Terriers =ground work/digging rat mink fox Spaniels= bushing/ferreting rat rabbit mink fox lurchers= running work rat rabbit fox beagle= just topiss me off I never knew, it would be head down and bloddy gone The key is to know how to get the best from your dog and exploit it. You are resposible for the dogs saftey just use your head. Be warned the most effective terrier I ever lost was during a family walk along a river found a big earth with out collar neve -

Firstly you need a hide I mean a good hide with a top on built from local material. You need to get rear access to this hide. It needs to be situated below a good tree which the birds will spend time looking from have a good scout around the ground your shooting over with a pair of binoculars they are easy to spot. Bird muck on the floor and lower branches always give it away. The most affective way to decoy is a dead rabbit gutted in place and lead belly up. Place it on the ground at 30yds in the morning don`t stay in the hide go and have a bit of breakfast. Return in the afternoon and wa

Break his ankles I had a BSA super star then my bro had the latest hw90k with gas ram then I would let him borrow my girlfriend so he would let me take out his rifle. Seriously camo gear and get some scrim to put over the rifle it makes a huge difference even if you do look like atwat. Simon

He may of only been a young dog but did more of what they where bred for than old Miss Jones fat old dog who occasionally used to get a pull on the post man or nextdoors cat. Simon

Well, in this present political climate this thread and the link will cause a lot of interest from people who are using and keep an eye on this site looking for ammunition to use against us. Lets commend our selves for responding in the correct manner and showing our disgust at a barbaric abuse of wildlife. Baiting is the unnatural end of the sport but many a good bloodline has come from such activity which used to be carried out in this country and I would imagine still does but, that is a reflection of society as a whole not the working dog world in general, there will always be a crimi

Ferreter or Electronically Aided Rabbit Digger?
porkypowell replied to a topic in Ferrets & Ferreting
So what happens when the ferret is stuck behind a couple of rabbits? Do you sit on the carrying box and await it's return,or get digging, get it back and move on?Which of the above slows you down more? If you dig ONLY when you need to you will actually speed things up. Nobody is advocating that we should be digging at the first oppertunity,if I don't have to dig when i'm out i'm well chuffed, but I know that if I have to I can. Perhaps we should all go back to feeding them bread and milk as they did many years ago We wouldn't want that, would we? Good thread ditch,it's got us a -
In my previous job I was maintance manager for a large nut house lots of easy money in pat testing. We would have 200+ items done in a day by a sub contractor a busy man Simon

Ferreter or Electronically Aided Rabbit Digger?
porkypowell replied to a topic in Ferrets & Ferreting
I would put a collar on a ferret for safety reasons. I hate digging and always used it as a last resort. I like to have a dog that marks silently not digging and snorting down the holes. Place nets as quietly and quickly as possible and live for the explosion from the hole. But still remain in covert ops mode as so many digs are a reults of the chaos that I saw on a video link on here the other day. I also hate digging to other ground game but thats more acceptable as some don`t bolt. A days ferreting needs to be fast paced not held up on a dig when you could be ferreting. Simo -
I think is a question of how deep a hole can you dig, but my irish friend the quarry who use this forum are well educated and might not dig themselvs a hole but best of luck with your hunt Simon

I had a 3/4 whippet 1/4 collie quality ferreting dog would struggle with to many runs on the lamp. I would guess 1/5 collie 1/5 bed 1/5 grey 2/5 whippet regarding size 21" at a guess should make a quick dog in the daytime. best of luck with your new apprentice I am jealous think about the summer you will have training and starting the dog Simon

Hi, I am thinking about building a kennel/run so I can get a pup and start back after my lay off. Before I start with pen and paper and design the ultimate building to run my obsession from I was just wondering what you lot look for or would be on your list. I am looking to house two-3 bitches lurcher, terrier, sprolly, two working jills plus all equipment. I will need the facilities to breed but it would only be a litter every four years or so for my own purposes not commercial. It must be of timber construction as I live in rented accommodation but are looking to stay for about 5 years, t
