I never feed my ferret meat they are vegetarians they chase the rabbits for fun not to harm them in any way. Do not starve your ferrets it might give them a eating disorder and even though counselling is available for ferrets its expensive but it might be your only hope if they are aggressive best of luck with your problem. Simon.

Tried for a couple of pics very difficult getting action pics camera is not suited so here are the best simon

Hopefully out Sunday morning I`ill take the camera and try for some pics. Its her first season ferreting we have been out 6 times so far she has had a 100% marking score. She is not so cover mad like a spaniel which is a shame but will smash through if close to a bunny. Obviously obedience is not a prob when ferreting with spaniel and collie blood. All in all I am quiet happy with the experiment as I bred her myself she also needs to double up as a family pet. But its early days yet and she has a long way to go. Simon

first session after 10year lay off
porkypowell replied to porkypowell's topic in Ferrets & Ferreting
I think the key is not to get to serious and take a back seat and watch the team all develop together That`s part of the reason they are all it their first season dog,. ferrets and kids. I just go with them to make sure they all stay safe The kids set there own nets decide what holes to try and what ferret goes in. The kids are just starting to make their own nets. Its great its like going back to school but knowing what you know now if you know what i mean. Hoping to get out on sunday morning. Simon -

I had to share my good news after a long lay off to help bring up a young family. My self and my children have put together a team consisting of a sprollie and two jill ferret we had our first session yesterday resulting in two bunnies. It was the first time for the dog ferrets and kids and after many practice session on dead holes setting nets and working with the ferrets it all went like clock work. Looking foreward to the coming season. Simon

Well the best bit of advice I can give never ever leave home. I never knew what happiness was until I got married and had kids its too ****ing late now. Stay at home give your mun ten pound a week keep. Then make the dogrun of your dreams and spend your days with your dogs and your night down the pup Simon

That is a good design and easy to build with the use of a standard garden shed. Might I be so bold as to make some suggestions? I would install a drain in the centre of the run section and if possible take it into the sewerage system of the house and while the trench is open install an armoured cable to run electricity and water if possible. You might not need it now but if you do its there. If you can `t access the sewerage system run the waste pipe to a soak away. A Local builder could advise on the finer details and do the labour yourself but get the professionals to the connection to the h

Hi, I am in the process of training and starting off a first cross sprocker x border collie 10 months. I have owned working dogs for the best part of 15 years lurchers, terriers, sprockers, and a beagle. Starting back at the sport after a lay off and fancied something different I bred her myself from my sprocker bitch and a stunning looking farm collie. I intend to train this dog to work with ferrets and a bit of rough shooting. Obedience training was a breeze and the bitch is very keen to please she has had a mixy rabbit and is bunny mad at the moment she will make an average dog with th

Hi, I have a sprocker bitch she is 16 now and retired to the couch in the office. The best ferreting dog I have had the pleasure of owning the mix keeps then level headed but keen. Stuning looking litter they are a credit to you Simon

Well, yes my dog is called airrifle I used to call it poppywoppydopops but some of the boys who used to hang around the blue parrot club started coming on to me. So I changed it to something more masculine I am not allowed a shotgun due to the little blue pills I have to take and the fact that sometimes I think I am Hitler's long lost brother. Simon

During a heavy down pour rats and rabbits will be on the move looking for dryer short term accomadation. Always worth a walk with the airrifle as woodies tend to sit a bit tighter. Simon

A man with a rifle can kill more foxes in the course of a season than a terrier in its working life. I suppose this is all a result of the hunting ban. Like all government polices they are made by people who don`t understand the subject they are dabbling with. It seems to me the countryside fox population is under serious threat and one day it might lead to them being protected just like the badger population and now we are over run with them. I think we can all see what will be happening in the future when the badger population starts to take over the urban paradise. At least the

smoker vs ferret vs spade ???
porkypowell replied to sambo123's topic in Earthdogs & Working Terriers
.. i beg to differ as a ratting ferret will live just aslong as a rabbiting ferret.. .. but the only thing differant to a rabbiting one is the ratting one's will nearlly allway's give up on the rat's once they have had a good bit of punishement.. But they alway's seem to make cracking rabbiting ferret's afterwards. Millet P.s edited to add ive done a lot of ratting over the years and to date ive never ever lost a ferret through rat bites. I canot say that I have had a ferret die as a result of a rat bite but They seem to be out of action a bit more due to swelling of the face an -
smoker vs ferret vs spade ???
porkypowell replied to sambo123's topic in Earthdogs & Working Terriers
My biggest concern would be the damage fumes can do to a dog as they seem to be a favourite method to commit suicide so they will do harm in large doses. The only downside with ferrets is you need to keep a couple more as the working life of a ratting ferret isn't as long as rabbiting ferret. Simon -
Hi, I fancy a deerhoudxgreyhound I need a dog which can work with ferrets and bushing with the occasional nights lamping for bunnies and fox (if I miss it with the shotgun). The fox ability should not be a problem with deerhound but are they quick enough in the day on bushed rabbit and have they enough intelligence to be trained to a high level of obedience. I am not looking to insult any deerhoundx owners. My previous dogs have been colliex`s so my first choice would be a 3/4 greyhound 1/4 collie. Other factors are putting pressure on my choice (boss & kids). And the deerhoundx`s win

Pic of the month well done and a proud dad as well. The future is safe in his hands my boy jack (11) is going to start this season when I start back up first job ferret keeper. Keep the kids coming foreward its our responibility to keep things alive as I feel its slowly dying. Had a look on the survey results on the main page and its looking thin on the ground with the younger sports men/women. Simon At least you will have some strong dogging boys as you take up the supervisory role. I hope this thread keeps getting bigger with pics of new blood it is good PR for the sport.
